Never thought I would yearn for Oblivion

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 5:53 am

So here's my main problem with this game...

When Oblivion came out after Morrowind, they ditched a bunch of weapon types, skills, spell effects, faction choice (in the sense that in Oblivion, you could be everything & do everything on 1 toon) etc etc. I raged super hard for a long time. The stupid autoleveling system where you have bandits running around in armor & weapons worth 2000g - 3000g EACH was ridiculous beyond imagining.

When Skyrim was announced I actually thought that we would perhaps see a return to the glory days of Morrowind's style of atmosphere & gameplay...but after 3 days with the game so far, this is what I see:

Skills dropped EVEN more...1 handed/2 handed? Are you kidding me?
Spells - gone. Open Locks? Absorb Health? Feather? Water Walking? How does removing Water Walking from the game streamline the experience for the average player?
Spellcrafting - removed
Spells - Don't scale with player level
Leveling System - Broken beyond belief. I mean...the game tells me to unlock something...I do it...and I gain a level? I sell trash to a merchant and I gain 3 levels of Speechcraft...which levels me up? Which moron came up with this idea? I mean, why even have levels at all?

UI - Terrible. I mean even Oblivion's UI was better than this garbage that is forced on us

To be fair, the following things are done well:

1) Atmosphere/graphics
2) Voice Acting
3) ???

Does anyone know when the construction set will be made available to modders or if it already is? Because this game needs a new UI, overhauled magic, implementation of a spell crafting system and for the love of god, nerfs to enchantment/smithing to bring some semblance of sense & balance to the gameplay.

Well opinions are fun. I personally love the game. Also if you have the ability to mod because you are on pc then why complain in the first place? Play the game, make note of what you don't like, and fix it when the CS is released.

Nope. I can't say I will ever consider playing Oblivion again after having Skyrim, and I have to assume the only reason someone might would be out of nostalgia. Morrowind, on the other hand I will always love and play :D

But yeah, no flames from me. I do feel sorry for people who have enjoyed ES games and don't like Skyrim. Skyrim is still much, much, MUCH better than your points against it.

Only thing I have missed from Oblivion is the detailed Journal diary and that was only after I did the quest with Moira in it because I didn't know what the heck was going on during it.

Skyrim is better than Oblivion. This coming from a Morrowind fan. That said, yeah, they introduced a whole new set of problems and over-simplification with this one. Magic svcks because of the things you mentioned, and we don't even have spellcrafting to make up for that.

I will never support the opinion that this game is bad, its my favorite game in a long time, i do, however believe the magic system should be put back to its former glory with all the spells it used to have, i am a big fan of customization and i want my character to feel unique while playing the game. Needless to say, skyrim is an amazing game with great gameplay, just in need of a bit more customization of the skills is all(:

I didn't realise spellcrafting had gone, as well as some of the spells I used most in Oblivion, that's a shame.

In the first 20 minutes of playing I really had the compulsion to load Oblivion again, but now I'm over 10 hours in I'm enjoying it a lot more. There are a still a lot of little irritations (the UI being a big one, the lack of character model a major one, the seeming lack of torches a silly one), but there are so many wow moments, and so many improvements in some areas (I think the new way spells work is incredible for example).

I think a lot of us wanted or expected an Oblivion 2 (or in the case of some older posters, Morrowind 2), but what we've got is a totally new re-incarnation...which from what I gather is what Bethesda does best. I have no doubt this forum will attract a bunch of new forumites who love this game as their first Elder Scrolls game, as I did with Oblivion, my first Elder Scrolls game

So far I'm embracing the changes, playing on 360 so I can play the game in it's vanilla glory. I'll get the PC version if/when they do a GOTY edition and I can mod it to make it customised to me.

In the mean time I've leant out my copy of Oblivion (to get rid of temptation!) and introduce more people to the joy of Oblivion and the Elder Scrolls :D

Edit to be clearer: l know there are torches, I was referring to my lack of ability to find any anwhere ^_^

UI - Terrible. I mean even Oblivion's UI was better than this garbage that is forced on us because of all the kiddies playing this on Xbox/PS3

Xbox 360 was the lead platform...

Don't be so elitist. A lot more people will probably be playing this on consoles. And with console versions costing more, this is where a lot of the game's profits will be.

The rest of your post is just opinions. Which myself and a lot of people will disagree with.

When Morrowind came out it was flamed for having less skills than Daggerfall, and for being more streamlined.

So you're "glorious" Morrowind still went through this same process that you're flaming Skyrim for.

What, you want to return to that game? Why not Morrowind instead? I respect your opinion but I enjoy the way Skyrim operates. Good day to you!

I pray beth patches the game to make magic scale (I could live with that) or have spell making (greatest wish)

I hope they listen and maybe they will add a whole slew of utility spells in the first dlc.

Welcome to my club bro. Good news is that you can get GOTY Deluxe from steam for about 25 euro.
But levelling system and mainly UI is major factors in discouraging me from playing Skyrim.

I have several problems with the game but I love it anyway. I've found glitches and the UI isn't exactly intuitive but it does not matter to me. This is, hands down, the best RPG I've played in a very long time. The absolutely best thing about it though - it can get even better!

There's perks for different weapon and armor types. In fact, there's more customization in Skyrim than in any other TES game, but I digress.

As for magic, you need to understand something.
This is Skyrim. This is the TES game that is about manly men wielding axes and wearing horned helms. Sure, magic will be there, and it's fun, but pussies in gowns don't rule the world here. It's a sword and sorcery setting, and you need to be ready to get bloody.

It doesn't matter what the lead platform is, you optimize a gameplay experience for every platform you plan to release on. PC gamers got Bethesda started and are the only reason they've reached this point. So I don't think a month of optimization work is too much to ask for.

By the way, they had earlier promised that the PC would have its own UI, would have DirectX 11 support, and would have a construction set. Not a single one of these things was given to us on the day of release. That's on Bethesda for flat out lying to us. It's not on us for "being too picky."

I always hated that Oblivion had a spell for just about everything. Waterwalking? afraid to get your robe wet? Open lock? As a mage you have to rely on your companions/followers and their lockpicking skill.

I really like the levelling system, you are what you eat (sort to speak).

You missed my point. I wasn't saying the game shouldn't be the best on every platform - I was annoyed at the fact the OP claimed all console users were 'kiddy', when myself and the other 50 people on my Xbox friend list are on average 30 +.

Not everyone can afford / has space for a full gaming rig. And like I said, console gamers make up a much higher percentage of the games profits.

Streamlining =/= dumbing down. Not in all cases. I believe this is one of them.

Skills dropped EVEN more...1 handed/2 handed? Are you kidding me?

If you look into the skills, you will notice that the perk tree is aligned in such a way that the skills are actually 3 skills in 1, axe, sword, mace. Skillception!

Spells - gone. Open Locks? Absorb Health? Feather? Water Walking? How does removing Water Walking from the game streamline the experience for the average player?

It doesn't, I know this is taboo to say, but maybe everything isn't a result of streamlining for the average player? I mean the intelligent thing is to not presume a conclusion and than try to make things align with that conclusion, I actually think that's called revisionism.

It's probably because waterwalking doesn't serve any real purpose, since swimming is no problem, walking on water serves no useful purpose, since not being able to walk on water, does not pose any hindrance.
