Tired of the "quest hand-holding" complaint

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 8:07 pm

With about 50 active quests in my log and three weeks playing, who knows?
That is sort of the point, you see, one needs to rely on quest markers because there is no adequate other information stored.

Also, I have encountered many, many quests that do not even give any kind of directional info in the dialogue stage.
Particularly in the misc. quest section, but a surprising number of 'big' quests as well.

The quest log (I daren't call it a journal) is so bad in this respect.

When I first started playing Skyrim, I kept trying to click the misc. quests for more information, but to no avail...

It's not as big a deal as some people say I think. I'm just glad that Bethesda got things right that actually mattered the most, like the expansive, dynamic world, beautifully designed dungeons and landscapes, and interesting characters. That the "journal" is crap is a minor complaint to me. I just slow down and take each quest one at a time and have no problems.

Indeed. For a long time I thought there must be a tab or something that I just hadn't found yet. Somewhere that elaborates on these things. Nope, Bethesda just figured not to include it.

A lot of the quests in Skyrim don't even tell you where you're going in the dialogue. They just plop a marker on your map, and many of them cannot be completed with clues gleamed through dialogue. I actually tried to play with the marker disabled, but I just couldn't find things with the lack of information given.

Remember Morrowind? You were given directions in the quest dialogue."turn left at the fork, keep going until you see a tomb on your right". Searching for entrances was aggravating, but finding things actually provided a sense of adventure. In Skyrim I just pressed A until the quest marker was in the middle of the compass, held down the W and started hitting things. Doing quests felt like I was just making the donuts rather than developing a story. It felt like I was playing WoW. Stopped reading quests halfway into the game because I knew they would tell me absolutely nothing that I needed to know in order to finish the quest.

Call me a complainer, I really don't give a damn.

I completely agree with you on pretty much all points.

That is just blatantly false. I own the damn Prima Players guide. I can see for myself TONS of quests with no map markers. My character has received a lot without markers as well.

So far i like the Quests Menu and Markers. I can not fast-travel to any them until they are 1st actually physically discovered tho, so i do not consider it handholding. BTW Please, Where can i get the Skyrim Prima Players Guide u speak of? Is it a book/manual i can have sent to me or is it an online manual that i can only see when i am online, like the one steam offers now? My Skyrim only came with a tiny beginner booklet. I looked at Bethesda to order a real guidebook that peeps speak of, but did not see one for sale there.

I have never ran into any quests that have no markers, all quests will go into your journal and they can all be turned on. If you play on the Xbox go to the Miscellaneous quests, move the pointer arrow over and press A you can turn on any quests to activate the markers. There are no quests that I saw that didn't have a marker you could turn on for it

Another quest came from an assassin who attacked me. It was just like the first Tribunal quest in Morrowind. The Assassin had a note, signed with someone's name. Who is this person? Why are they trying to kill me? That's for me to research and figure out. The quest has begun.

I've seen plenty of these awesome "quests.". When you do find the person they won't acknowledge they hired assassins or even dislike you. They'll be very friendly because the game sends these assassins at you and assigned the name of someone you stole from. That's it, nothing more.

I completely agree. all you have to do is turn the quest off from your journal if you don't wan't a marker... and if you don't want a compass either you can turn that off in the settings menu. So if you don't want any help like map markers or even your compass (which i could understand that being annoying, because it shows you where caves and such are located when you get close) just turn off the hud opacity. It's what i do and i don't get any help from the game.
