Weapons, Mods and Ammo Mega-Thread #7

Post » Sun Feb 06, 2011 5:12 am

As I was enjoying my nightly cigar whilst cleaning the pool, I had a thought. Yes, I know, these things can be dangerous. But I wondered about how loading ammo types will work? I know the mechanics of how to do it, but I wonder what will happen when you run out of, say, Semi-wadcutters for your 9mm Pistol? Bear with me a second here: So I equip my 9mm pistol with stock ammo, and decide that I wish to swap that out for SWC. I select 9mm SWC in the pip-boy and when I close out the pip-boy, the reload animation runs and I know have a full mag of SWC. I assume that if I start firing my 9mm, that when that mag runs out, the game will auto load a fresh mag of 9mm SWC. It will do this until I run out of 9mm SWC. What happens then? Will my weapon click empty and I'll have to go into the pip-boy and select another ammo type, or will the game default my ammo back to the basic ammo? If it does default back, then what ammo type does it select? Is there a tier of ammo types for each caliber? Let's say that the three ammo types for 9mm are FMJ, SWC and JHP. If I select JHP, then run out, will it automatically switch to SWC, and then finally to FMJ? Or will the pistol run out of ammo each time, forcing me to enter the pip-boy and manually select each ammo type every time?

I think it'll automatically load that ammo type until you completely run out. Only makes sense to do that..

So your pip-boy can magiacally feed you full mags of the ammo you are currently loading, but is not sophisticaed enough to automatically change to the next most effective ammo type when out? I'm not buying it. Even if I imagine that the pc is just pulling mags from his pockets (automatically by game mechanic) then why can't the pc just grab a mag loaded with different ammo when he's out of one kind?

Sawed-off shotguns are prevolent. How about Sawed-off rifles? Take the barrel and stock of a M1 Garand and you have one scary man-mangler.

lol I guess so. Something you gotta just roll with. Maybe they'll load the original load...

Dude. Taking the barrel off would render the gun non-functional. Sawing it off to a few inches and removing the stock would be akin to the mosin-nagant pistol. Polish farmers (or some country taken by the nazi's) would saw the stocks and barrels off of the 7.62x54R russian caliber firing bolt action rifle that is the mosin-nagant. This kicked so bad, they had to put their thumbs aligned with their index fingers, or it would break. Now i know an m1 is semi-automatic, but i don't know how you could make that thing one handed, even by sawing it off alot. The full sized one kicks like a mo fo. Without a stock or barrel, you're looking at sprained wrists, or broken noses. ;)

Edit: forgot to say that they did that to the guns to take out german officers. And the barrel length wasn't long enough to stabilize the bullet, so it tumbled out of the barrel. Caused HORRIBLE wounds.

It is my theory that the Pip-Boy has a built-in quantum storage device and distributes weight on the PCs shoulders, and the Pip-Boy glove can bring items from storage with nerve stimulation if the item is selected in the Pip-Boy

@x7hetcetc this a world of nuke launchers and power armor, bear with me, i did not mean to cut the barrel off entirely, just enough to conceal it, High strength requirement for recoil

This. And completely taking away the strenths of the weapon. Rifles fire high powered rounds very accurately over long distances. If you shorten the barrel, you lose a ton of muzzle velocity and there goes both the bullet energy and the accuracy. There's a reason why when they kept making carbines smaller and smaller, that they ended up with a much lighter round and higher rates of fire.

He's wondering what happens when you run out of that ammo. Will it switch to the next best ammo? Will it go back to standard rounds? Will you have to choose your next ammo from the pip-boy?

That's the exact same rational I use for how the damn thing works. Great minds and all that, right? Although I do wonder sometimes how they can figure out cold fusion and quantum physics and not the damn transistor.

I concede Sawed-off rifles are bad idea.
I would like to see a .44 Derringer Pocket Pistol, small and powerful.

Yeah. That or a .38. Since both .44 Special and .38 Special are in the game as ammo sub-types of .44mag and .357mag, I see no reason why Josh wouldn't use the basic model for the .32 revovler from FO3, shorten the barrel and make it a nice little saturday night special to sneak into the casinos.

That is the perfect idea!
Personally, i'd like a m134, i got a little place to hide it. Don't think too hard about that ;)

Seriously though, that is a great idea. I really hope they did. I don't know what they'd base it off of but the subcompact glock is a pretty small pistol. Never fired it but have played around with it. Maybe a tiny 50 cal pistol? xD
It would be really neat if you could saw off the 20 gauge over under and stick it in your boot or something. I've got a little project me and a friend are working on for a remington 1740. Pump action double barrel. ;)

Speaking of sneaking, Why have a gun when knives are much stealthier? You say range, I say poisoned throwing knives.

That is true. But personally, i can't hit crap with a throwing knife. I'm lucky if it lands in the direction i threw it. But they do make some very slim knives. I almost purchased some yesterday, they were like 3 dollars and very small, but they didn't come in a sheath or anything and i didn't want to like put them in my pocket because they were quite sharp, and i don't want to get stabbed down there. Or anywhere. But yes knives are very concealable. But, firearms are the traditional concealed weapons for gentlemen. ;)

Small size is great, its silent and you need only a flick of the wrist to send poision into the back of a naysayer, and you can do so publicly and not get caught, the throw is nigh imperceivable.

Have you thrown knives before? If someone moves you miss. If you are off by a tiny bit you miss and then a knife goes past their face and then they pull their 6 shooter out and blast you in the face. And it would be easier to stab them in the back or side and leave it and slip away than too throw it.

Yes, but the game doesn't need to be realistic to level that you're constantly missing with your throwing knives. Plus, why would the other guy have a gun if they are taken away upon entry?

If you can conceal a knife, can't I conceal my .32 derringer? I've held derringers, (small 2 shot pistols designed for pockets) that are as small as knives. And knives arc, and spin, but hey i mean if it works for you go ahead, i don't mean to hate on ya. :)

I never said you can't conceal firearms, I was just saying I don't thing other NPCs will be able to. Or do we already know if they can.

Casino employees will. Thanks for defendin my knives. On another note of moving targets: If you are spewing lead from a 10mm Tommy with a 50 round drum, will the NPCs scramble behind cover instead of the whole walk-and-shoot fail strategy of FO3? Will they recognize the fire superiority?

I've seen some footage of the Kings gangsters act simarily but they look like they back up more. Not sure if the AI has improved or not.

Fire Superiority: Having more lead flying away from you than towards you, tends to snowball.

Speaking of concealable weapons, has there been any word on punch-daggers? That'd a small, silent weapon. Also, a better knife for that sort of situation is the Fairbairn & Sykes Fighting knife, it's small and slim enough to simply slip up into a wrist sheath under your sleeve and long and slim enough to easily penetrate between ribs and slice throats.
