The worst PC gaming interface award goes to ... SKYRIM!

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 5:45 pm

The topic creator is absolutely correct about how hideous this interface is

I had to take a video showing how bad it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePVVERC_nvs

There is absolutely no excuse for this.

Oh no, you have to use the keyboard... like every [censored] time...

How is using WASD at points makes it "better" for consoles?

And, again you can still use mouse in the menu screen.
Oh wait, it's a list, so it's instantly horrible, silly me

I think the term that puts that into perspective is D-pad, not WASD;
WASD keys are generally bad for multiple keypresses at a time in different directions since the orientation is kinda weird if you think about it; D-pads you're just mostly using your thumb
That's why you don't use the KB for fighting games; where FPS's are more there's more button holding than tapping.

I'll add my voice to this thread - the UI is such an utter F that it brings your A game down to a C+. If I could ignore the UI and just enjoy the game, I'd give you at least a B overall, but the UI has so many flaws that it keeps jerking me out of my immersion. You've lost a customer. I sure hope the guys over at Zenimax Online aren't following Bethesda's lead and making their MMO for the console crowd while simultaneously throwing a big middle finger at the PC players. Matt Firor - please don't hang around with Pete Hines! Please!

Stop freaking overreacting. It's a little clunky at moments, and sometimes I press the wrong button. But I do that with all my games. And I think the menus look heaps better than Oblivion.

Skyrim's UI is vastly superior to Oblivion's UI as far as I'm concerned. Oblivion's system, with it's tabbed menus (and tabs within tabs) was the worst UI I have ever seen.
I must agree with this. I started playing expecting it to be very bad indeed and was so happy it was an improvement from Oblivion's.

I actually quite like it.

You know - it's not even so much that it's worse for the PC crowd, it's that the PC crowd has to actually suffer through the horrible UI that was created for systems that don't have the simple, elegant abilities that a mouse and keyboard afford you. Yes - dragging and dropping things, having hotkeys, hovering the cursor over items/menus for info - all these simple things that have been a part of PC gaming for DECADES are lost because we need to play a game that was developed for a console with a crippled input interface.

It took me a while to realise that using the mousewheel in the character creation and scrolling to the various options was far more effective than trying to click on them.

I wish we could enjoy the game, but unfortunately, the interface is hardly usable unless you have an xbox controller, and if i wanted an xbox controller, i would've bought one of those useless consoles...

Useless? LOL, with all the complaints about the PC version i'm glad i bought it for console. svcks to be you guys, PC users always hold themselves above us console players, I guess the game decided to slap you in the face this time. HAHA :D

"QA testers for mouse and keyboard? What for? :D"

But this is nothing to be happy about. People don't say "consoles svck, PC rules" because they wanna take part in those Xbox-PS3-Wii console wars; they say it because it's friggin true. The PC just allows you more options 100% of the time because it gives you direct access to all the data files. Modding? No problem. Manual bug fixes? Sure thing. "Cheat codes?" Check. There's no reason for Bethesda to downgrade themselves and base everything off the Xbox as standard.

PC users aren't complaining because the controls svck, per se, but because compared to a PC standard they svck. I'm sure they're just as good as the Xbox controls, and while that's no problem for Xbox fans, it is for PC users; we're used to more accurate and spot-on controls. I play the game and I feel like I'm actually using a joystick to control my movements instead of a keyboard and mouse. The game is very limited control-wise and there's no need for it to be. It's pure laziness that they didn't even bother to re-tweak the controls so that we PC users can get the convenience we were expecting.

Give it a little time and I'm sure it'll get patched up. It is kinda annoying that so many buttons won't gain focus when moused over. I've just been using the arrow keys in the interim. Another thing is that if 'R' is set to toggle 1'st/3'rd and you use it to 'Take All' (better suited to 'A' like in Fallouts I'd say), your perspective will swap after emptying a container. Still, It's amazing so far in every single other capacity.

The UI's a bit clunky at times and clearly designed for consoles first (can't hit "w" again to wait or sleep, for example) but mods will fix it, so in the long run it's not a big issue.

I am sick of reading this. I'm not looking for mods to fix the game, the dev's should.

Console users never hold themselves above, though?

Honestly, "this time" only applies to Skyrim. This has been happening since companies cross-platformed. It's just exponentially worse for PC gamers than console gamers. Unfortunately there are too many "fix it yourself" or "stop whining" attitudes out there that bring no productive measures to the table whatsoever, and are just waste of bandwith. The users should not have to fix a product themselves, and lapdogs should not grief those who are troubled by a game's issues.

Anyways, while the current interface is bad, I'm more in favor of voting Resident Evil 4 or Bully ports as worst interface on PC. I admit, though, there might be a game out there that is even a worse port. Which is why I try to avoid ports, but it gets harder every year.

Congrats Bethesda! YOU WON! :)

*hands your award*

This is definitely the worst PC gaming interface I've ever seen.

But the game is great. *group hugs*

if your game is legit and updated, you wont have that issue...... mouse works fine. If you are playing an outdated (if there is such a thing) or PIRATED version mouse+interface is screwy.

solution: buy the game

(For the record, i bought the game, a friend of mine pirated and was whining to me about the interface, then he came over and tried mine and said "wtf, guess im going to have to buy now", LOL.)

I don't know about the mouse lag/highlighting issues, but most complaints about the interface is not that. I guess assuming everyone who has issues with the game are pirates/have pirated copies makes the world a little bit brighter.

Lol - I have the retail version and the mouse is not fine and the UI is to put it likely all cosmetic show and little usability for people that actually are able to use a keyboard and prefer it

Bethesda have done an absalutely horrible job with the pc version.
No actual DX11 features, terrible consolized interface. Hell, you can't even change any options in the main menu, it's copy pasted from the console version.

Well I bought the game and the mouse/key interface is horrid. It's clunky and and not very intuitive. I'm still playing the game and enjoying it but the PC interface is really really bad and clearly shows it's a console port.

Why would you use diagonal movement in a menu?

And again, if this UI has problems, they're general problems, not PC only problems.

The consoles show more information somehow? The consoles show your equipped items all the time? The consoles give you a quick summary from all of your items?

And I still stand behind how Morrowind had much worse UI, even if it is "PC friendly". If you're saying drag-n-dropping and double clicking everything and hovering over several nondescript, exactly the same icons to get an idea what the item actually is, is much better, then you're just full of it.

You seem to be mistaken "users" with "platform".
And yes, the pc is capabible of more and should be help to a higher standard.

Your attitude is very petty and childish. Grow up.

Use wsad, and E=enter, so one hand navigates/selects everything. And exits too, with tab. It svcks we can't see stats of everything, but I fly through the menu now. Selling is actually so fast too, no need to move my mouse around and select crap.

Not the worst but it is very clunky. Its also for some strange reason ultra-minimalist which just doesnt fit the game at all. It feels like a film noir interface that should be in some gritty New York crime busting game not a game set in pseudo viking lands.

Considering how much time they quite obviously spent doing the game itself it seems strange that they have tagged on what looks like a 5 minute job in MS Paint for a UI.

I think it will be a big markdown in reviews. Luckily the game seems worth the intense annoyance that is steam and the clunky interface.

There is a lot of "really devoted fan denial" in this post. I understand you all have been waiting for this game for many years.. as I have. BUT this game's UI is simply terrible. How will anything get changed if people keep arguing against the obvious? Play the game on xbox and come back to PC. It's hard to see what changes they made.. at all.. other then a crappy control port where you have to guess wether or not it's time to click or press enter.

Like cmon Bethesda.. really?

I don't mind the UI all that much, better mouse support and smaller fonts would be nice but the big issue for me is the keyboard remapping madness, (Tons of keys are reserved, many can't be remapped, some can be remapped but if you do some functions will no longer work properly (remapping the action key from e to MB5 causes me to become unable to loot books for example, i can open them using MB5 but once open i can't loot them (it still lists the default key as the loot key but neither button has any effect)) as a leftie it basically makes the entire game unplayable. (My right wrist starts to hurt after ~15 minutes of playing with the default layout due to the wierd twisting i have to do to reach some of the keys (My thumb and pinky have quite different reach (as is the case for most humans as we got opposable thumbs))).
