Metal Thread #2

Accept have a new album out this year in April, how the [censored] did I not know about that until now *adds another ablum to list* :hehe:

Very Iron Maidenish. (old maiden) I can understand why you don't like LoG if you like this kind of music. I like both.
I do love maiden and I do prefer metal with more "melody" (for lack of a better word) and clean vocals.

That said I do like some of the more gutteral stuff, I like a black band (a one man band) called http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XVATLAuYWU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4ih3JVrRPE for example and I like melodic death along the lines of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI-dBds21YU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edBYB1VCV0k

(described as progressive metal, but I'll post here in case someones got the interest in listening)
Dream Theater: As I Am: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muiNqF_XJJc
Dream Theater: Honor Thy Father: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlX6iJEnYSg
Dream Theater: (Killing) In The Name Of God: (14 mins) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wZJ5yymnZA
Could never really stomach these guys; they've got about the same ability to put material together as Opeth, and their material is much worse than Opeth's. If you're going down that particular route of prog metal, I've always much preferred http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YURj2x0do_M. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YURj2x0do_M is another decent band in that vein I've discovered recently. You may want to take my opinion on this stuff with a grain of salt, as this style of prog metal isn't really my thing anyway.

Speaking of which, lately I've been wanting to find more good progressive metal with a decent amount of melodic vocals (which are hopefully not just super boring two or three note melodies) that doesn't stray very far down the more power metal or Dream Theater end of the spectrum. Prog thrash seems to deliver the best goods in this regard, but it's a genre with pretty slim pickings.

Yeah, I'm already familiar with all of them unfortunately :( Watchtower and Coroner especially rate very high for me.

I'm also not a big prog metal fan, but I really like Anubis Gate. I discovered them through their self-titled album released last year, which quickly became one of my favourite 2011 releases. They've also got a top notch catalogue, since the early 00s.

Perhaps a little power metal-y for your tastes, but I'd encourage you to check them out. Here are some songs from their latest album:

Filosofem
Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Belus (it holds a repetitive atmosphere. Hypnotic riffs, cold vocals, dat bassline)

Those to me hold more of the definition of atmospheric. The early stuff was more raw and in your face, with dark ambient instrumentals scattered about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpgbwuSL9jk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bm-kdLwBVc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SBfkVkiLMY

and for [censored] and giggles, here's my favorite Burzum instrumental. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDK2ZAGDta0&feature=fvwrel

Noticed you said experimental as well. Well, jeez I'd just pick up every album save his 2 pure ambient works, if that's not your thing.

Det Som Engang Var is probably his most experimental.

Thanks man

Same.

I'm aware of how simple it is but I still think it's beautiful.

I did at one point some years back. I seem to remember them striking me as similar to Porcupine Tree, but less favorably, though perhaps I should re-examine that position, as it has been a while.

Been listening to a lot ofhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsaLxlBCVbk lately.

That intro is pretty weird, not too bad for some brutal death. I just found these guys on HHR, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqNlSGjtqPY. Really great death metal in my opinion.

And I am just going to leave my favorite solo here by Immolation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRK0Advijr0. To hear the solo, skip to the 2:00 minute mark!

Sounds a bit like old lamb of god (burn the priest, as the palaces burn, black label). I have a hard time deciding if I like this or not. It's just a little too "unclear", somehow.

Pretty good stuff actually. And Immolation's Harnessing Ruin is one of my favorite albums by them. Love the production on it.

It doesn't beat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbgIUv9kcTM though. It's just incredible.

You might like this song by dream theater, give it a try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO3D_-xQFog&feature=related At least the first minute shouldn't be too bad (but around 1:30 you might rage quit).

There's a new Altar of Oblivion song out, if anyone is interested. The song is from their upcoming EP that'll be coming out either this month or next month, followed by their sophmore album "Grand Gesture of Defiance", coming out later this year.

It's not just the production about Harnessing Ruin, but they really have the waning riffs that battle each other, with excellent drumming from Shalaty that brings it together.
Unholy Cult is another great album by them, incredible as you said. Especially the song you linked, I didn't know you knew that was my favorite off that album! I will be purchasing the CD version of that soon along with Shadows In The Light. Really love all of their work, just have to collect it all. :P
