The Skyrim Dead Is Dead Thread VII

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 7:18 pm

Here’s an update from the Bulsakh.

Back in Shor’s Stone, sweet Sylgja came through with a hot meal and some loving comfort. It may have helped that Erik talked D out of giving the chaurus eggs to Sylgja as a present. (Erik: Hey, I wonder what chaurus hatchlings look like. D: *SPLAT*)

The Bulsakh has been looking for a place to live that would be safer for Sylgja. Riften is no good, a dragon attacked inside the walls. He went to Darkwater Crossing to see about moving her back home, but there was a dragon lair right across the volcanic tundra. He dealt with it, of course. Then his father-in-law just wanted to complain about his wife, so D left right afterward. Shor’s Stone is as good as it gets for now. At least there she could take shelter in the mine.

Presently Big D is helping Mjoll the Lioness clean up Riften. She talks a lot. Once he helps her become Thane (we’re taking some liberties with what the game says), he’ll probably go back and get Erik. That kid has a good arm and a real sense of wonder. Plus interpreting one of his comments (the one you mentioned, lorelai) keeps things interesting with the road patrols. Buying potions means that D is perpetually broke, so a push for coin might make him go underground more.

The biggest thing I’ve learned from D so far is to remember those once a day powers. D’s Berserker Rage has saved him many times. I’d say pretty much every day.

It's done! I retired Malik. At Breezehome, where he can enjoy fine spirits, entertain the ladies (with beautiful songs, what were you thinking? ), and protect the people of the market from Nazeem.

***

I also started a new character...ehh...I admit, mainly because I'm trying to sort out a bug with a clean save, so she's not fully developed. And I still have to decide on what spell mod to take. She'll go Conjuration/Necromancy mostly and a bit of Destruction for support of her pets. Maybe she'll even turn into a vampire...who knows...

She's not exactly fleshed out yet, except for the name - Etheldred Gwaedlyd - , race : Altmer.
I have to think a purpose for her, what are her goals and aspirations etc. This might take some time because I'm kinda OCD about this bug I'm having.

Right, fairly long update, gonna bash on some spoilers as the Civil War has ground into gear...

Spoiler
After surprising Galmar and Ulfric by slaying the Ice Wraith and being instrumental in retrieving the Jagged Crown, Caendil and Lydia were tasked with delivering an ultimatum to Jarl Balgruf. The journey to Whiterun was a long and silent one, as neither Lydia nor Caendil felt particularly comfortable with the possibility of ending up on the opposite side of the Jarl who had been so good to both of them. And it turned out that their trepidation was well founded, as Balgruf returned the Axe, and began to bolster his defence. Thankfully, he kept his temper in check and didn't shoot the messengers, so they headed back to Windhelm with heavy hearts.

Ulfric took the news calmly, and sent them back to fight on the front line. "I wish you'd just buy a bloody horse" muttered Lydia, as they tramped all the way back. Arriving in time to see the opening exchanges of catapult fire, they hurried to where Galmar was psyching up the Stormcloak troops. "Sorry Balgruf, but its for the best. The Aldmeri Dominion is the future, and Skyrim being seperate from the Empire will help that glorious day to come sooner" thought Caendil, but kept this thought to herself. As the call to charge was sounded, a mighty roar erupted from the assembled stormcloaks, and Caendil and Lydia made sure that they spearheaded the charge. They cut through the windhelm guards and imperial reinforcements like a scythe through wheat, swiftly overwhelming those at the gate and making their way inside. They carried on through the burning city towards Dragonsreach; "Hey, I can see our house from here" Caendil grunted as they battled past Breezehome, thankfully unmolested from the incessant pounding by the catapults. Eventually they reached the great doors and made their way inside, brushing past the Jarls last line of defence. Bravely, Irileth and Balgruf stepped forwards in a last ditch attempt to save some honour, but were no match for Caendil and Lydia, with or without the greater numbers of stormcloaks now flooding into the palace. Finally, the Jarl yielded, and the fighting ceased - he was duly replaced by Vignar, and after congratulations Caendil was dispatched back to Windhelm to deliver the good news.

Ulfric seemed torn; he obviously hadn't wanted to fight Balgruf and was saddened to see his fall from grace. However, he maintained his composure and gave orders to head out to Falkreath. Caendil and Lydia made their way there via Riften, almost falling foul of an enraged Giant and having to flee headlong as he chased after them. "Look, I know it was funny seeing how high he could bat those Orcs from the stronghold, but I told you we were getting too close grumbled Lydia. Eventually, they arrived at the Stormcloak encampment, and received their orders from the tireless Galmar, to free some captive stormcloaks being held in Fort Neugrad, and take the fort. LInking up with Ralof, they were informed of the hidden cave beneath the fort. Unfortunately, Lydia tripped over a tree branch as they were skirting the fort, and her outburst of swearing got them spotted, forcing them to fight their way in. Once again, the imperials were no match for the duo, and the prisoners were treated to the sight of their captors being ruthlessly cut to ribbons, before they cleared out the rest of the guards and killed the surprised fort commander as he lept out of bed, unaware that he was the last survivor of the garrison. Falkreath was duly taken, and once again the good news delivered to Windhelm - The Reach was to be the next target.

As they headed west, Lydia spotted a cave entrance with some burial urns left outside. She wandered over and flipped the lid off one. Look, Gold!!" she cried, before rushing in. Groaning inwardly, Caendil followed her inside. She found Lydia standing next to the skeleton of an unfortunate explorer, who had been dragging a treasure chest on a cart out of the cave, "I knew it, I just knew it!" said Lydia as Caendil prised the lid off "I bet theres more where that came from too". Caendil finally gave into temptation and agreed that maybe, just maybe, this might be worth breaking off to do. The weather outside was horrendous in any case, surely a icy cave couldn't be any worse. And so it was that they battled a couple of ice wraiths before finding themselves at the entrance to a crypt. "This one was well hidden" mused Caendil "Could be hiding something good. Heck, lets do this" and so they prised the door open and down they went. There were quite a few draugr, but they were easily dispatched, and the duo were rewarded with a lot of gold and gems, gold, silver and iron ingots to boot. Caendil easily skirted around the ancient traps, but Lydia clumped over all of them, and was rewarded by flames to the backside and a log to the face; "We'll get your teeth put back in and your nose set when we stop off at whiterun" Caendil promised after the latter, trying not to laugh as Lydia hauled herself to her feet, dazed and indignant. They eventually arrived at a chamber, with a coffin in the middle and draugr lining the walls. "I dont like the look of this" Lydia murmered, and sure enough the lid flew off the coffin and the previously inanimate draugr lurched to life.

Caendil immediately launched herself at the draugr emerging from the coffin, hacking away, but in return was mobbed by the other draugr, obviously the guards of this long dead lord. They fell easily enough, and as the last of them uttered its last malevolent rasp, Caendil once more turned her attention to the lord, who was being desperately fended off by Lydia. Caendil steamed into the back of it, a whirling dervish of sword and shield, and the lord, unable to take the furious Bosmer and Nord simultaneously, finally fell. As Caendil took in their surroundings, she was drawn to some carvings at the back of the room. One in particular seemed to glow, and etched itself into her mind. Shaking her head, she backed away, joined Lydia in picking clean the room of its treasures, and headed back to the surface. "Happy now?" she asked Lydia as they emerged blinking into the daylight "I will be once I've seen a healer. I'm too young to be toothless" grumbled Lydia as the pair made their way towards Whiterun...

Yep, that saved a bit of space too. Was able to put in a bit more detail as I'm not posting from my iphone for once

Darien Threkk - my Nord Vampire, is dead.

But that's okay, he'll wake up again tonight.

On the return trip from a battle with a particularly tough group of Forsworn Agents, Darien decided to take a rest in a cave on the way back to Whiterun. Little did he know that a predator stalked the halls, and soon enough he was confronted with a jumpstart Vampire. Darien defeated it, but managed to get infected in the process. Never having seen a Vampire before, he was in for a complete surprise 3 days later.

He is a master of the Axe and Shield technique, as well as a decent Smith, Enchanter, and Illusionist. He fights for a cause of light, though he dwells in darkness.

Darien Threkk
Nord Vampire Companion

I am tempted to start one of these. Would probably get me playing to survive

It can be intense. Seriously. Especially when you start getting attached to your character (if you're the type of person that does). I haven't had this much of an adrenaline rush while playing a video game since I was...like...8. And I just started yesterday.

Another update to the Adventures of Idriel. Just went ahead and put the whole thing in spoiler tags to save space, though there are only some minor spoilers within:
Spoiler

Continuing north, Idriel finally arrived at Deepwood Redoubt, where the Ghost at Old Hroldan Inn had sent her to fetch a sword. Lazy ghost, using the living as his go-fors.... After some intense fighting with Forsworn—she learned that their hedge mages aren't that tough, but boy, those Briarhearts sure are!—she found the sword, gave it to the ghost, then decided to head back to Riverwood by way of Falkreath.

She didn't stay long in Falkreath, instead spending most of the night up in the mountains, putting in some quality girl-time with Angi while they honed their archery skills. The hours flew as fast as the arrows, and it was morning before long. Time to hit the road once more.

Whilst on her way to Riverwood, she spied three figures scuffling in the distance. Unsure of the situation, she crept in for a better look, only to discover Talsgar the Wanderer—that crazy traveling bard—kicking the snot out of an Orc and Khajiit bandit. She rushed in to help, but both bandits were dead before she could even draw her weapon. Music may soothe the savage beast, but the musician will lay them out cold.

At last, Riverwood! After sorting out a mess with a love triangle and assisting a fellow Bomser in making his competitor look like a fool, Idriel decided to kick back in the Sleeping Giant for a while a listen to some tunes. She also learned of a bounty out on a bandit leader east of Whiterun. That didn't sound like a trip from which she would return if she went in all by herself, no matter how gung-ho she thought she was. Say, that Bosmer, Faendal, owes her a favor. Why not take him along for support?

"But I have to stay here and woo my soon-to-be bride!" Faendal cried. After all that work, he wasn't about to just pick up and leave her!
But Idriel mearly shook her head. "You are aware that Bosmer NPCs can't marry in this game, right?'
"Ah, bummer. Well, screw it then. I'll come with you."

Once on the road, she quickly realized that bringing Faendal along was a good idea. Mages and Skeevers and wolves...oh my! Not to mention a [somewhat derpy] flame atronach, and an old Orc seeking a hot fudge sundae good death. But, with Faendal's help, the bandits were slain and Whiterun saved. For now....
Now it's time to kick back in the Bannered Mare. They'll pick up their shiny, clinky gold reward in the morning.

It wasn't until my S4 - 24/7 Vamp, di I even use Daily Powers. I have never played and Orc, but I see that being quite useful.

Happy house hunting.

Ah, Nazeem. The character that everyone loves to hate. :gun:

Good luck with the new character.

So, you have a high level character that is a vampire? I am just trying to see the connection here. Remember, I get confused easily.

Fair enough.

Gundlar the Nord was in the process of escaping from an Imperial execution, when a Stormcloak soldier caved his head in with a battle axe.

I don't think I will try DiD again for a while.

Cedric
Breton
Level 20

Died when a cowardly Thalmor elf stabbed him in the back. He managed to loose an arrow to create a distraction at the Embassy and tried to sneak in while they were all trying to find what made the noise, one Thalmor elf guard saw him and put a sword in his back before he could react. In a face to face fight, the elf would have had a good fight. Elves really have no honour.

Well, Idriel had an exciting run-in with a sabre cat the other day at the most inopportune of times. She and Faendal stopped at the bank of a river for a quick bath. She made Faendal wait behind a rock a few yards away so he wouldn’t peek, then proceeded to remove her armor and lay them by the side of the river. After only a few splashes in the cool, running water, a vicious sabre cat leaped out of nowhere and tried to make a meal out of the poor little Wood Elf! Wearing naught but her skivvies (which is most decidedly NOT proper sabre cat hunting attire), Idriel bounded out of the water and ran up the hill to where Faendal waited patiently. Lucky for her that he was there, otherwise she would have had to try to escape and leave all of her gear by the river.

With the cheeky sabre cat slain, it was then that Idriel realized she still lacked a significant amount of clothing. How embarrassing…. At least Faendal, the gentle-elf that he is, managed to keep his mouth shut on the matter. Though he hasn’t looked at her the same since.

Duralekh gro-Bulsakh has been through some changes.

The last cave full of spiders was the straw that broke the mammoth’s back. Big D had no trouble with them, but his fears gave every desiccated corpse Sylgja’s face. He went straight back to Riften and bought Honeyside without asking her. He figured it’s close enough to Shor’s Stone that she can visit her friends when she wants. Plus the only other house he could afford is in Ysolda’s neighborhood. He would really like to not have Sylgja meet Ysolda. It’s not that he’s hiding something, but there are some things he’s definitely not mentioning.

So he went back home to convince his wife she should move into a house that’s next to a fishery. “All right,” she said. “I’ll get everything ready and meet you there.” Well, that was easy. D walked her down the road to the new place. She loves it. He can tell because she’s been 100% with the fresh meals and hot Comfort. Also she opened up a shop. Hopefully she’ll buy his Sleeping Tree Sap. Then he won’t have an excuse to go visit Ysolda.

In other news, Mjoll went home and now D is traveling with his drinking buddy Roggi Knot-Beard. Roggi loves mead and Big D is an ale man, so the two of them can drink a place dry without any arguing. I’m not sure how Roggi measures up as a warrior. D had a very tough fight with a vampire in a nearly pitch-black cave. About all I could see through D’s Berserker Rage was red spells and D’s health bar vanishing. No idea what Roggi was doing during the battle, but somehow D didn’t kill him in the dark.

The other close call was D’s first blood dragon on a mountain path with a side of frost troll. At one point he was blinded by the dragon’s frost while the troll was thumping him. He got through that with 5 potions left, three of them only minor healing. He had already Raged once that day. That fight was also absent Roggi.

Now they are headed west to solve some sword puzzle. It was Roggi’s idea. Big D thinks it must be some Nord vs. Reachman thing. Whatever. He’s in it for the fight.

Alright, meet Lyvianna.

She is a young (for an elf) Bosmer archer. She is very skilled with the bow and prefers to dress in a robes and dresses.

I will only perk up archery and a part of sneak so I get silence, silent roll and light foot. These will be about all the skills I wil actually perk.

Since I RP both of my characters heavily (and run blog/journals for each of them now), I have always played them as DiD.

I've been extremely lucky many times so far... but my original character that I broke into the Elder Scrolls series with, Nocturne, for some reason lately I've had the worst feeling that his luck is about to run out... so I've had him resting at Honeyside for a bit now. :D

But it will be a sad day indeed when Nocturne finally dies. I'm very attached to both of my Avatars.

It's odd. I usually end up getting attached to all of my characters the more I play them, so I didn't spend a whole lot of time creating my DiD character because I didn't want to get attached to her. Figured she would die within the first few hours. Now that she's lasted a while, I don't want her to go! Guess that will just give me a stronger will to survive.

It might sound strange, but silly little encounters like that are exactly why I even bother "bathing" my character and doing other realistic activities. It turned a normal fight with a sabre cat into a rather embarrassing situation for poor Idri.

It's been a million years since I've posted on this thread. Stopped playing skyrim for awhile but I thought I would give it a shot again (hopefully i won't get bored so quickly this time). This thread still rocks my socks and I check it often, even when I'm not playing, so thanks everyone. Anyway, new char:

Abishai Betzalel
Male Breton
Class: Not entirely sure yet, I installed some spell mods so I'm going to lean towards the magic side, but I'm thinking he will be something like a spellblade. Time will tell I suppose, definitely going light armour at the start though.

I'm playing on expert and am going to try to avoid using potions in battle. I think it started taking the immersion out of it for me when I would just down a few of them when I was about to die. Abishai could be considered on the evil side of things, mostly though he is just selfish (I haven't done DB or Thieves Guild yet but I'm dissapointed with the sneak mechanics/gameplay and can't find a decent overhaul so I'm not sure he will be the sneaky type).

Also, this is my first time playing with mighty dragons so we will see how quickly he gets roasted.

Hey getzy I remember you and...

Here Lies

Jediael Betzalel

Born - 17 of Last Seed, 4E 201

Died - 16th of Heartfire, 4E 201

Male Nord

Level 19

Died from: Fighting 4 ice wolves, 2 blood dragon and 3 Falmer in succession.

I am glad to see you back. I wish you well, with your new character. I really like that Mighty Dragon mod. You actually run for your life at lower levels. That's the way it should be,

Again, welcome back and good luck.

Hello MKOX. I would be happy to answer your questions, but I must admit...I don't fully understand what it is exactly, you are asking.

There was one time I knew death was upon us and we had nothing else to do or anywhere else to go. My character was out of health, magicka and potions. She had just summoned a Dremora Lord to help out in a long battle against a Blood Dragon. She got caught in the open and the Dragon turned to her. I said goodbye as she turned to face the Dragon. We would die with honor.

The dragon raised his head to take a breath and kept going back. He fell dead in front of us. The next sound you herd was the Dremora Lord sheath his Greatsword and "There can be no other end"....

That was just sheer luck. If any of my characters were facing absolute death, then...yes...without question, we would go down fighting.

I hope that was at least close, to answering your question.

EDIT :
It's odd. I usually end up getting attached to all of my characters the more I play them, so I didn't spend a whole lot of time creating my DiD character because I didn't want to get attached to her. When I first started playing this "ironman" DID playstyle, back in the FONV threads. It was advised to do it with an off-the-wall kind of character. One that you wouldn't normally play. One that was not like a main character for a hard playthrough. That way we wouldn't get too attached to them. Well....just the opposited happened. I grew closer to these kooky chars than I had ever done before. It wasn't until then that I really started roleplaying.

A side effect that I welcomed and thus causes an even greater experience. That was when I suggested to Gunny, the OP of the FONV thread, to start a memorial. If not for that tight bond...I don't know.

Was utterly inspired when I first read about Dead is Dead. Had already decided to turn off the HUD, health bars etc as well as making sure I eat, drink & sleep at least once every 24hrs to make it a more immersive experience. I will also give myself 15mins to find shelter if a blizzard closes in (30mins if Nord) . Adding DiD just adds a whole new level of immersion. A whole new level of tension, anxiety, grief and angst too I might add....

So say hello to Snotblatt Turdhurler an orcish malcontent. Zero magic - all heavy armour & big f&$k-off axes.

Currently lost (am illiterate so can't read maps) as have just emerged from beneath Helgen & promptly disappeared into the woods, utterly ignoring the plaintive cries of Ralof imploring him to ..."join the Stormcloaks. Wait! Was it something I said?"

Will see what we will see

Elezabyth barely escaped the ruins of Saarthal with her life last night. Her survival skills came in handy--not to mention her excellent "back-peddling while casting" maneuver. Level 3 now and making her way back to the College.

Yep, knowing that it could end any time changes a lot. For me it makes it easier to know when I am driving something rather than the character. For example, when D spends 20 minutes getting Sylgja’s bug jar to stand up (finally, yaaaay!!), that’s not for my benefit. When he dies, I won’t see that bug jar again. That’s Big D in the moment doing something sweet for his lady. I’m sure there’s a badass combat anology somewhere, but someone else is going to have to find it.

The Bulsakh and Roggi are headed west into the Reach. Their departure from Riften was somewhat delayed by a fire-breathing blood dragon. It attacked inside the city while D and Roggi were passing the market area on their way to the gate. It was late afternoon, so pretty much the whole town was outside. Big D has new respect for his neighbors, although he wants to have a strategy session with Balimund before another dragon attacks. That guy has a whole store full of weapons and armor, and he went after the dragon with a dagger. That was more than some folks had, though. It was hard to tell, but it seemed that Brand-Shei was armed only with strong language.

Shockingly, no one died. Maybe because there were so many targets, the dragon didn’t focus too much on any one person. Also D didn’t see Roggi during this fight either. It crossed his mind that the Nord might have ducked into the meadery for one last pint before Sovngarde. He did manage to get at least one of his arrows into the dragon, so D didn’t ask him any questions. When it was over, Duralekh sold the spoils and walked two blocks home to Sylgja. She was completely calm and happy see him back so soon. She must have really been involved with her projects downstairs and completely missed the attack. D and Roggi left for real the next morning. Sylgja announced that while they are gone she’s going to plant a garden. She always wanted one at Shor’s Stone, but the deer kept eating it.

On the road to Ivarstead, D was attacked by another Dark Brotherhood assassin. That made him think. He recently heard a rumor that might help him find them. He would sure like to know who wants him dead. He also made a discovery that I cannot believe I have been missing all of this time. (Not quest related.) They came upon a military encampment while they were cutting through the woods. Big D is an amiable orc, so he wandered over and struck up a conversation. The quartermaster was happy to trade with him. Holy crow, the world is full of merchants that I didn’t even know about!!

A technical note, the Bulsakh has reached level 22 at 45 hours of pure enjoyment.
