Was just on my way here to create this thread because of my recent experiences. Over the holiday season I was lucky enough to be gifted with a nice amount of money( not to mention some leftovers from graduation thanks to keeping my first semester partying rather inexpensive). I upgraded my old GTX 270 and 4 GBs of RAM to a GTX 560 Ti and brough my RAM total up to 12GBs. I also purchased two developer packs of games from Steam, about 70 items for 125 bucks. I purchased the Focus Home Interactive bundle, this one was a risky bet but I mainly bought it because I had always wanted to try out Cities XL and was going to buy Divinity II per recommendation from a thread like this one. The other bundle was the 2K bundle, which included Borderlands and all its DLC, Mafia II and its DLC, Bioshock and Bioshock II, CivIV and DLC, CivV, and a couple others. Overall I got a nice mix of games and was happy with all of my big holiday purchases. I tried a few of the games and its safe to say their were a few stinkers( Sherlock Holmes uggh). However one game that truly blew me away......Mafia II
Mafia II, not only does it look fantastic it also runs very well. The PC port of the game was done to perfection and unlike Saints Row 2, LA Noire,GTA IV etc the game does not have a stuttering issue that many open world driving titles seem to have. The characters are great, the animations are fantastic, and overall the developers paid tremendous attention to detail that is lacking in todays games. Its a bit on the short side so I would not have paid 50-60 dollars for it but at its current price it is a steal.
Now in relation to the above game I have to say......
One of more overrated games would have to be Saints Row 3. So many websites placed it into the GOTY category and I really have no clue why. Sure the game is crazy, over the top fun and every mission feels like a scene from a Jason Statham movie but I feel that is also its downfall. The zany action becomes stagnant because of the way they overuse it. Most games follow a similar arch, start off fighting with sticks and stone move on to lasers and death rays. The reason games follow this? It works. Saints Row 3 lacks the sense of progression that a game like GTA San Andreas, Mafia II or even Saints Row 2 offered. Think of San Andreas, you start off with a wife beater, a pair of jeans, sneakers riding a bike through downtown LA guarded only with your fists. By the end of the game your could be flying a jetpack over the Las Vegas strip, being chased by hoverjets, wearing a 300 dollar suit, dress shoes and a pink afro, while wielding a M16 that you have used enough to have unlimited ammo. I will say that Saints Row is incredibly cinematic and customizable but at times its all to much and does not deserve the praise it is given.
Some other overrated games........
- LA Noire- boring, conceited, poorly done PC port
- Thief- Really do not enjoy this game
Underrated
- Metro 2033- One of the best FPS and it does so without having to include an online component
- STALKER- Under appreciated outside of certain groups
- Warhammer II - Probably my favorite action RTS hybrid. Great use of RPG elements to add playability to a genre that usually has stale campaigns.
