Is Skyrims price fair ?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 5:28 am

$100?

In the UK on Amazon it's £27 (~$40 USD?)

Which works out at like 0.0009 GBP per minute of entertainment. Much better value than a chocolate bar or rental movie and infinitely less fattening ;)

Frankly, I bought it on Steam, and no, sixty U.S.D for a digital copy with no manual, no map, no box, nothing but the game, is piss poor.
But I know it isn't Steam's fault, I know they had to sign a contract forcing them to sell it for that price while physical retailers got to cut it down somewhat.
Why? Because physical game retailers are a dying industry and they're throwing every bit of power remaining in their decrepit hands at staying alive just a little bit longer.

Just like everyone 'needs' their iPads and iPhones and cool boots and sweet rides, fans and lovers will find a way to pay the price for what they love and need.

The peeps at Bethesda (including my lover Todd) are decent peeps who live for the love of the game and wish to uplift us all. They know we would pay dearly, but grace us with their benevolence regardless, because they are higher beings.

I would say it is worth $100, unlike Call of Duty which should probably be $30 or something. But $60 seems to be about the normal price for new games and as popular as Skyrim is I'm sure they will make more by selling it for $60 than $100 since more people are willing to pay 60 than 100.

I mean I guess for those gamers with $2000 gaming laptops and stuff like that it would be no big deal, but most gamers just can't afford that. ;p

TES: Skyrim will be well worth my £30, more so considering modding. Modding increases the lifespan of the game pretty much indefinitely. Morrowind and Oblivion have given me 100's of hours worth of content - so I really can't complain.
Call of Duty: MW3 on the other-hand has a terrible price, but that's just greedy Activision at work again. I would also buy this if the price was £30 or less - but I would still say that TES games give you more for your money. (Fallout, too)

Fair? ofc its fair, i buy all my games on Steam and that 49.99Euro is pretty much what all the other games i bought costs. imo Skyrim could have been even higher and i would still pay for it, saying that before even playing it, well yeah, i know what Bethesda they can do and i know what i get for buying their products.

Id say being less fattening is debatable. I mean if you sink all 300 hours of gametime into it in a couple weeks only stopping to eat and sleep, id guess you get a wee bit overweight...

Yes, I believe $60 for a TES game is fair and reasonable. As they provide countless hours of content and gameplay. Now, $60 for all the 6-10 hour games? Hell no, I'll wait till they are on sale for $15-25.

Price is fine. Not only do TES games typically have the longest amount of hours for an exclusively single player game, But $60 is the norm for feature games now. Get use to it.

The price was fair at the online store where I preordered. About 38,5 euro, whereas steam charges 50 euro. The latter is not so fair imo.

Well, in an ideal world, Skyrim would sell a lot more copies than "Crap 2012", and would make a lot more money at the same price point. Computer software, to some extent, is really a game of volume, not high price. It's about selling millions of copies (you hope, as developer) of a product whose per-unit cost is almost zero, at a high enough price that when multiplied by those millions of units sold, adds up to some real money and makes the endeavor worthwhile. Unfortunately, Crap XXXX seem to often sell more copies than anything else. *sigh*

Anyhow, as for me - I'm cheap, so I usually don't buy games at release - I'll wait 6 months, a year, sometimes 2 years, buy the GOTY/Ultimate edition with all the DLC for like $20. But, I've decided that Elder Scrolls games have been such a great value for me, that I wanted to buy the game at the "premium" price of $60 ( I mean, I *never* buy games at $60, so for me, this really is premium pricing) at release, not because I just couldn't wait, but because I wanted to "tip" Bethesda for making great games that I've enjoyed at bargain prices in the past. I'll *probably* also buy some/all of the DLC, so in the end the game probably *will* cost me $90 or $100 all told.

So, Bethesda, if anyone from the Co. reads this - Thank you, and you're welcome.

The pricing is fair, I mean the Collector's Edition over here costs $150 and those were sold out pretty quickly, so I think Bethesda has gotten a lot of money from this game. Standard PC copies go for about $50, been like that for a long time and probably will stay that way.

Steam on the other hand, is way overpriced when it comes to new games. <_>

Perhaps some future iteration of TES will have increased prices, when the franchise is better known.
I think Beth is happy having the best value and by proxy making all other games undervalued. They are still selling 100k+ copies of MW, OB and FO3 every year. How many other developers can say that their 3-10 year old games are still selling well.

I've had 5 years and over 2000 hours of (mostly great fun) with Oblivion, If Skyrim comes anywhere close to this then on a price paid/enjoyment had ratio, it is worth considerably more than what they are charging for it.

Subjective question though

Don't worry OP the price of games are going to continue to climb, so eventually you'll get to pay $100 dollar for a TES game. I don't know why you're willing to pay that much just for one game right now, even if it's packed with as much content as TES games have, because to me that's insane. Game prices are already insane enough as it is, if anything game prices need to drop to about 40 bucks per game, but that won't happen anytime soon.

Now I loved the elderscrolls series since the time I started playing oblivion and checked out the game before that, morrowind.Aand No one can disagree on this; Thay're crazy big games. So then we compare this game to my chosen example, Call of duty. who releaser a new (IMO horrible) game every year. that new game gets little to no added content except for campaign and storyline added opposed to the previous game, and now I go out from PC prising here. THey charge more for their game than skyrim !? that is jsut mad not only because the price for call of duty is redicoulusly high, but also because Skyrims price is rediscoulusly low. Now I don't know if you agree with me here, but with everything that exists in skyrim, and with all the dept in the game, I see it as justifiable by bethesda to charge around 100 $ for a regular copy of theur game. Just sharing my opinion. Sorry for any grammatical errors

I disagree with you Sir, Bethesda has undoubtedly did is research and has found also without a doubt that the price that they are asking is not only fair but in direct relation to the economic situation of the average consumer. What does this mean in lamemans terms, it means that if Bethesda or any other development company tries to sell games any game at the prise you recommended, they would lose a large percentage of their consumers who would not spend so high a price simply because they would not be able to afford it. Bethesda knows that in fact there are some people that would gladly accept it if they did indeed ask for such an unreasonable amount and in doing so would put themselves in dept or financial hard ship throughout the following month or months depending on how much money they make, Bethesda would not do such a thing to its loyal fans of this I am sure.
