Shouts Are So Boring Because...

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 7:46 am

That's actually more of an arcade thing.

I haven't played a console game in years with the "3 life" thing. That's like Pac-Man or something. lol. What are you talking about exactly?

Super mario bros : Skyrim 3D adventure.

Keep the console gameplay for console game =(. We already get crappy interface since oblivion because on console.

Or yeah, pacman: Skyrim edition, you have to eat the sweetrole while avoinding Dragon.

Have you played Fallout 3? The amount of people I've decapitated with Jingwei's sword...

Whoops sorry, haven't played fallout 3 in years, but still it's not "Copy and pasted" because there's an animation for it and fallout 3 was mostly focused around guns, so just because something was in one game they can't put it another without it being copied?

I don't know if I should participate in the conversation. I don't think it's that "consolefied". And what little there is, I welcome.

On a sidenote, I'm an oldish gamer. I've been playing PC games since the early 90s (and Amiga before that). But also like consoles, and been playing just as long. Both schools of thought could learn from each other. In fact, that basically the state of gaming now. There's not that much difference between them anymore. And I like it. 2011 alone has some of the best games in a long while. I'm not very nostalgic of the past.

Oh, I'm not arguing it was... I'm just saying you could decapitate people in Fallout 3.

Really?

This isn't Mortal Kombat, I'll take one button over a combo any day.

Skyrim copies the critical hit system from Fallout3 but without V.A.T.S. The slow motion scenes are exactly the same except Fallout 3 has guns. Skyrim, zero innovation and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is going to kick it's [censored].

I love shouts in Skyrim, while i do think the recharge on a few are too long, over all i like them alot. To me there is nothing more fun in the game then to Fus-Ro-Dah!! some one off a cliff or Tower.

while I do love combos, I don't think they'd fit in skyrim, they work better with turn based games, when you've got 6 bandits pummeling you, you don't want a combo popping up (sort of have this problem already with the kill animations). I do think the shouts need changing though, at the very least an upgrade to make them moderately useful, and to remove redundancies with spells.

I'm more disappointed that they did not make shouting against dragons more complex. Supposedly it is meant to be a verbal debate and such, but it doesn't really feel that way. I was kind of hoping for the ability to cancel, and counter shouts with other shouts, or have some crazy, rapid back and forth shout battles with dragons.

I had rather wanted half those shouts available as spell tomes and the other half truly as a dragon shout. This would make the current arsenal of spells less boring and dull, and make dragon shouts look more serious.

That's the point of being dragonborn. Would you like to spend years of in game time meditating?

I'd like a shorter cooldown and the ability to use Storm Call without the worry of friendly fire; otherwise, the problem is with you, my friend, not the game.

I'd still rather have a innovative way of using them rather than the same way as a spell or scroll because they make the shouts rather redundant and I quite frequently forget they are there.

I think they're boring, becuse the majority of them aren't practical or useful.
Every single one of them is useful, you may find one that isn't useful to your specific character. E.g the throw voice shout won't be much use to a non sneak warrior. But every shout is good to a certain character.

Clear Skies
Unrelenting force
Become Ethereal
Marked for Death
Ice Form
Dragonrend

Off the top of my head those are the only shouts that have any real value.
  • Slow time?! One of the best shouts going, slows time massively down for your enemy and only slightly for you.
  • Elemental fury, can make you an absolute powerhouse.
  • Fire and ice breath can both be powerful, hugely powerful at low levels.
  • Storm call, how can you say that doesn't have 'real value', it can clear an entire group of attackers.
  • Call of valor and call dragon, both incredibly powerful shouts.
  • Animal allegiance works at a huge range, bringing every animal (even mammoths) to come and help you.
Those are on the top of my head, on top of the ones you mentioned. All shouts are useful in a certain way.

Shouts are boring because they're basically just magic repackaged and hyped up.

If you want combos and stuff like that, maybe you should go find a good action game to play instead of an RPG.

Combos irritate me, it's why I don't play games like Dead or Alive Y, Y, Right + Y, B ,Right + Y, B, X, Up, Down + Y :bonk: *left hook performed* WTF

I tell you no game mechanic has made me throw a controller before, but button combinations :swear:

Throw voice can be duplicated simply by firing an arrow.
Slows me down as well as the enemy.
Does not work with enchanted weapons of any kind.
Key word, low level.
300s of me not being able to use a different shout. It also attacks allies and enemies indiscriminately.
I deal more damage than either the spirits or the dragon.
I don't need a bunch of random animals cluttering the area even worse than a companion.

Well, you just press a button and there is no learning at all, you just find them. The Greybeards quest is so dull even a 5 year old can do it.

Why not have special key combination to do shouts or joypad combinations? It would make shouts a bit more special as they are supposed to be but one button press makes them effectively glorified spells. You press a button to cast a spell, you press a button to fight, you press a button to shout, were is the skill in that? Console users are used to pulling off combo combinations with games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter games(been around since the 80's I know) but it seems Bethesda just lost all of their braincells and thought us gamers did as well.

Anyone can perform a shout, just press that button, ooooh look you're gifted.

you are playing the wrong game

Throw voice has a recharge time of 5 with the strongest version, it can be used over distances. It's much easier to use than an arrow, what if you don't carry a bow?

The slow time shout slows the enemy down much more than you, you obviously haven't used it.

If you don't think elemental fury can be powerful, then you clearly haven't used it.

The breath shouts are still usable at high levels, elemental weaknesses.

I assume you can't see any tactics rather than 'run and hit them', I think this isn't the right game for you. Maybe try the shouts out before commenting.

I was getting totally pawned by a mob of mages and then thought I'd give the slow time shout a go because I had never tried it before. Now I'm hooked on that shout, its so useful when you are outnumbered.

Roleplay.

I have a Dunmeri character, and I roleplay that she cannot innately learn the Voice through absorbing a dragon soul. So, I simply put a load of skulls and soul gems around her, cast Guardian Circle, wait an hour, and then unlock the shout. Then practice it a little while, before using it in combat. Some of the bigger shouts require a sacrifice at the altar of Boethiah.

There's already at least one mod that makes shouts interesting. ThuuMic. It makes the shouts voice controlled. You've to truly learn the shouts.

That is a rather accusational assumption. If they work for you that's fine. I simply find most of them sub-optimal or not worth using when weighed against the reuse.
