Check your power supply to your ps3. Make sure your ps3 is plugged in a wall socket and not an extension chord. Sounds silly but my buddy just changed this and his fps also improved. Maybe lack of power to the ps3? Who knows. Just throwing out every tip I can to help improve maybe just one persons skyrim experience.

I'm getting quite a bit of lag on my 120gb slim ps3. I had it plugged into a power board but it's still making no difference. I have no idea why i'm lagging and my friend is not. I'd really appreciate it if someone could suggest a few settings for my tv or my ps3 so I can stop this lag.

I have Skyrim for PS3 and at the start of a new game, it seems like it should still be in the workshop. As i was riding in the wagon, about every 3 seconds there were moment lags and one time the sound completely cut out for 5 seconds straight. As i get into the game the problems become less noticeable and pretty far and wide. But some are still there like framerate problems, and lag when trying to open the player menu. As i press square to open the menu with the 4 directional arrows, it does not react immediately and sometimes i have to hold down the directional button to get that option to light up at all. That and other little constantly appearing delays are very annoying.

My PS3 is pretty new too, and there is no way it's running low on memory or anything from it's 320 gb hard drive.

Try these things if you have not already. The all capital letter words in parentheses is the setting. Follow step by step. Settings can be found in the XMB menu second from the left. This is the main menu before you start playing your game. I appologize if I have made this more complicated then it needs to be. Anything that has (HDMI) by the setting should be adjusted accordingly. Meaning if you are not using an HDMI cable to connect your playstation to your tv choose (OFF) or the most simple option. If you are connected using an HDMI Cable follow these select what I have. I am running this game very smoothly right now. Good luck and I hope I made even a slight difference in someones gameplay.

-Settings-Game Settings-PS Upscaler (OFF) PS Smoothing (OFF)
-Settings-Video Settings-BD/DVD Upscaler (OFF) BD/DVD Video Output Format (Y Pb/Cb /Pr/Cr) 1080p 24 Hz Output (OFF) BD/DVD Dynamic Range Control (OFF)
-Settings-System Settings-Display [What's New] (OFF) Notification Messages (DO NOT DISPLAY)
-Settings-Display Settings-Cross Color Reduction Filter (OFF) RGB Full Range (Limited) Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (OFF) Deep Color Output (OFF)

For me, Skyrim has noticeable framerate drops in cities and large rooms. You don't want to know what it's like when a dragon appears =/

What kind of tv are you playing on? Standard? or HD?
What kind of cables are you using to connect?

I'm using a 1080p full hd tv, using a hdmi cable. Is it worth having that other connecter cable plugged in too? or do I just need the hdmi cable.

I am using an hdmi cable only on a 720p tv. Try changing your playstation resolution to 720p if you can stand it. Found in the settings. Let me know how that goes

It works slightly better, but in the huge town Markarth, it just has a bit quite a lot of fps lag. Most of the time it's fine, but it just lags in big cities

thanks heaps for helping =) I haven't used my ps3 in a while so it might be dusty (It had alot of dust on it when I put the game in) The game is still certainly playable and I too hope my issues will be fixed in the future. Thanks again.

O, my god

Skyrim lag's like a bad rotting corps. From time till time it is down right unplayable.
When i attack with magic the game freezes for a few seconds. I have died a few times because of the terrible lag.
I mean every attack i make it freezes.

And it freezes when i walk in the world, does not mather were.

I almost killed my controller for it...

Why Bethesda, why did you spoil this game for me.
It is so frustrating. It spoils the game you worked on for so long.
It spoils one of the greates games ever made..

I have a PS3 slim 160 GB less than a year old

Right, i did a full system restore. And i mean the whole nine yards.
A 9,5 hour format..

And it does run a bit better.
But there are still freezes and i still die becouse my controlls wont respont because of the frezzes.

Frustrating.

I'm playing on "old, big" PS3 .. 40 gig was it ?

I encounter some lag when my ps3 has been running for a while (+5 hours), especially in big cities. I've hardly encountered any bugs so far (fingers crossed) and i allready played 35-40 hours.

So all in all, I hardly have problems playing this game on a old ps3. (if i can drag myself away from playing this game and let my ps3 cool down)

You see Bethesda, now people are laughing in you face because people can not take the PS3 release serious.

Personally i cry..

It is either that, or go ballistic out of frustration because of the freezes that make me die.
i can not do that or i will throw my controller at my tv

Damn you Bethesda!

Since last posting, the game has randomly and completely frozen a couple times. And it wasnt even when i was doing anything that tasking for it. One time all i was doing was starting to use the forge, and it froze when i pressed x to actually use it. I hope the patch comes soon.

Just to update you all.

Ive ran the game on both an old 3 yr 80gb model, that has been used pretty much daily for its total life time, and a 250gb 1 yr model.

No difference what so ever.

The only issues between the two that would effect performance, aside from improper cooling, is the amount of space available on the HDD for VRAM.

I posted in another thread a full explanation, but even if you have spare space on your HDD, the PS3 will only allocate you a certain % of the free HDD space as Vram, it wont use all the spare space. As such its better to make as much Free HDD available as possible.

I find that if i'm sprinting an awful lot there appears to be fps drop and occasional loading lag... Particularly outside Whiterun... Not a problem though, I'm impressed :)
