Who misses picking a Class

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:24 am

I love Elder Scrolls, I've played every game and as a lot of people dissapointed that Bethesda continues to dumb down the RPG element of the series. It really is a small thing but I truly miss the ability to choose a class. It's still one if my favorite moments in Morrowind when you walk into the Census office to pick your class and after playing Skyrim for 60+ hours it's the one really big thing I miss. I'm just curious if it's just me or if others feel the same?

I understand the reason for class removal, but at the same time, yes I do miss picking a class.

I don't need a computer to tell me my menacing orc in Steel Armor with a massive claymore is a warrior.

There's more freedom in this system, both in gameplay mechanics and roleplay. I can change my characters strategies to adapt to different challenges, and I can change them slightly to stick with stuff that might happen in his story. For example, say that I start trying to learn Enchanting when I'm at level 20. I'd be at a fairly major disadvantage if I was a class that didn't have it as a major skill.

I do. I think it's pretty lame to have a all knowing all powerful god character. What happened to replay value, insted of justdoing everything all in one go with one character. My friend thinks im wierd because im constantly starting new characters t do different sets of quests, and limiting myself when I do (IE no dagger spam on smithing and so on)

Don't miss it at all. In my mind it was useless and I couldn't care less if it never came back or if it did.

I don't because I always made a custom one anyway...I can pretty much just start playing my custom class instead of picking one in Skyrim.

There is plenty of replay value without picking a class...just play your class, this game is way better to NOT have jack of all trades characters, there may be some flaws to the perks system, and it's kind of sad to not have attributes, but at least on some level you are forced to make decisions about what perks to take instead of just leveling skills.

I don't know about you, but I haven't done that in Skyrim, but I did in Oblivion. I had a character with every ability maxed in Oblivion, and I'm not crazy enough to even TRY to max every ability on my Orc in Skyrim. It'd be suicide.

And you just said yourself that you can still easily limit yourself, but you still have the capability to do everything. Which is, literally, the motto of TES.

I thought I would but I really do not. If it weren't for not picking classes I would've never found Restoration and Enchanting. I'm the type of player who picked his 7 skills in OB and only used those. In SK, I had perks left over that I wanted to put into different skills and I first found Enchanting. I then found Restoration at level 73 and am disappointed I didn't find it 50 levels earlier. The wards are remarkable and the healing is very useful when my char only has 150 hp. Although, the circle spells are really useless and haven't found much of a use for them quite yet.

The only thing I miss would be classifying my character. I would like to give myself a class, just not be limited on the number of skills I take for the reason I just stated above.

I think the ability to work outside of a pre determined class is the best and biggest contribution Beth has made to rpg game lately.

Um, no. Picking a class has never actually been present in Elder Scrolls games at all. If you want that go play Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate. Morrowind just had a few worthless choices at the beginning, it wasn't a significant class choice... You could still learn and use all the spells, heavy armor, etc. I actually feel Skyrim has MORE class variation with the trees than Morrowind.

I still pick a class................its just not written down on the screen anymore.

My Warriors still use 2 handed, Heavy Armor etc, my mages never used any armour or 1 handed/2handed weapons etc

The only benefit I see from an explicit class system is some extra dialogue and recognition from NPCs. I mean, it'd be kind of cool if they recognized specific traits. Like if you were a battlemage.

I agree with this completely. The perk trees really make the classes more defined. Perks show your character more than any class system did in any previous ES game.

Great design choice by bethesda

I don' use all skills, so I have a custom class for my character. Some players will like to be able to access all skills and make a godlike character, like in Morrowind. For others, because it is possible doesn't mean it must be done and there is more freedom to create a very specialized custom character than wih the major/minor skill just by no using some skills
Actually I have a character using only 5 skills. I think it will finish the game around lvl 50 because the skills will be maxed and except for some quests rewarding with unneeded skill points he will not progress anymore. It doesn' mean because Ateia gives a point in illusion as reward the character will begin to cast spells. He never made a single potion and always sold the ingredients found. This is better than having to choose 7 major and minor skills at the beginning of the game.

Now joining the mage's academy makes the mage, joining the thieves guild makes the thief and joining the bard's academy makes a bard.
The choice is made ingame, it is more natural than creating a battlemage and have him join all factions except the mage's guild.

I miss the birthsigns more than the class. Using a standing stone is not the same

I miss both the attributes, class system and skills leveling from Oblivion. I hate the new perks system.

I don't miss the class selection thing. I make up my own class in my head, I have no need for the game mechanic that specifies it for me.

I don't miss it at all. I remember before Skyrim was announced the vast majority of people on here disliked the class system, and very very few would ever use a preset, instead just opting for a custom class. The perk trees are a massive improvement I think, and I hope they keep that and work on that one in the next TES.

I guess to me it's the classification that I miss the most, not picking skills but having the class that says Warrior or Assassin.

So glad that I didn't have to pick a class because 10 hours in my character was already different than I imagined...20 hours even more different...250 hours, not even close to what I thought in the beginning.

My character is special to my play experience and having that stripped away by a choice at character creation would be a shame.

EDIT: The system only works for those with self control. If you just want to level everything then you can't blame the system for allowing you to.

I completely agree with this. The idea of just playing the way you want and having your character grow accordingly is a cool idea... but it really doesn't work well. It's so stupid that you're able to be good at absolutely everything with a single character.

What? Skyrim's system doesn't lend itself to this, especially with the importance of perks. My two-handed warrior CANNOT use swords, war axes, and maces effectively AT ALL in combat, and is struggling to keep her archery at a competitive level.

The only game I had an All-powerful God character was Oblivion, where, after maxing all my Class skills, I decided to increase my non-class skills, becoming a master MageWarriorThief.

I don't miss picking a class per say, I miss that they could have gone further and tied the Class with a more robust Radiant Story system, that you'd get random mission pertaining to the Parameters you told the game, I want something the game cares about, not what I can make up in my head ;p
