Started The Last Story after Xenoblade Chronicles, and already played it for ~15 hours. Not as good as I had hoped, but not bad either.
It took me about 40 hours to do everything in The Last Story, taking my time of course. Despite getting off to what I thought was a somewhat slow start, things really picked up. The story was very predictable throughout, but I also thought that it and a number of the characters were really well done.
It's hard for me to say which I liked more, Xenoblade or The Last Story, but it is one of my favorite RPGs this generation. Two great games for the Wii to go out on though.
Dusted off my copy of Final Fantasy XII recently. It's strange how one of my least favorite entries in the series plot and character-wise is also the one I've played the most of. Criticisms of those aspects aside, there's just something very..alluring and ultimately satisfying about gradually moving up the ranks and taking on the big baddies. Even better with an underleveled party, which I easily accomplish by only farming LP on extremely weak enemies. It's also one of the best games in the series to do challenge runs in, mostly thanks to the extremely open character customization and real-time combat.
I didn't really care for anything about XII back when it came out, but it's really grown on me. I don't mind the story/characters that much (though I am upset we never got to see Matsuno's original scenario for the game), but the gameplay, level design and art direction is essentially what I want from the series moving forward. As Final Fantasy VII influenced JRPGs in general following its success, I've been hoping for a while now that Square would look to XII and build off of it for future entries in the series.
Areas weren't too linear, the combat was extremely flexible and the License Board probably allowed for the most customizable characters since Final Fantasy V (even though I
really liked International Zodiac Job System's job-specific License Boards).
