Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Thread #4

Downloading the demo, been looking forward to this game.

A lot of people seem to forget that some games are meant to be be you know... GAMES. Not gritty, realistic, simulations.

And what is post-processing?
It's an option under graphics that most pc users will need to turn off for the game not to be a minimap simulator.

After I got it working, it was pretty fun, although it's typical EA to give us a time limit on the demo....45 minutes.

It's a graphics setting.

The demo was alright. The combat felt a little clunky (stuff like not being able to move right away after a roll, little delays) and the camera positioning was a little odd sometimes, but other than that it was fun.

Definitely closer to The Witcher/Dragon Age (only with a more colourful Fable'ish graphics style) than TES though. There isn't the deep level of interactivity with objects that you have in TES, it's mostly shiny containers to loot here and there. You can't jump except at specific points, and there are some invisible walls in the intro dungeon, so I expect dungeons to be fairly linear. To be fair it is the tutorial dungeon, so maybe others are more open.

I haven't done many finishing moves yet, but the first few were basically short quick time events where you have to spam a button for extra XP. I think it kills the creature either way.

Could be worse. It's 45 minutes after you get out of the initial dungeon, and the timer pauses during conversations/menus.

Is the demo any good?

I found it pretty impressive. The game is a definite day one purchase, considering I have the cash. Combat was handled very well. For a game I figured would boil down to mindless hack and slash, there is a fair amount of depth and tact at play.

Anyway, I recommend anyone interested in trying the demo. The game actually exceeded my expectations.

One thing I'll add about the demo, it's from an earlier build of the game so any bug/glitch type problems that you might see will probably be fixed in the final version. BHG did that so they could focus on debugging the main game.

i had a few land-stretching issues but as far as glitches went that was all. The combat was fairly fun, played stealth with the daggers. Its very fablish if that makes sense, i'll probably buy it when it comes out

I've had a few sound-related issues (people not talking when they should... subtitles just zipping by far too quickly) with the PS3 version and aside from those and some bearable and minute fluctuations in the fps when a lot of lighting/fire effects are being rendered, the game's running pretty well, for me. Admittedly, I haven't actually done much and probably won't tonight because I'm tired, but I did spend about 40 minutes gawking at some scenery and trying out the combat on some random townsfolk. :P

Anyway, I walked out into that beautiful forest and at that moment, I knew I would be buying this game. Consider me sold. I can't wait to get a nice, long rest and try at actually doing something now that I have a feel for it tomorrow, but wow, I like this game.

Definitely liked that demo. Combat was really fun, I like the way the story was going, and the progression system was awesome. I played the demo on PC, but used an xbox controller, and I think it suits this game well. It also looked great, and I can't wait to max it out when it does get released. Day one buy, for sure.

I tried the demo on PC and while I wouldn't say it's bad, the gameplay didn't win me over that much so I wouldn't classify it as great either. I'm also not very fond of the cartoony WoW look the game have.

I will probably get the game eventually, but a rather large price drop need to happen first.

I have to agree with Freddo here.

The demo didn't really impress, nor did it invoke disgust. The candyland aesthetics still hurt my eye, and the gameplay feels only a little less boring than what it looked like in videos, and all in all it felt like a mixup of Fable and Two Worlds, but there is still some yet undefined charm. The skillsystem looks rather interesting (maybe the gameplay changes towards better through a few more levelups) and the writing didn't feel as bad as I expected (though still your standard fantasy fare). It doesn't require Origin, but it does seem to require an EA account and internet connection.

Definitely not getting this on release, but perhaps, when Steam offers it at 50% or higher discount, I might just pick it up.

I just played the demo. Like others, I didn't love it or hate it. I didn't even use up my allotted time after exiting the opening dungeon. I'm not crazy about the over-the-top button-mashy combat (which reminded me of why I disliked Dragon Age II).

It also seems like a terribly derivative fantasy world, considering it is an entirely new IP.

I'll wait to get it cheap on Steam, or just give it a pass.

Super boring demo. I haven't pre-ordered this game or anything like that yet and the demo sure didn't convince me. The combat felt very weak, it looks similar to many WoW clones, and I just don't find the story all that interesting. I'll probably rent it from Redbox for a few days and see if it gets any better but I'm definitely not paying full price just yet.

I also didn't like the character creation system, Skyrim really thrashes Amalur in that department.

Plus it took me 4 tries to finish a 45-minute demo because it kept glitching out on me. At least Skyrim lasted for over 60 hours before starting to hang up on my first character.

Overall I'm less excited now than I was before playing the demo but I will give it another try once its first patch comes out to hopefully stabilize it. Oh joy.

Was interesting. Tried it on PC and PS3.... the graphics didn't seem that different (perhaps a bit more lag, and lower enemy view distances on PS3). Combat seemed more fluid on a controller, but the camera settings bugged the heck out of me (only had one invert option, not separate for each axis... yeah, my preferred console camera controls are odd )

Probably end up with it on PC - better performance, better loading, better camera controls. Plus, possibility of mods.

As for the art style.... I thought they were nice. Definitely a nice varietal change from all the grey / "real is brown" / realism that many games are doing these days. Of course, I like WoW's style, too. I know that people have different opinions, but I'm still somewhat surprised at this kind of stuff getting strong dislike. Ah, well... different people, different views. :D

As it is.... seems like a pretty good Action/RPG/Adventure. Combat might get a bit tedious, hard to tell without more abilities & time. But I'll probably end up getting it "later". Between FInal Fantasy XIII-2 coming the week before, and Mass Effect 3 a few weeks later, I'm going to be busy.

I'm a bit on the fence about it. Co-worker convinced me to pre-order it last night, but today after playing the demo I'm not sure if I want to get it day one. I REALLY like the magic system in this game though, and it reminds me a lot of the first Fable. I didn't finish all 45 minutes either.

I may cancel my pre-order and just pick it up when it goes on sale.

Also, the camera seems to be really wonky, too low and too close in combat.

I really enjoyed the demo, there seems to be some intersting lore and I like the art style. The combat wasn't spectacular but I never really expect good combat from an RPG.

It also bothers me that shields, even non-magical ones, just appear out of thin air. Same for bows and some other weapons.

The demo was alright. I don't really like when games disallow my character to jump. I feel so much more immersed when I am able to. I also wasn't thrilled that the character blanking stares at the screen during conversations and there wasn't much detail on any of the characters faces. I have a pre-order but might cancel it and buy when it goes on sale. I still have a lot more of Skyrim to play.

Will there be a demo for the xbox 360? I looked earlier but there didn't appear to be one.

The demo was alright. The combat felt a little clunky (stuff like not being able to move right away after a roll, little delays) and the camera positioning was a little odd sometimes, but other than that it was fun.

Aww dayumm, I hated Dragon Age (II was the one I played I think.) Didn't mind Fable too much though. I knew it wouldn't be as 'open' as TES, but I hoped for more than button mashing.
Thanks for the review though, it's helped me make up my mind whilst I wait for a demo to come to the 360 online thingumy. I'm not sure it'll be a day one purchase. I only dropped £40 on Skyrim because I knew it was exactly what I wanted. (Oblivion being my all time favourite game.) I'm not sure I could justify spending that much on a new game I wasn't quite sure about. I think I'll wait until it's about £20 or so.

Ugh...

Had such high expectations of this game, but I couldn't even bring myself to get out of the dungeon. Got a shield, then worse... a bow.

Ran out of arrows, and they regen'd...

Dodge mechanics of God of War...

QTE's

4 races

No jump

Graphics and general feel of the game feel like the PS2 guys from Legacy of Kain got together with the people from Fable, all under the engine of World of Warcraft. This game feels like a tremendous leap backwards, and although I'm sure people might like it...
Screw this game.

It can have a second chance when its super cheap, maybe... but probably not.
