Why do so many people think Oblivion and Morrowind is better

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:28 pm

I say if you think those games are better you should go play them and stop posting in the skyrim forum

fyi the game elements might have been better but the graphics are garbage compared to the beauty of skyrim....also hated the misfire in morrowind and couldn't play for that reason

"It has so much more depth to it." WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY DEPTH? HOW FAR YOU CAN GO UNDER WATER? Seriously, like, what RPG elements make it better.

I'm not asking in a way that makes me seem that I like Skyrim more. I can't do that. Considering I haven't played any other ones. But I simply want to know, what makes it better.

A lot of it was just that the older games had 'more content'; More guilds, more quests, more items and so on. A lot of it is more interesting content - branching quests, twists and surprises, although i've had my share in Skyrim so far. A lot of it was the stats - the previous games had more and Skyrim has fewer and a lot of guys like playing around developing different stat trees. Some of it's just the Lulz.

But i think most of it is that the weather was always better yesterday.

I could kill whatever I wanted to in oblivion, and had no consequences, i have no idea what you are on about.

I wasnt talking about Oblivion.
Oblivion is where the rot started and I honestly thought that after all the critique it so rightly got this time around they would take heed not to make the same mistakes.
Instead the road started in Oblivion got followed further in Skyrim and we have ended up with a very shallow game that puts TES to shame.
When other game companies make a more utalitarian, less generic, more useful and more interesting magic system than a TES game, something is very wrong.
The writing has gone downhill a lot too. Look at what they did to dragons, which used to be one of the most interesting depictions of dragons ever before Skyrim. But I suppose anything that requires a modicum of reflection and thought is a big no-no so they morphed into generic fantasy dragons. Nice.

This is exactly the mindset that's turned the game industry into its current state. All developers need to do is add shiny.

Morrowind and even Oblivion have better RPG elements than Skyrim. The list is so long and has been posted so many times all you have to do is read some of the critical posts about Skyrim to see them.

It's all about being able to put yourself into the game and make it feel like you are in the game. You can't do that with Skyrim. With Skyrim RPG elements have been removed, like classes, attributes, birth signs, spell making. You also have things added, some from Oblivion, that doesn't fit in an RPG, like the GPS compass, the 3D in game map are just a few.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, a lot of people here got their start with Oblivion thus its their favourite game. My favourite was Morrowind because that was my start... my friend always complained that Morrowind wasn't as good as "Daggerfall"... but Daggerfall was his start. I really think that the TES game that gets you in and hooks you to the worlds lore and freedom of exploration, then no matter what comes out it can't measure up to that first time.

In Skyrim it doesn't feel like you are learning anything. Instead of getting better at swinging a sword or casting spells, after you have been in the game a while, you get a "gift" of perks--Okaaay, you've been playing so many hours, here's your prize! I feel like i'm not doing much more than just being here.

Well, I started with Daggerfall, and I never got into Morrowind. But with a bit of perspective I can quite honestly say that Morrowind is a much better game than Daggerfall, even if I will never get into it. Looking back and seeing things like randomized towns that gave you randomized quests to randomized dungeons...oh...that is an awful design. Morrowind is better designed.

It's all about personal preference and flavour, some things that I like, rub other people the wrong way. Hey, some people even like Jar-Jar Binks you know...

I disagree. I started with Daggerfall. I still say that Morrowind was better than Daggerfall. Not by much, they are close, but I give Morrowind the slight edge.

Bethesda can make quality RPG's, it's just a question of them realizing the mistakes they made with Oblivion now with Skyrim.

And yet all you had to do was keep your fatigue up and you'd hit pretty much every time.

Sorry, but it takes a lot more than shiny, pretty graphics for me to claim a game is better.

Why do people say that about old games? Morrowind is a 2002 game, Oblivion is a 2006 game of course the graphics are better in Skyrim, duh!

No, I think you are quite wrong. Judging on what I see on average in the threads discussing Skyrim's quality, Oblivion is the least popular, followed by Morrowind and then Skyrim.

Me, personally, my first TES game was Oblivion. Second Skyrim, then Morrowind (I used the Graphics & Sounds overhaul 2.0 mod as an opportunity to check it out). And I think that Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion, which is the exact opposite of what you claim.

Are you sure about that? Are the people that made them still with Bethesda? For example, i'm fan of the old Homeworld games, but Relic of today could not make a true sequel for it, simply because the people behind it have moved on.

I thought it was obvious too.

Morrowind was a great game if you played it for the story - the mechanics were busted something fierce!
Still loved it though, don't play it anymore. Don't play Oblivion anymore either.

If you want the older Elder Scrolls games more updated graphically, just use graphics mods. I use Oblivion mods and it looks awesome.

I can't imagine anyone liking Oblivion over Skyrim. I booted Oblivion up again the other day out of curiosity and found that, compared to Skyrim, it just svcks in every way.

I can imagine people liking Morrowind over Skyrim though. Although I haven't gotten much of a chance to play Morrowind myself yet, from what I've been told it sounds quite good.

Morrowind was my first ES game. It took me a few play throughs before it really grabbed me. I would tend to get bored when I got to the higher levels, as it becomes quite easy to powergame, and make a god-like character.

If gives you a lot of freedom though, and once I RP'd a character properly I fell in love with the game. It is a rough diamond though. The vanilla game is great, but it takes a lot of mods to get the best out of it.

Oblivion was a bit of a disapointment. I hated the levelscaling mechanic, and the main quest bored me. I think the quests were a bit lame too. The Theives guild and DB quests were great, but on the whole I prefered Morrowinds quests. I still really enjoyed the game. I never did finish the MQ! Mods sorted out a lof off issues for me, but it is still not as fun to play as Morrowind.

I am loving skyrim so far. I have put it 140+ hours now, and i still want to play everyday! I wish they left the stats in, but TBH I am having more fun RP'ing a thief / assassin in Skyrim than I did in Oblivion. I dont get why some people say the missions are boring. Quite a lot of the Morrowind / Oblivion quests are fetch quests, and a lot of them only have a "kill this person" resolution.

Morriwind is still my fav ES game, but I think once the CS gets released Skyrim could be my #1!

Morrowind is better, for the depth it has.

"Depth" means : the gameplay and the content of the game.

Morrowind has much more armors parts for costumisation, caverns/ancestral tombs, magic, equipment material types, much more weapons, the story is more complex, there is way more misc items, we can use lanterns and stuff as lighting, attributes are more diversed (the fighting between an axe and a blunt weapon isn't the same... yes it's hard work to level attributes, but you feel like you accomplished something, when your character can hit more than he misses.), there is much more ennemy models, if you see someone with a special armor there is a chance you can steal it, you can get Deadric at low levels (I'm level 19 and I have some Deadric parts and weapons....and I have full ebony and can get Orcish), leveled items and NPC are barely present.

Yes the playable race models have detached members and the running animation isn't the best, and there's no physic engine....but the graphics are still pretty good.....And in 2002, Morrowind WAS Skyrim.

And most of all, the game isn't made for casual players... you need to give some to the game.

I'm so sick of the nostalgia argument.

If it's purely nostalgia, then how do you explain all the people who tried Morrowind / Daggerfall after Oblivion / Skyrim and found they liked those games more? Or how do you explain all the people who still play Morrowind on a regular basis today?

Why is it so hard to concede the possibility that maybe, just maybe, the series has declined over time?

If we could only have ...
The action/adventure aspects of Skyrim and ...
The depth of quest lines of Daggerfall and ...
Attributes - but done right where you are not forced to min/max and ...
The latest graphics and animations and ...
Deep companions like FONV and ...
All of the features that have been dropped to the cutting room floor since Daggerfall (yes - in MW they removed climbing and many other things. Still haven't forgiven them for that).

You get the idea. Skyrim definitely adds and does many things better than its predecessors. It also removes, and not in a good way. There is no question that Skyrim railroads you more than any other TES game, and also no doubt that this has been a trend 15 years in the making. The reason is simple, it is easier to develop a game by implementing restrictions - fewer options means fewer interactions means fewer potential unintended consequences (often in the form of bugs). The down side is that there is less creativity allowed to the player.

They all have their advantages. Ask me which I enjoyed most and I would probably tell you Daggerfall, yet I would not want to go back to Daggerfall. What I really want is Skyrim without all of the cuts. Can't have that either.

As far as Oblivion goes, the only area where Oblivion is superior to Skyrim is in the Quest Log. Skyrim has Oblivion beat in every other area.

Yeap. Shutting down oblivion gates < Killing dragons.
Not to mention some certain nice locations you visit in the main quest in skyrim :) all you got in oblivion was the damned imperial city. Not to say it wasnt good, oblivion's main quest was epic enough :)

Frankly, I'd be happy if Skyrim had some depth to its world. If I could explore and actually discover things. Not just useless empty ruins, with some bandits but actually discover something unknown about the world. Something new.

I want to feel like there is an actual world out there. Not just locations for me to kill the same bandits over and over.
