So, what are your opinions of Dawnguard so far?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 12:58 am

They said it was SI's size, but I think that was the hype talking.

Did they? I thought they just compared the length of the main quests.

Anyway, I suppose I'm just speculating, I'm expecting Beth to save their big hitter DLC for last like they did with Oblivion. Hope I'm right on that...

SI was the swansong. I pray Beth return to that approach; save the best til last!

So it turns out SI was after KotN, though they continued to release things like the Mehrunes Razor quest.

So I'm at work and have yet to play Dawnguard (though it is downloaded), and was just wondering, for those who have played it, what do you think? Please don't give big spoilers or anything!

It's super buggy. I'm still trying to defeat the bugs so I can start the quest line.

I must say, I have looked a Lets play, and I can't share the good general opnion on this DLC. I am very disappointed. SImply because everything is average. No suprises in the story, very archetypic characters, and also I don't find the other new stuff impressing, the new architecture don't reach the level of the vanilla game (Like Windhelm, Markarth or Whiterun, but sadly the great concept Artist of Shivering Isles, Fallout 3 and Skyrim is dead and I think this is noticeable in this dlc), the most important artifact is a cheap retexture of a Vanilla bow, which could be done by every average modder who can handle Photoshop. Generally it seems that TES turned in completly generic fantasy, it's all very replaceable. Nothing compared to the level of for example "the Witcher". And that's a problem for me, TES, mostly Morrowind but partwise also Skyrim is for me fascinating because of the world itself. I always thougt of TES is something unique, a interessting Universe with complex politcs, cultures, legends. But it seems this is gone over the years and now finally with Dawnguard, it seems to be very poor/average entertaiment.

Wouldn't it be for my liking of an Openworldstyle Fantasyworld and the rich modding communty, I wouldn't be interessted in TES anymore.

And sorry for my english.

^Cool VIdar, and yeah I must admit I didn't like the Werewolf thrd person view either, though it does seem like the advantages of being a vamp lord are alot better than as ww, so do you transform back after a certain period of time like in ww mode?
yea but werewold is alot better now thanks to the new perktree(makes doing the comapions a bit better) espically being able to , 100% incress in melee(over 4 perks) 100 incress to health and stamina, feeding heals twice as much some good stuff then there is the totem bases perks but I think the best is the summon 2 spirit werewolfs which is sweat. I used to neverplay my wearwolf cause it svcked but alot funner to do now.

It's good, I'm happy.

I think it was priced pretty fairly, current stuff I'm found/seen/done and that gamers instinct for potential stuff still to find/see/do tells me I'm getting value for my money.
I'm only doing vamp stuff on my current character and I'll be making a new character to join the Dawnguard (who will obviously be doing other questlines in the gamethat I've been saving for a "good" character) so that's another playthrough (character number 4) guaranteed thanks to this dlc.

Cheers Bethesda, not a bad job at all. ;)

Bizzy, I partly agree with you. However I think that you aren't giving Bethesda enough credit, over the past 6 months, not only have they been well...resting and reflecting upon the awesome game that they made, but they've been working on Dawnguard and most likely other DLC, they've been having to deal with all sorts of bugs and issues especially with the PS3, they had to get the Creation Kit ready for PC players, and they also suffered through the loss of one of their great artists like you said. To still have all that occur, and create a piece of DLC, that is longer than many FULL GAMES in itself and appears to generally please the masses is quite a feat. However I do agree that at least from what I've played so far I can see what you mean by them just "re-skinning" vanilla Skyrim stuff, but honestly if you look at the series as a whole, they are all basically the same game. Where the difference lies is in the story telling, and so I don't have a full comment on that yet since i haven't gotten close to finishing, but from what ive played so far it seems at least up to par with the rest of Skyrim's quests, I wouldn't say that it is any worse. But heck, if I'm able to at least stay somewhat entertained by this for at least 10 hours or so, i'd definitley say money well spent :)

Well you're rigtht, but the important thing of why I get in TES, is still now getting very dissapointing for me. Everything I saw in this DLC is like Fantasy in it's most generic form. It's seems that Bethesedas motivation isn' to create a world, to great something that can be compared to art and even to great a interessting story. There motivation seems for me now to make "awesome" things. That meens more to great a Sword, Magic Dragon simulator. The thinking isn't to put something in because it would be fitting, it would be extend something. No they put it simply in because it's "awesome": Dragons? Awesome so it get in. Vampirelords like I saw it yesterday in Underworld? Awesome so it get in. So that game seems for me more handle like a toy, when you understand what I try to say with "toy".

And well, they are a very big company so they must handle such things. And this "more thant other full games". Well don't like this sentence you compare it to other games like shooters, Adventures. You must compare it to similar Games, best to open World games.

I hope so hopefully we get a Shivering Isles and w Bloodmoon sized add ons, I hope this is more than Knight of the Nine that was not an expansion it was a glorified DLC.
I feel like it is a bit more than kotn but I feel like it is alot better, adding cross bows and VL( 2 new game mechanics) kotn did not add anything really game changing although the crusader armor was epic( hated the dont comit crim thing) but really am enjoying dawngaurd.

I can somewhat agree with you on the fact that it does seem like they are just trying to throw in things that are "awesome", but on the other hand, I just honestly can't say that this DLC feels any different from how Oblivion and Skyrim have always been....granted I never really played Morrowind, so I can't comment on that game, though many gamers seem to feel like it is still the best in the series, but I dont know. And the only reason I'm comparing it to other any other games is just to say that you are definitley getting the "bang" for your buck. If I'm going to pay $20 and get more content from any kind of game than I would spending $60, then I am probably going to be a little more lenient on things like storyline and imagery...but hey maybe thats just me. I honestly don't think that the DLC has necessarily gotten worse or anything, it's just different, and if you don't like it then you don't like it. But I myself honestly am able to appreciate this bit of DLC though I'm not all that far just because of how dark it is compared to the rest of Skyrim. I'm not gonna lie, fighting Gargoyles and undead things in a shadowy land has scared the crap outta me, and im sure theres only more to come.
