The worst PC gaming interface award goes to ... SKYRIM!

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 5:10 am

Let's be honest - UI design is not and has never been Bethesda's strong point. The new UI may look better than Oblivion's but funtionality and usability wise for a mouse user (which I expect a look of PC gamers are using) it is quite frankly poor to the point I've seen primary school kids design better

BTW Hi Pseron long time no see

Summation of this thread (and many others to come):

Person 1: LOVE the game! UI is kinda glitchy for me tho. Otherwise, great game!

Person 2: You are a moron. The UI is perfect. Obviously yours is working the exact same as mine. Quit your *****ing.

Person 1: But... I'm just trying to report my bugs and see if others can help....

Person 3: SERIOUSLY DUDE, SHUT UP! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS GAME!

I feel like I must be playing a completely different game than some people. The interface/UI is fine for me, sole exception being some navigation difficulties with the perk screen (because I'm already used to navigating with the WASD keys and neglect to use the mouse :P). I actually like it for the most part.

Only the perk tree and character select gave me problems with mouse, char selection has some visual alignment issues on the sliders.

The navigation on the perk trees can be a little wierd, but I can live with that, since we're leveling up and the game is paused, so no hurries.
Actually, in the whole game is like this, could be better, but you can get around just fine.

The only thing that I REALLY find annoying is the favourites/hotkey system.
It's pretty much broken, why not have different lists for each hand? And better yet, have the ability to keybind different keys for each hand.
That would help a lot.

But I'm not too worried, since it should be simple enough for the modders to solve this.
And until then, I can enjoy the game just fine.

How can people even defend Skyrims trashy UI on PC? Half of the time it doesn't even register clicks properly. They spent a minimal amount of time on making the UI work with a mouse that much is obvious.

As early as the character creation menu you see how poor the UI is when working with the mouse. Using keys to navigate a UI on a PC game? Bwahahahaha.

I dont understand why the hell they havent made it so you can see whats equipped in each slot yet like nearly every other RPG out right now, Dragon age origins for example, why couldnt they make an inventory like that?

The UI for PC is horrendous and really detracts from the rest of the game. I became so frustrated I actually quit while attempting to design my character and only came back to try again last hour. Why does it reset all slider values when you rotate your characters head? I mean seriously. And I sat there clicking for 10 minutes on sliders trying to figure out why it wasn't working, the very least you could have provided is a pop-up telling us how to navigate your atrocious UI.

Rest of the game looks decent so far, but the UI gets me so mad makes me wanna arrrRRRRRrrgGGGHHHHH !@#!@#@!#

WASD is really the only way to navigate the menus, especially for character creation sliders. I hope they at least take a second look at it, and include some tweaks in an official capacity.
So i can't use up,down,left,right arrows?

How about you post a picture of it so the people who don't have PC's can see it.

My only real complaints with the UI are the favorites system and navigating perks.

1. Give me a hotkey system. I have over 100 keys on my keyboard. It's a PC game, let me use those damn keys

2. My mouse works fine in game, but navigating the perks is still annoying as hell. Let me view an entire perk tree, and see what each perk does simply by hovering over it with the mouse.

Yes, I am fully aware of the fact that this is a console game ported to the PC but Bethesda, you've made millions off PC gamers over the years. Please show a little more appreciation for those of us who have been playing Elder Scrolls for decades and give us a REAL PC UI. This console UI is a blatant slap in the face to a demographic that was your exclusive market for many years. For those of us in that demographic, this is a small yet persistent thorn in the side of an otherwise excellent game.

Very well said. I couldn't add any more. As a programmer I know how little effort it would take to improve the UI. They do not need to make the same key responsible for multiple functions on a PC. Yes, it would take 1 programmer time to allow for REAL keymapping, and yes, someone would have to QA that, but it would be a bone they could throw at us PC users.

They don't do it because Microsoft would be mad at them for having a PC version that is more usable than the Xbox. It comes down to that.

Have to agree the UI for the PC is just underdone and dissapointing. Been playing for 8 hours now and its still an immersion breaking distraction. This not a good thing for any game. Clumsy is the word of it and thats such a shame given the attention to detail that was given to the other aspects of the game. Petty much all the complaints above are vaild Im begining to wonder if they have just decided to dump what should be their own basic development work onto the modders. Sad day for Bethesda if that was the reasoning behind it and that does bode well for future games.

I mostly love the UI. I like that I can control almost everything with WASD, E, R and tab, which is much faster than clicking with a mouse (ie. pipboy UI ).

If you remap some of the keys, the menus do not reflect the changed keys. Also, ability to hotkey weapons setups would be nice. Monumental pain in the butt to swap weapons/spells, even with the favorites thing.

I rate the interface as poor. Maybe I need to buy a controller, but I shouldn't have to do that to play a PC game.

Some people are having problems, others aren't. The only time I have real problems with the UI is when trying to run the game at Surround resolutions (5760x1080), where you have the zoom in problem and the menus/UI are unusable. In single-monitor mode it's fine...but I do want that Surround problem fixed. Aside from the Surround issue, I haven't had mouse issues or anything of the sort in any of the menus. That isn't to say people aren't having problems, just that perhaps those problems (aside from user preference coloring their perspective) are the result of bugs, which means it can or will hopefully be fixed.

Game's UI made a really bad first impression in that the character creation sliders are broken on PC. They do not work as intended.

I also don't appreciate the tab-menu, the innavigable perk trees, the lack of shortcuts for weapon switches, or having to repeatedly click to select quantities or confirm dialogs like "Are you sure you want to craft xyz?" with no shortcuts.

It's an incredibly sloppy UI that does not match the experience of the rest of the title.

That said, the game is stellar and Bethesda deserves all the lavish praise they get. I can live with the UI until it gets modded. That's why I play Elder Scrolls games.

The interface is a nightmare. Just clicking the sliders to try and change the appearance of my character seemed like an ordeal. The interface seems clunky and unresponsive to mouse-clicks.

They've only started porting the game to the PC in the last month ? :flamethrower:

Somehow, I think modding in mouse call backs is a lot harder being hardcoded than just the xml interfaces before ? Makes you think if there'll ever be a mod to fix the UI in the long run.

Oh no, you have to use the keyboard... like every [censored] time...

How is using WASD at points makes it "better" for consoles?

And, again you can still use mouse in the menu screen.
Oh wait, it's a list, so it's instantly horrible, silly me

No... Just no... Oblivion had worse UI, and many other games before Skyrim and after Oblivion had way worse.
