Why is the creation Kit taking so long?

Didn′t they use it to make the game anyway? So, basically it should be finished already, isn′t it?

Well, they used it to make the game but what they used and what they give away may be two different things. I'm sure they don't want to have to deal with bug fixing both Vanilla Skyrim and the Creation Kit. I think it's worth waiting for.

The version they use includes software they can't redistribute, they have to remove all that stuff before we get it.

Also there is a game patch coming soon, it makes sense to wait for that before releasing.

It is my understanding that we get a modified version of their Creation Kit, one that we can use, and has features/functions removed that are not for non-developers. I would imagine that it would take awhile to get the modifications done.

Not quite.

The Dev's version:
Can access the code of the game to change stuff thats hard coded. In theory, could be used to directly access the source code.
Has third partys tools for modelling/textures. Bethesda is licensed to only have them for their use, they can't distribute them, so they have to be removed.
Probably isn't in an easy to use package (ie, one icon to click and start with a few additional library files.
It probably also isn't streamlined in its operation. It does need to be usable by people with no coding experience

All those things do have to be addressed before it can be released.

I'm guessing that the biggest reason is them not focusing on it. They need the team for patches, hence the CS (a completely optional tool beneficial to a small percentage of users) isn't top priority.

That's not it, they have two teams working on different things right now. One is trying to fix the bugs and release patches and the other one is working on the CK.

I'd imagine that since this is the first time they've used the shiny new game engine, the CK is probably new as well, and being new, there are probably quite a few kinks to work out as far as making it non-dev ready goes.

"shiny new engine"? - not really true, its just a modified version of the old construction set (not saying that it is not heavily modified)

I was under the impression that Bethesda dumped the Gamebryo engine in favor of a completely new one. Is this not the case?

Uhm, its just monday. Week after Thanksgiving isn't exactly any particular day this week.

BGS is a huge team. Division into 2 groups seems likely.

@Muse - that is speculation based on what has been observed in the game..

I'll tell you what it is. For the last 6 months leading up to release the entire team of nearly 100 was working 60-100 hr weeks. They hadn't had a vacation in 2011 so it's likely that upon release most everyone was given 2 weeks vacation and honestly, it was well deserved. They are probably just now getting back to it, so show some heart and humility for those hard working people that poured everything they had for so long into this game. They are only human and need time to rest so that means it's going to be a bit still before we get the tools. Be patient, they will come and in the meantime we can all get very intimate with the vanilla game. It's not like there isn't more content to enjoy than ever before so let us have at it.

Until such time as the weary at Beth have recovered and returned to give us the greatest gift of all, I think we should be grateful for what we have, the greatest game hour per dollar ratio on the planet.

This is not the case, no. It's just a heavily modified Gamebryo that they felt was good enough to warrant a new name

I was hearing that it was new before it was released,

*EDIT* In any case, my point was that due to the changes in the game engine, it would take a bit longer to resolve any compatibility, licensing, and/or ease-of-use-for-non-coders issues.

It's kind of true but not re-using any parts of the old engine would be pretty stupid. So its not completely new maybe like 40%-50% new engine.

I agree with your other arguments, but not this one. Most of their content designers using the CK, like landscapers, have very little coding experience and want an easy to use CK as well.

The delay is indeed caused by limiting certain features, removing features that contain proprietary code to prevent legal problems, and the fact that they have a game to patch for 3 different platforms, so they can't devote too many people to the CK.

The word 'GameBryo' describes the rendering engine, the back-end scripting and whole data file system has never been Gamebryo. They made a new rendering engine, so nothing in the game is now using GameBryo, so now it's in effect all their own custom engine.

But most of what we'd work with in the CK isn't new.

Pete Hines, community manager of Bethesda games has said he doesn’t know if the latest patch will fix all the reported bugs, saying “We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don’t know if it will fix -your- bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”, he is also unsure of when the patch will be released. The creation kit to allow custom content and the bug fixes are both being worked on at the same time.
