Why is the creation Kit taking so long?

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 7:15 pm

I like how so many here have no intention, whatsoever, of ever using the CK; they're just impatient for other people to get the chance to because they want the mods.

Hah, I almost wish modders would just agree to take a brief vacation, say til after Christmas, before working on anything. See the collective apoplexy you have.

I agree completely. I have every intention of using it...when it is ready. I cannot even count of how many threads I have seen that are requests for mods or idea threads for mods that are not even remotely plausible using the tools that we will be given. If the request thread does not fall into the former than it falls into the category of a simple 10-15 minute fix that cannot be done without access to the CK. Some gamers expect the more talented modders to literally pull these requests out of their ass. I know how difficult it is to mod this game and if some of those who are complaining for a quicker release of the CK and impatiently awaiting some of the more expertly crafted mods actually spent some time learning to use the various tools( it takes more than the CK to make a great mod), or spent that time outlining and defining the concept for the mod they would like to create we could be much more productive.

This whole matter pissed me off quite frankly and to see how unappreciative some forumers are of both Bethesdas and the modding communities hard work simply baffles me.

I have written code for a different game. Java, a couple hundred classes, thousands of lines of code, a full blown extension to the game. Folks ask for updates and I provide them. OTOH I don't do it for a living and the game that I am modding tends to appeal to an older and much smaller crowd. With a mass market game like this it's a fine line between being communicative and hanging yourself with your own words, especially when so many are more comfortable with conspiracy theories than simple facts.

IMHO there is nothing wrong with asking for it. Nothing even wrong with a bit of good natured whining. However, some of the rabid responses cross the line.

Not when the game is only just barely playable for the majority of players.
The majority of players are playing the game just fine, it's a minority that complains about bugs on the forum.

Couldn't be, he says the game he is modding has an older and more mature fan base ( as well as being relatively small). My 8 year old cousin plays Minecraft and the fan base has been described as many things but I do not fell that mature has ever been a word of choice. =)

The wiki said is to be released before 3 December. Not the source but better than complete nothing or just guess.

Whatever wiki it is, that date is probably based on just another rumor. I wouldn't expect it to know anything we don't.

Heh.

So you're saying they implemented a whole new rendering engine (because they sure as hell didn't implement a new game engine, I just compared the C++ class inheritance trees :)), and then somehow opted to include the same visual bugs the old one had (example: water not turning murky until your camera is fully submerged)?

That's ... a funny idea. :)

Yeah the Gamebryo was just used as a renderer for their games, AFAIK. The tech (/ bugs) is mostly their own doings ;) And now they dont use speed tree either. Not sure about the facegen, if it's licensed or if its their own, i think it changed in FO3 but im not sure.

you know, it's not that game studios are bad at communication, it's that gamers are bad at being communicated with.

Over the years, having played any numbers of MMO's and RPG's, one thing remains a constant through both the great games and the fail games: the dismal cesspool of official boards. We've been fairly good in comparison here on the Skyrim boards, I believe because there's actually a decent contingent of intelligent people who make complex mods, and are therefore also intelligent in OTHER areas....(am I talking about...gasp...maturity?).

But if you have been a PC gamer for any amount of time, and have browsed any amount of pre/post release "official boards" you know how quickly and easily and viciously the playerbase can turn on you.

It is for this reason ALONE that studios are very very careful about what they say and when they say it, and more often than not, it's in their best interest to simply keep quiet until they can back up their words with actions: i.e. first rule of Creation Set, is never talk about Creation Set.

It's our own damn fault.

When it comes to game studios being bad at communication or gamers being bad at receiving communication, I don't think it's either/or, I think its a little bit of both. But the argument can be made that lack of communication or vague communication on their end does tend to breed panic on our end more than clear, specific communication.

I don't think its "our own damn fault". I think big companies have gone to great lengths to make us forget we are consumers - customers, and that customers are always right. I'd gladly pay for the Creation Kit. I was glad to pay for Skyrim. It's worth every penny and more.

The PC gaming community can turn on developers quickly. But developers, or their publishers rather, can turn on their customer base equally as quickly. Just ask any PC Call of Duty fan out there how deep that knife in the back stung when Activision destroyed the PC modding community by ceasing to release Mod tools for games starting with MW2.

The trend today is for big corps to dictate to customers what they want and then, after the sale has been made, to tell customers to piss off.

I think Bethesda Game Studios and Zenimax are infinitely friendlier to the PC community than that, but nonetheless, with evil giants like Microsoft dictating their actions more and more, as a gaming community it requires constant vigilance. If that means we overreact at times, so be it.

Hooray, now I know it's anytime between a week from now and eternity. But I still have absolutely no idea why and hence no idea how to make even the most remote estimate to how long.

I am dying for the CK to be released (I'm seriously delaying taking vacation days until after it comes out!), but I would much rather they take time to test it well, than have them put out some buggy mess of a tool. How many patches did they release for the CK for Oblivion? One or two total?

That's because they might not know, and God forbid they should set a date and miss it. The pitchfork wielding rabble will storm the castle walls.

To be honest, I feel a little unenthusiastic about Skyrim mod since Bethesda's goal is to make Skyrim to look the same on all platforms and they decided to use an upgraded old engine instead of new one.
I don't quite care about the CK now.
I will just play the vanilla Skyrim and put it on the shelf, then look forward to TES 6.

Wishing ill of other people who did nothing to you is, you know.... :/ As if not being skilled with the CK was a fault?
You know, it's people who can't use the CK who make the audience for modders.

Anyway, if modders actually don't get to work with the CK, then I'd learn to use it myself. Perhaps I won't be able to make the masterpieces some modders can make, but with due time I suppose I could get something done.

Still, I'm starting to worry they're releasing the CK after Christmas. Darn it, Bethesda, give us a date...
