Shouts Are So Boring Because...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:36 pm

The only problem i have with shouts is the combat specific ones lack of overall power(then again it maybe because i usually on expert or master) and the variability of Fus Dos Rah.(Blasting some one against a wall does no damage but blowing a full health bandit chief of a foot tall ramp instant kills wtf)

Shouts are a completely new game mechanic. Some of them mirror existing spells, but on a more powerful scale. Others add completely new elements, like slow time. They add a new level of strategy as they do not cost magicka, yet have a cooldown. Finding the right balance for when to use a shout and magic or physical attack has been a fun and engaging experience in the game for me.

We got a COMPLETELY new game mechanic and people are complaining that they're 'boring'.

This forum depresses me.

My biggest issue with the shout system is the implementation "pause game, find shout I want, select it", return to action and press shout button for required length of time.

Solution?
Mine & Deadly Azuril's Shouter!
Voice controlled and activated.
You shout Fus Ro, Fus Ro gets shouted in-game!
You shout Yol Toor Shul, your enemies are bathed in fire!

On the fly, auto-switching,auto-casting, uses game timers so no immersion is broken! Even has a Thuumic Word Dragon Scroll to print.
Beautiful GUI, settings, Youtube Tutorial videos, and many user-submitted vids for your shouting entertainment
(currently only supports vista & 7, but adding xp as it becomes ready)

Well, you just press a button and there is no learning at all, you just find them. The Greybeards quest is so dull even a 5 year old can do it.

Why not have special key combination to do shouts or joypad combinations? It would make shouts a bit more special as they are supposed to be but one button press makes them effectively glorified spells. You press a button to cast a spell, you press a button to fight, you press a button to shout, were is the skill in that? Console users are used to pulling off combo combinations with games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter games(been around since the 80's I know) but it seems Bethesda just lost all of their braincells and thought us gamers did as well.

Anyone can perform a shout, just press that button, ooooh look you're gifted.

Play SF4 and stop posting... someone from bethesda might take you seriously.

They're a great idea on paper for these reasons. With long cooldowns compared to how long battles last, and exceedingly long ones for the good shouts that shut down your ability to use lesser ones, the implementation is lacking.

I usually just play on normal and the combat-related shouts do seem very underpowered; they do practically no damage to bosses.

I can see that point to a certain degree- with single mobs and low level groups like wolves a single shout can seem almost worthless. And once you reach the 'soft' level cap area, almost every enemy is pretty easy to defeat.

However I would also pose that again, this is a new mechanic and I don't think Bethesda really understood how fast people were going to level in this game- people were level 50 in the first month of release. Whether that is because game mechanics are broken and levelling is too easy, or the devs honestly thought people would spend more time exploring, hanging about town, etc...I don't know. But I think now that they have some ideas of how people are using the game, they will implement things in patches or in the expansion to more fully flesh out the shouts and other combat mechanics.

Eh, given past games, I'd be surprised. Maybe in TES6. They'll probably leave it to the modding community.

"Hey Skeever butt"

it took me 5 minutes to realize what shout I had just gotten on 11/14/11, it took me 2 minutes to laugh and 30 seconds to realize how much I hated getting my rear kicked by a Dragon and a Dragon priest for a easter egg shout, gg Bethesda, successfully trolled me.

that is almost as stupid as the thu'umic thing (speaking shouts into a mic to use a dragonshout)...almost...in fact, lets just go with this idea to save bethesda from making a bigger mistake.

honestly how would we even get a combo with the way the game works? it is not possible (well, it is not practical, at least)

Heh yeah. If they don't manage to weave them (or something very similiar) into the next TES everyone will be complaining about how awseome shouts were and how a great feature has been cut.

They should have made you mash your keyboard every time you use them to make them feel worthwhile.

I think the cooldown periods are kinda necessary. A balance had to be struck with making them usuable without being able to shout your way through battles and making magic skills a bit redundant. They've helped me in lots of tricky situations.

You can say that about spells & power attacks, too.

Oh, god, no. :yuck:

Only console users who actually played arcade/fighter games. I've played console games for decades. I've not played "combo" action games. I'm not used to that stuff at all.

edit: oh, no wonder. It's another Half64 thread.
