Metal Thread #2

It depends. I think you can spend the same amount of time and effort trying to master "songwriting" or "composition" as you can at mastering an instrument,
True enough

Anyway, I think the skills of some of these shred masters could be used to great effect by a more dedicated composer,

Indeed.. I've heard some guitarists that can shred like mofos and still make interesting music.. Having both talents would make you unstoppable :bonk:

I suppose we disagree on how important being able to read is though.. In metal anyway. Look at Gorguts for example  I remember reading an interview with him an he seemed pretty anti-theory

I don't think reading is absolutely essential, but I think it can be incredibly helpful. Anyway, I guess I was talking about a composer in a more traditional sense, but that's obviously not the only type of person who could make good use of shred virtuosity, as there are those people you mentioned who aren't affected by that apparent dichotomy between composition and performance which is also paralleled in classical music as well by the scores (no pun intended) of composers known for their incredible keyboard chops; in his lifetime, for example, Bach was primarily known for his skills on the organ.

Regarding Luc Lemay, I have no doubt he can read, as he is actually a university-trained "classical" composer (which I guess is probably why you brought them up in this context?), and I have heard some of his works in that vein, but I have also seen his comments with regard to Gorguts that he does not approach the band's music with the same sort of process and goes for a much more intuitive approach. At this point he probably could hand out scores since I'm fairly certain the Dysrhythmia guys can read, at least Kevin, whom I talked with briefly about his Jazz training in his university days, and I suspect Colin can also read, as I remember reading about him doing crazy [censored] like transcribing Bartok pieces for Chapman stick or Warr guitar, but maybe he's just totally nuts and did it by ear.

edit: Btw, been anticipating the new one for a while now; I heard the clips and I'm ready to rock out

I stand corrected. I brought him up simply because he rules haha, I had no idea he was a trained classical composer. I have no doubt theory can help you, but I always thought it can also trap you in a way.. That might be a pretty ignorant opinion also though as I don't know any theory myself.. Far too lazy :(

New stuff does sound good!

http://www.myspace.com/luclemay7 Regarding theory, your argument is certainly not an uncommon one. My feelings on it are as such: studying theory will more than likely change your perspective on music which will subsequently change your style as a write. Some may consider this "selling out" (for lack of a better phrase), but I look at it as an expanding of one's palette; while theory can often acclimate your ear to certain sounds, it can also provide you a better basis for understanding other music whose elements you wish to incorporate. As far as being limited or trapped by theory, I think this is generally really only an argument when you are studying theory within a limited context; yes in certain types of pedagogy (species counterpoint, for example), or in the emulation or study of certain styles (common-practice Classical era, early Rock and Roll, etc), there are certain rules which need to be followed, but that's not to say that those rules apply outside of those contexts. Theory isn't just a set of rules; it helps to create frameworks to codify and understand existing material which often have to be expanded and revised in order to understand new concepts, but can also be used as a framework for creating new concepts themselves. It also doesn't mean that you have to approach everything from a 100% intellectual, pre-composed standpoint; as I said before, studying theory can expand your perspective and understanding, thereby leading you down new avenues even when working intuitively.

Anyway, this is in danger of straying really off-topic (or already has), so I'll leave it at that.

I realise I am a few weeks late but it took me some time to narrow my list of favourite albums down to 10 for 2011. Not that any of you are probably going to agree with me but let's see:

Not in order:

1) Evile - Five Serpent's Teeth,
2) Vektor - Outer Isolation,
3) Saxon - Call to Arms,
4) Primordial - Redemption at the Puritans Hand,
5) Artillery - My Blood,
6) Mastadon - The Hunter,
7) Nightwish - Imaginaerum
8) Leviathan - Beyond the Gates of Imagination Pt. I,
9) Destruction - Day of Reckoning
10) Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

My top 10 from 2011:

10) Fear of Infinity - While Heaven Wept
09) The Lay of Thrym - Tyr
08) Fallen - Burzum
07) Celestial Lineage - Wolves in the Throne Room
06) Essence of Nine - The Flight of Sleipnir
05) Guiltless - Indian
04) The Tunnels - Terra Tenebrosa
03) Spiritual Alchemy - Synkletos
02) Agape - Lantlos
01) Tales of Wanderings - Old Silver Key

Honestly... I didn't want want Old Silver Key to be Album of the Year. It's a hard feeling to describe. I just couldn't stop listening to that album, and it didn't feel like it belonged anywhere else. Honorable mentions go to the new albums from Turisas and Vintersorg for just not making the cut, as well as Apocrypha, a local metal band, who put out a new album after I compiled this list.

Oh dear, there was a new Vintersorg? Another one I missed. I still want to hear the latest Moonsorrow in its entirety as well as Kampfar, Tsjuder, Craft, Falloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, Throne of Katharsis, Heretoir, Blut Aus Nord and Peste Noire.
Many of the other last year's supposedly best releases have only been in my possession since last week. So it's probably a bit too early to make a sound judgement, but I'll give a provisional list of my favourites so far, since you're all making up your lists so eagerly.
Perhaps I should fit Enslaved's Thorn in somewhere... And Falkenbach's Tiurida didn't really leave such a deep impression without coming across as a bad release. If it happens to grow on me, I can see it end up near the bottom. Anyway, there are ten more releases I need to check out. That's half this list that could still be prone to change...

20. Svarttjern - Towards the Ultimate
19. Burzum - Fallen
18. Dead to This World - Sacrifice
17. The Konsortium - The Konsortium
16. Djevel - D?dssanger
15. Primordial - Redemption at the Puritan's Hand
14. Demonaz - March of the Norse
13. Fen - Epoch
12. Taake - Noregs Vaapen
11. Beherit - At the Devil's Studio 1990
10. Archgoat - Heavenly [censored] -> :pinch:
9. Yggdrasil - Irrbloss
8. 40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room
7. Helheim - Heieindómr ok mótgangr
6. Enslaved - The Sleeping Gods
5. Lantl?s - Agape
4. Altar of Plagues - Mammal

3. Sólstafir - Svartir Sandar

2. Old Silver Key - Tales of Wanderings

1. Woods of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason

So guess who has recently played Cobalt's, Eater of Birds and Immolation's, Majesty and Decay on his record player?

This guy. Vinyl is amazing. To make it more exciting, Cobalt has announced that Gin will have a vinyl release in the near future, I am also going to be purchasing Close To A World Below and Failures for Gods on vinyl from HHR as soon as I can.

I only bought five albums from 2011 that are even vaguely metal, so here's my short and sweet list.

1. Earth - Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I
Okay I lied, Earth aren't even vaguely a metal band these days...
2. Boris - Heavy Rocks
Boris are though, and this album was wicked. Also I got to see them, which pretty much the best thing in the universe.
3. Beat the Red Light - Salt the Lands
Skacore band from England with a lot of Slayer influence. Not really metal but more metal than any other ska band I've ever heard...
4. Jesu - Ascension
It was pretty and nice though to be honest not really all that much of a stand out album as Jesu goes but even so it was better than everything all you guys listed.
5. Mastodon - The Hunter
I haven't listened to it much and I didn't like all of what I heard, but at least one of the singles was good so I'm okay with that...

Oh and I do have The Sleeping Gods somewhere but that wasn't an album it was just a random collection of unrelated and not very good songs...

I just don't like much modern metal... I only have 13 metal albums from last year, and half of those were free downloads...

Seriously?
I think the title song is one of their best songs ever. They should have given it a Norwegian name though. Basically, they should make a full length with only Norwegian folk ballads or songs that resemble The Sleeping Gods, Sigmundskvadet, Suttungs Mj?d and Yggdrasil and it would be my most favoured release ever. And I hope they make Grutle use his clean vocals more often, because I could really listen to him for hours, while Herbrand bores me to death.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgoXUzIwXk0. I'm still waiting for someone with that talent to make some kind of black/death metal and classical hybrid. The thought makes me drool. :woot:

but even so it was better than everything all you guys listed.
lmao. I could never get into that band. I have Conqueror lying around but I've only given it one or two plays.

My favourites were Leviathan's and Craft's new ones. Also that Dolorvotre album I mentioned earlier I thought was really cool. I'm liking a lot of what I've checked out from these "black twilight circle" bands.. They may be about 15 years too late, but I like em. :)

I recently discovered these guys through someone else, so I guess I'll share them here. Pretty cool US doom metal, really repetitive but in a hypnotic sort of way.

I found out about them a while back from a random advert, or this thread, or something, I can't remember - anyway yeah they're pretty good, if occasionally repetitive... You know you can download their album for free?

Sounds like a heavier version of judas priest combined with the most heavy of iron maiden. (that overkill) I'll check out those other links in a minute or so when the overkill track ends.
