Most overrated and underrated games

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 9:55 pm

Overrated -

Any Call of Duty. Just never saw the appeal. The online play is horrendous, filled with squeaky children who are way too young to buy the game. Single player was boring and lifeless. Too many chavs and pikeys buy the game, only to then go on to refer to themselves as 'gamers'...

The Final Fantasy series. I loved FFVII, and believe it deserved all the praise it got. The games afterwards were all pretty good, but I don't think they deserved all the attention they were given.

Underrated -

Beyond Good and Evil. Pretty much a cult classic, but not nearly enough people bought it and played it...should have won so many award for it's storytelling and gameplay.

FFVII -- now there is an overrated game.

FFVIII is still my favourite.

Overrated....
Battlefield - Good but not as appealing as it's made out to be - I played this without HD content :yuck:
Call of Duty - Good games, but its just another generic FPS.
Halo - Good but still just CoD in the future
Skyrim - I really like it, but the hype was too much

Most FPS are overrated these were just the first 3 that came to mind.

Underrated....
Fallout New Vegas
Fallout 3
Most arcade games on my HDD (Raskulls, Peggle et al)
Minecraft
Final Fantasy XIII

Amoung my friends.

See, I didn't really like VIII, compared to VII I thought it was pretty drab.

Still, I guess that's what opinions are for

I hate FFVII's "rainbow warriors" schtick and its cartoony style. FFVIII was more mature and did some really interesting stuff with the story. But yep, it's all just opinion.

really? i was looking forward to playing it when it comes to consoles. damn im a little worried now. hope it doesnt get dumbed down too.
Yes. The combat is sorta like Gothic 3. Not as broken but very luckish. Take Batman:AA for example. You hit 1 guy and can counter another from behind. This allows the player to get combos which in turn allow for a death to be the players fault if they don't counter. Theres a defense mechanism to it.

In TW2 theres nothing like that. You attack one guy and you're getting hit by 2 others with no way of defending yourself.

You can roll around and I've tried to do that in and out of combat but he controls are very unresponsive at times. I will roll into combat and hold the block button and my guy will just stand there and get hit.......it's all very frustrating.

In short: theres no rhym or reason to combat like in a game that does combat well like the Batman games. They try with certain enemies needing to be taken down different ways, but it just doesn't work.

Also, if you're playing on a HDTV the text in ALL the game is sized that you need to be right up against the screen to read....it's ridiculous.

I haven't had too much to do with the menu system but I've heard a lot of ppl complain that it's like the first. Just one big cluster[censored]. PC gamers seem to think non-user friendly means deep.

How on Earth is Orange Box underrated?

I bet if I asked some "gamers" of today if they played the Orange Box, they would look at me wierd.

But still, it can be anyones perception I guess.

Were we playing the same game? Batman's combat is incredibly easy, but you have to use your brain in The Witcher 2; if you try and play it the same way as Batman of course you will have a hard time.

Batman was easy b/c even on normal, if you got hit, you didn't lose a lot of health. The combat is mechanically sound. Theres no reason you couldn't turn up the consequences for being hit and making the game more difficult. Theres also no reason why you couldn't make the enemies attack from behind more.

TW2 is not a thinking mans game.

Before I disect the combat and why it's just short of broken.....explain to me how you play in combat. I'm looking at mechanics.

Also, I'm not trying to play the game like Batman. Thats completely missing the point.

Well, perhaps if you asked them if they played Half Life, Portal, and Team Fortress instead, I doubt as many people would look at you weird, but rather with a look of embarrassment if they haven't, or a look of enthusiasm if they have.

Good point

On a side note, I wonder how many people that played Portal 2 first know where Portal came from

The Orange Box, the ultimate gaming deal: A game that goes free to play in a couple of years, another game that goes free a couple of times as well, and a FPS series with a cliff hanger ending that was never finished.

Ha, I remember seeing the news that TF2 went free, and people that bought it weeks, months before were so mad!

Well first of all, I never get into a position where enemies are behind me, which seems to be one of your main complaints. The blocking mechanic in TW2 uses your stamina points (that's why you got hit while blocking, your stamina was probably empty), so I usually just dodge roll instead of blocking to get into a good position, and then use whatever attack is effective in the situation.

I played it on hard difficulty and never had much of a problem.

Yes you do. There have been times when enemies have been on the side or behind you. It's just not possible for that not to happen.

Another reason that makes me think this is b/c I never said I'm getting hit while blocking. So you're conjuring things up to give the illusion that I'm playing the game wrong. Not necessarily on purpose.

If I'm attacking 3 guys and I attack one guy theres going to be one guy that gets to the side of me at the very least. If I'm facing North and the guy is on the SW end of me and I press the "A" key to attack him next, my guy will attack thin air instead of facing the guy on the SW end of me. With the way Garrett runs and how the mechanics of the combat are, it needs to work like this. If I was to press the the "S" and the "A" button to turn SW, Garrett doesn't turn his body...he like runs around or some [censored]. It's just odd...the targeting is off. If I roll into combat, strike once and try to roll out, the controls are so unresponsive that sometimes A) the second roll is delayed....or B ) the roll just doesn't happen.

The enemies with shield need to be blocked first to stagger then attacked. But if theres 2 other enemies and I'm trying to block that one guy, I get hit by one of the others from the side, b/c my block has to be directly facing the second guy. While the facing part sounds "realistic" or whatnot, it creates a problem. Theres no way of attacking the weaker guy with the shield and taking him down before the big guy. So instead of using common sense to take out easy opponents first, I have to run around like a [censored] dodging attacks trying to get them lined up > big guy then shield guy.

Thats not fun. I did that back in the SNES days and it wasn't fun then. If I could play the game and tell you these things as they were happening the explanation would be more clear.

"I will roll into combat and hold the block button and my guy will just stand there and get hit" seemed to imply that, sorry if I misunderstood.

Overrated - CoD, Mass Effect (1 and 2), Final Fantasy (used to be excellent but as of late, ehh)

Underrated - ARMA II, CounterStrike: Source (at least here in Australia, or maybe it is just my circle of friends?), Kingpin: Life of Crime.
