I enjoyed playing a number of Argonians in Morrowind. They were unique and interesting (despite the pathetic walking animations), and I made one Hunter who used both bow and Spear to hunt game, slavers, and eventually Daedra. Another was primarily a Mage, and despite the bias against the reptilian race, he was able to rise to prominence within House Telvanni. In the former case, a mod took care of the footwear problem by introducing Beast Leggings, and most open-faced helmets were usable. In the latter case, a combination of Medium Armor beneath a robe, and Unarmored, fit the situation nicely.
I couldn't stay interested in my attempts at Argonians in Oblivion. The loss of most of what made them unique was just one more symptom of the general lack of meaning and sense of purpose in the game.
