The future of console gaming.

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 7:04 am

I have already said that if they new sell console games the way they sell PC games. Then the consoles will thrive, heck I will even ditch PC gaming myself. But if they keep the current console pricing structure its not going to work. People are not going to be willing to take a chance on a $20 game they same way they would a $5 game. And when your talking about a new release $60~$70 game (new console game price are roumored to be $70) people are defentally not going to take chances and only stick with the games they know they like.

Greg

I do not play PC because of its sales that steam offers or similar networks. I play PC because its more capable and have better quality games period; if you bought a PC for other reasons PC gaming is not for you to begin with. But again your giving more reason believe that MS and Sony would implement a digital distribution network into their platforms they do not want PC gaming to grow they want too kill it because they don't get money from it at least not a constant income as they get from consoles. Even some developers/publishers would be fine with PC gaming market dying including Activision they do not give damn PC and getting of the loudest player base that constantly "voices" their opinions about their games and how horrid they are. Still even if such does happen PC gaming will not die hasn't yet and never will because PCs are flexible they can outperform anything MS Sony Nintendo etc can release because if they try to keep up with current tech it would drive them into bankruptcy.

I want console players to have sales that I have or similar and what gamestop and Game and similar retailers with very shady business practices to disappear because they do not help the industry at all again supporting them is like supporting piracy. Trading games or at least trading in to get new games is still possible even on a digital level capsule has pulled it off I am sure MS, Sony, Steam, EA, etc can if the feature is wanted enough. New releases will always be new releases the price will stay at whatever the standard is set so yes costing $50-60 possibly $70 will always happen no matter the game on release day. But throughout time that price can drop especially when it digital no shipping required and unlimited copies and everyone gets a piece of the pie when that transaction occurs and years of evidence that sales match if not increase income from having it at it's "standard" price.

I game on PC because PC has better frame rate and graphics then consoles, I also like to mod. You can trust me on this when the PS4 and 720 drop they will be on par or dang close to PC graphics and run 1080p @60fps. And it probbaly will stay that way for 2+ years. If I can get away from doing PC upgrades every year for a few years, then ya I will ditch PC gaming until there is another huge gap between PC and Console gaming.

Greg

P.S. I bought my PC last year and I paid $500+ at the first of this year to have it upgraded. And I will be paying another $500+ to have it upgraded again next year. I love PC gaming but if you want to stay on top its costly.

Overall I agree with you in this post. But upgrading a PC is not needed as you said it is if you want top-top of the line graphics fidelity and gaming but considering the next gen Xbox and PS will be at least $500 on launch it is a good bet your better off sticking with a PC and upgrading what you need to match the console if you do not already going by your signature you won't need to upgrade based on speculation I have made I doubt next gen will have a equlivant GPU then 580 of course the speculation depends they are released such includes that whatever hardware is within the next gen has to be at least 10 months -1year+ old and prices of that tech at that time apply.

Being below superior for a time is not bad especially when you get the same if not better quality then a console can but your PC has more functionality still it is possible to play genres without issues that are built for PCs such as MMORPG's and RTS primary but others such as Arma III or Planetside 2 are also viable reasons and PC games last longer that is fact due to various reasons like modding but as well as developers/publishers are not focusing on you buying a new game every year because you do not want too more competition is available on PC it is a more open platform if your game provides a longer and more replayibility then a competitors game in your genre better chance your game will be on top.

But more back on topic I still believe and always have prior to these recent rumors PS4 and even prior too the WIi U announcement of origin being integrated on it that Digital Distribution will reach consoles some time it will help industry it will have side effects however such as no used games or not as many but it will still completely help more then it hurts and throughout this discussion more and more do I think Sony and MS won't jump head first into it making each and every game fully intergated into X service because the world cannot simply accept such now but having the option to do so most likely will exist eventually drawing people into the whole idea of buying digitally and prove that it can uphold on a console and MS/Sony/Nintendo game publishers and developers hope that it will be as successful as it is on PC today thus creating a for sure after release revenue source. But in 10 years Digital all the way possible completely still could be wrong could be right but by then I would imagine that the world's infrastructure as a whole would be good enough to support such.

I like to run games at max graphics and BF3 is really pushing my PC. Although I am running 1080p @60fps on High now if the BF series makes another leap in graphics they same way they did from BF:BC2 to BF3. Then forsure I am going to need a upgrade.

I also read on a PC gaming website that some of the games coming out next year are going to recomend a 2GB video card. Which I can see it, because BF3 is already maxing out my 560TI.

Greg

P.S. you are right I could run my PC for 2+ years with out needing a upgrade. I just wouldnt be able to do max graphics.

Side Note: I am all for ending the used game market if developers are going to put out quailty games. If they keep releasing these crappy games your going to see a lot of developers go under once the used games are gone.

Been playing games since Atari to the current gen consoles, hearing about the next gen makes me want to throw in the towel about even buying games anymore. I'm probably getting too old for it anyway.

If no one buys used games because they are unplayable, then the retail companies go out of business, when the retail companies go out of business the games/consoles/accessories can't be sold, and the only people to blame are the paranoid fools bathing in liquid gold.

- I don't really care for this, I'm not getting the new xbox or PS, I'll take this as an indication to move to PC gaming or just give up completely and focus on better things. Heck I have over 100 games around half are pre-owned and I wouldn't be able to port them, might as well stay with this gen, since the next can't promise any real upgrades that surpass this gen.

The problem is graphics have hit a brick wall. In order to get really good graphics that blow this gen graphics out of the water. Every PC and Console would have to be running at least a GTX680. Not everyone can afford a GTX680 and MS and Sony for sure are not going to be putting one in their next gen consoles. We need to wait at least 2 plus years for PC tech to catch up before we start seeing outstanding graphics in gaming. (I.E. when budget cards are as fast as the GTX680)

It's not about graphics.
Skyrim looks great, they just have to fix the ladscape and properly make it without holes.
Modern Warfare 3 looks amazing for a simplistic FPS
Crysis 2 which is years old than the previously mentioned titles has to be the best looking game there is and that is, like I said older than the others.
The game consoles aren't the problem, the design teams are just too lazy to use what they have and the companies are to cheap to fork out for a good engine.
But again it should be about pretty graphics, it should be about gameplay and story, hell there's only like 160x160 pixels in PacMan and that has one of the best gameplay/stories ever.
As soon as these consoles come out, people will be begging for a new gen after 6 months, dirty trend.

You say that, but come the day some computer hacker takes out his failed physical existence on a companys server and wipes all it's information, you'd change your tune. I prefer physical media because it's a physical copy on hand without relying on third parties such as steam or a hard drive to ensure the information contained works. Also, what's so bad about used gaming? If it weren't for used gaming, I would never have found half of the games that I know and love. Unlike derptards, I don't buy games because they look like 'l33t 5h00t3r br0', if a friend has a game that looks appealing, I ask about it, do research, and then shop around for a bargain price. I'd much rather go through 'long lines' than deal with the reliance on a hackable machine holding my information.

Again, your reliance on other services to maintain a product you owns data is laughable.

I'm not a paranoid parrot in this case, but prevention of problems is helpful. Your hard drive corrupts and the data is unsalvagable, you conveniently have the info on a floppy disk to use. (Yes I know not many people use FDs in this age, but that's not the point. I find the over reliance on digital information over a hard source to be bizzare and causing complacency amongst people. So assured that their precious Apple/Steam/Whatever is infallible.

I'm probably alone in my cautious attitude around here, but I feel it's a very sound and understandable caution.

And what if your house burns down burning all your books, games, pictures, etc.? It's just as likely as all the data on servers being lost / destroyed. If it happens? Bad luck, move on. I'm not going to live in fear and stay in the stone age. Physical is dead to me.

Whats more likely to happen;
A computer company gets hacked and loses all their data - your games.
or
You burn your entire house down and damage all the discs.
Considering the first ones already happened countless time - not to the extent that all data has been wiped - I'd say it's more risky moving to all digital media. It's like giving your money to a gambler, you don't know when it'll just disappear, whereas if it's physical and you have it, you know exactly where it is and when it's being accessed/used.

How is it more risky? It's (it being complete data loss) never happened to a major company yet, but how many houses burned down last year? Therefore physical possessions are more susceptible to loss than digital. And that's just fire, add to that hurricanes, earthquakes, theft. Also there's decay. What might last longer, some disc with data or digital data?

What happens to all of your digital content once the provider goes out of business or ends that particular service? How about when your account gets hacked (rather than the company's server) or banned? I have physical copies of games released 30 years ago that still work flawlessly. I don't believe for a second that the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live will be around in 30 years offering me access to my content. Once they cease to exist, so too do "my" games, videos, etc.

I also have no control whatsoever in such a situation, where as much of what poses a threat to physical media can often be mitigated or avoided entirely.

As far as I'm aware the only houses burnt down last year were those in the London riots, and those were mostly shops...Damnit :brokencomputer:
yeah different climates/landscapes/cultures are starting to show :P We don't get earthquakes/hurricanes here and actual burglarlies are really low, especially if said robber was looking for games only.
What if I pour water on the servers that hold all your gaming info, and you pour water on my disc, who is at a loss?

I would much more rely on my hard copy disk than to rely on the financial state of a company that im paying to play their games on, with my saves on a cloud and the game on their server, and if were making examples of houses burning down and floods how many companies went broke during the financial crisis which isnt even settled, and chances that companies might close down sections to mitigate loses, can you see sony closing its electronics section, to save its gaming section.

Plus i hate relying on the internet to provide me with a consistent service, your reliant on isp's, telco's, also the fact that an undersea cable was cut disconnecting 3 countries completely from the rest of the world, the good old days of having a disk run in your drive running your game, was alot simpler, advances in technology are great but sometimes simpler was actually better. Having played an MMO for 4 years, i can happily say i hate playing anything connected to the internet, that i wish to play for extended hours.

So what? Who cares if digital is better at some things... It will still cause huge amount of problems...

The #1 problem it may cause is putting GameStop out of business. If they sell all of their games, new and past, as digital copies online then people wont go to GameStop anymore, and over time, it'll go out of business... That means less jobs and then we are going to have people complaining about jobs. Think about other people for once...Do you actually want to support something only for yourself even though it hurts other?

For me this isn't so bad. Of the last two dozen games I have purchased, only one of them was used and that was because I was trying to maximize a GameStop gift card. On the flip side, I can't recall any time I've ever sold a game back to a store, so I wouldn't be missing out there, either.

Except in very few, rare instances, I always buy my (console and PC, physical and virtual) games either brand new or when they drop in price and I keep them forever whether they svck or not. I am also always connected to the internet, so I don't worry much about that either.

I have no problem buying new games, and if I didn't even have to go to the store to pick up a physical copy that would be even better (I dearly love being able to buy games online).

If this did bother me? Well... if this is the way the companies choose to go, nothing will stop them. I would have to accept it, adapt, and move on.

So with your logic, America should've adapted to the British laws instead of doing that war? African Americans should've adapted to being slaves instead of getting freed? And the list goes on...

You gotta remember, the companies only have power if we, the buyers, submit to what they are doing. If we stand up against this sort of thing then we may actually win and this sort of thing will be removed and replaced with something else. Yeah, this'll prolong the release of the 720 and PS4 but I rather do that then submit to something that is against one of our human rights. NO ONE has the right to tell me what I can or can't do with a game that I bought. When I buy a game, I expect to play it offline with no special accounts, no codes, none of that useless and pathetic stuff.

In Australia there is a call from the retail sector to tax all online purchases, as their are so many online purchases its affecting the retail sector, which means they lose money which means people lose jobs, so with precedents like this, it would only give more reason to tax all online purchases.

In the last few years when companies do things that really upset their customers, if the customers unite and complain in some form the companies have been known to change there policies. Netflix, the banks wanting to charge extra for checking, these are just two recent examples. Sadly I dont think anyone’s going to take seriously any matters with the word game in it. Now if every one just didn’t buy the new consoles and the companies had a record flop in sales, I would imagine they would change things back.
