POLL: Fast-travel: Taxi or Instant?

Post » Tue May 14, 2013 8:58 am

WoW was a great game. It had/has a lot to offer, and many systems would work well in many other games. The P2P, taxis, mounts, hearthstones, the list could go on for quite a while. While this game might have some similar features to WoW, it could hardly be called a "clone". RIFT and SWTOR are examples of near "clones". I don't understand why people feel the need to come here and blast WoW hate. Take it to the WoW forums; plenty of WoW hate over there, you'll fit right in.

Well please quit talking about Wow like it is the god of all games here just as irritating in the Skyrim Threads about people talking about Fallout 4. It just gets to me when anything or any feature of another game is mentioned. I hope that this stuff from these other MMOs don't get put into this game. And to tell people like me to stop where the Original Poster posted the WOW comment in the first place tell him to go to the WOW forums and discuss it there.

As OP I was going to defend myself, or rather correct you where I thought you were very wrong, thankfully the fellows after you did it for me.

Sadly I'll still do it myself; One feature from one game implemented in another does not make it a copy, I don't actually understand how you came up with the conclusion. The travel-system in WoW was great, varied and engaging. I don't much like it for a lot of things other than that and the open-world setting that the vanilla game had- but that doesn't mean it was [censored] all around.

I don't really care most of the time... but considering the immersion I get from TES games I would prefer Taxi... Maybe you can have a guy with a carriage at every way shrine too just to make it believable to travel between locations? Idk it seems like fast travel is one of those minor things that people would want but sketchy to implement.

(POINT 1)
Those who say that if it is an option to have fast travel in the game, nobody would use a taxi, is wrong. Some people, like myself, would use them. How do I know this?

There was a little game called Everquest. In EQ, there were three continents. There were docks where you would wait for a boat that would show up every 30 minutes to take you from one continent to the other. These boat rides took 15 minutes. While you were on these boats, you would sail by islands and ship wrecks, you could see sea monsters. You really felt like a world traveler. It was truly glorious to take these rides. Hell, you could even fish off the side of the boat.

However, there was also the option to get a port from one continent to another. Players would pay a small fee to get ported.

The thing is, even with this option, the boats were always full of players who like to take the boats. Even with the wait time at the docks. Even with the slow 15 minute boat ride to get across the ocean.

(POINT 2)
There is nothing wrong with fast travel. It does not matter if everyone else is fast traveling. This does not stop you from taking things slow and smelling the roses.

Some people do not have a lot of time to play. They just want to log on, find their friends, port over to them and start playing.

There might be a time where you might be asked to port to a party, let's say for a dungeon. So what? It will not kill you to port. Also, if you don't want to, don't port. Get to the dungeon or location you want to adventure around and then form a party there.

(POINT 3)
It does not matter if you like to port, hate to port or something completely different. Options are always a good thing.

Do not force someone to play your style. YOU play your style and let them play theirs. Everyone wins.

(POINT 4)
It should be cheaper, the slower you travel.

Walking is free. Hell, you could argue it makes you rich from all the stuff you will find along the way.

Taking a carriage should be cheap. Not only should it be fun, but realistically, how much is a taxi driver really going to charge a person?

Portals should be costly. Mages know they have you by the short and curlies. They know you want to be there yesterday and they will snake you for whatever they think a person would be willing to pay to be teleported.

The exception could be an item that let's you port for free once a day. You can port all ya want, as long as you can afford it, but first one is free.

******************************************
Anyway, that is my two ceptums.

Have a nice day.

Instant, taxi are just unnecessary time sinks. IF they had flying mounts and what not then I would agree with having a taxi system but ESO is not going to have flying mounts, which Is why it must be instant.

Just because your character is not gaining any virtual item or experience doesn't make it unnecessary. It's part of the experience.

Then again you might not like that part of the experience which I could understand, but it seemed like you posted your comment from an objective view.

Yet again; I see you don't like the experience. That doesn't make it unnecessary.

I am suprized how many people here would prefer taxis.

The only way to like taxis is if you have never played an MMORPG with taxis in it. Taxis are ok the first 10 or 20 times, but after that they get old and VERY boring really fast.
In single player games, taxis are ok because you dont use them as much - you just go through each area and follow the questline, you rarely need to go back or cross a long distance. MMORPGs are radically different, once you get to endgame you typically have to travel the world a lot. I can think of a bunch of MMORPGs were taxis were a terrible experience.

Personally I would rather play the game instead of waiting five minutes for a taxi to take me somewhere. Waiting is not fun.
The idea of taxis in a MMORPG is just obsurd.

so have you played a tes game before? there were many ways for instant transportation. for example, mark and recall spells and mages guild transport.
there also were divine intervention and almsivi intervention spells and even scrolls of them. many items were bound with those spells.

Morrowind's fast travel, not Skyrim or Oblivion's. They had a perfect balance between actually having to find your way around the world and convenience of traveling from major points. There's no reason what-so-ever to be able to travel to any location after you've already discovered it in a MMO.

We already know you can't insta travel to anywhere you want, just to wayshrines. It is nothing like Oblivion or Skyrim's where if you discovered a cave you can just port right back there later if you wanted too.

I wouldn't mind it being either taxi or instant. However, I am leaning more towards taxi. Like Morrowind!
