I created this thread with very low expectations of it getting passed two pages, let alone getting noticed for multiple days, so I am rather pleased at the progress this discussion has made, and I just wanted to give feedback on my opinion on some of the points raised from the community here.
I must say, you all make some really strong and good points. The game shouldn't be rushed into one go like I've been doing. I still haven't made any progress since my first post, as I'm taking a break, I'm worried I might end up rushing a few more things, which I definitely don't want to do.
Some key things I wanna point out that stood out to me amongst your posts:
1) It's the journey, not the destination. There are so many secrets, easter eggs, details, possible random encounters, etc. that are present in this game and most won't be experienced / noticed if you rush the game. Fast Travel just so happens to go along with this. Before Skyrim came out, I made a decision that I would NOT use Fast Travel, but I just couldn't help myself. It is incredibly cheap, and in my opinion I wish it was never in the game, I wish players were forced to either use horses or walk, the fact it's an option in the game will make players feel pushed into using it. Yes I know because it's an option you don't HAVE to use it, however, why would I want to walk across all of Skyrim to collect X items and then go all of the way back to Y town to turn them in for the quest, when I could simply get this annoying quest over with within five minutes, especially if it's a Radiant Quest? I will make an ATTEMPT to start playing without fast travel, at least on some of my characters, so I can really try to take in the details and such. Though, when ever I do make the journey, the same thing seems to happen: Walk -> Random Event -> Continue Walking -> Dragon Encounter -> Continue Walking -> Random Event -> Interesting non-random event occurs -> Repeat until at destination.
2) Making the optimum class is boring! It's more interesting to create a character who is, as several people have said in this thread earlier, a jack-of-all-trades character, or at the very least a mix of the skills. For example, maybe a Spellblade / Battlemage / Shaman, instead of the straight up Pure builds that I've been using. Besides, it's not uncommon to see, in a guild, a few people who aren't the race / class that best fits that style of play ( right now I'm thinking of a Nord / Orc in the Thieves Guild, or a High Elf in the Companions ).
3) Change your perspective in the game. Try to look at the game from your character's perspective, instead of the gamers perspective, ignore that you have available cheating resources like the wiki and various gaming guides. Take things slower and don't look at the guild quests and main questline as the only things to do in the game, the other side quests are really worth doing for fun. There's all sorts of interesting stories and untold lore just waiting for you, if you'd just stop, smell the roses, and look around.
Thanks everyone for your posting, please continue to discuss if you differ with some of the things I / other have said, if you can think of more things to do to help the burnt out gamer that's losing interest, please post them.
