The worst PC gaming interface award goes to ... SKYRIM!

While the UI is less than ideal, I have had no problems with it. However I think it may be related to FOV. Perhaps for those folks who have a hard time pointing to what they want, an adjustment in the INI for the FOV could make it better.

I am guessing on this as FOV issues caused some problems on some UI's when it is set sub-optimally in past games. Desi has a thread in the PC Hardware section that details how to fix this in the INI. However, you can make adjustments in the console for testing before you mess around with the INI file.

FOV adjustment
Have found no way to change FOV outside the game so far (only the fov n console command like Oblivion). Changing the FOV via the in-game console carries over between reloads and sessions. Here are some comparison screenshots. They were taken at 1920x1080, and there wasn't much fisheye at 100 degrees. I settled at 95 degrees.

Default FOV (I'm guessing around 60-70)
80 degrees
90 degrees
100 degrees.

Note, if you open the console, Achievements will be disabled for that session. Exiting the game and reloading it will re-enable achivements. So, once you find a value that works, if this works, then make the change in the INI.

Due to all the issues I'm hearing I'm leaning heavily towards using an Xbox 360 controller whilst playing my PC copy of the game. When I plug it in will the controls default to the Xbox standard or will I have to map it all out? Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Don't bother with this game on PC. It's not worth the trouble. Bethesda has all but ignored the requirements for making a serviceable PC port. Just get it for Xbox, it's clearly what they intended.

yes, it defaults to the 360 standard, in other words, plug and play. Just make sure you select the 360 controller in the game settings as it may not automatically use that controller input until told to.

Any remapping will be because you want something different than stock.

Or you can get an Xbox 360 controller and all UI problems are solved.

^This^

Obviously it's a package deal with Microsoft... Force the PC guys to buy an Xbox, if they have strong will power, just break them with [censored] "console ported" UI and force them to buy a 360 controller.

Thanks, it seems like this will be the better way to play for now seeing as the control scheme was designed around the device. Left trigger left hand right trigger right hand seems to feel smoother anyway.

Congrats Bethesda! YOU WON! :)

*hands your award*

This is definitely the worst PC gaming interface I've ever seen.

But the game is great. *group hugs*
Yes, this is the worst consolport game interface I've been usin in a PC GAME and the game has lots of bugs too, can't you (bethesda) do a game without bugs: Morrowind - bugs bugs bugs, Oblivion - bugs bugs bugs, Fallout 3 - bugs bugs bugs. Do it right from the start.

Been playing a good couple of hours now and since my first complainy post about the UI I find I'm getting used to it. About the only thing I cant get right is sheath/unsheath weapon - keep hitting the 3rd person/1st person toggle all the time.

The UI definitely needs some work but I have seen a lot worse before. I'd rank it 4/10. Would have got higher if it hadnt been so jarringly out of character with the game (minimalist UI for a graphically sumptuous game)

http://qkme.me/35a19l If I wanted to play it on the console, I would've got it for a console. I understand that some people prefer a controller, mouse and key are default applications for a PC and many PC gamers like it that way. Telling them that the main input device on their port is wrong and that's their problem is not constructive.

Skyrim's UI is vastly superior to Oblivion's UI as far as I'm concerned. Oblivion's system, with it's tabbed menus (and tabs within tabs) was the worst UI I have ever seen.
Better than Oblivion's!? Female canine, you appear to be stumbling!

Oh I agree, I just meant that switching to a console controller is better than switching to the console entirely if the only problem you're considering switching for is UI related. ;)

That sentence made me really sad all of the sudden, haha. It's like a million endorphins flooded my brain with hope that the UI would eventually fixed, and then were suddenly silenced with a realistic vision of the future....

Haha.

Darnify!

Um, hope the dude's still around.

This is one of the reasons why I'm not going to buy it right away. The UI bit was a question, and I like spreadsheets for quick anolysis of data.

(sits back to watch more fireworks)

5. when i turn off crosshair in the menuthe sneak crosshair still remains on
6. no toggle hotkey for the interface/hud
