Why is the fun of this game slowly fading away?

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:51 pm

Nope. I made a character that went all the way to 40, and the only things I had beat were the main quest, thieves guild, and companions. I hadnt even touched the dark brotherhood, mages guild, deadric quests, or the civil war, and I only did a few side quests. I started over because I wanted to build a perfect character(in the other one, I had just put perks in random places to try out every thing.

Im now a 13 in my new one, the only thing Ive hone is finished the civil war, and joined the thieves guild, and Im clamoring for more, I dont get to play as much as Id like to. This game all ready has a crapload of stuff in it. When all the patches, and all the dlc come out, it will be even more amazing.

I agree completely man. As Kevin van Ord noted in his video review, Skryim almost overwhelms the player with a dizzying number of quests to perform and things to do. BTW, although your avatar looks cool, I absolutely hated 'V for Vendetta'. ;)

you're expecting the game to go a certain way, that's why. drop those expectations. play it as though it were completely new. it's only our expectations that cause disappointment, not reality.

I don't see how anyone finishes the MQ. My warrior is level 37 and I haven't even talked to the freaking greybeards lol. Everyday I turn the game on and say "today I see the greybeards" then a random side quest is thrown at me or I see a cave I haven't explored and poof 4 hours later I still haven't been to the greybeards lol.

I've made three characters, got to around level 25 on all of them. One is a Thief / Assassin, the next is a Pure Mage, and the last is a heavy armored Warrior with a two-hander. The Thief / assassin completed the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild, the Pure Mage completed the College of Winterhold, and the Pure Warrior completed The Companions. I haven't even touched the main questline yet on any of those characters, and I lack the motivation to do so. Mainly because i have a strong suspicion that once I complete the main quest on a character, I'll feel satisfied with the game and will stop playing it entirely, due to me already using all of the available types of combat, except for one handed + shield, everything else has been used. Anyone beginning to feel the same way?

Boo there's alot more than that for combat types. There's archery and conjured stuff for 2 examples. Plenty of other varied builds that can be done. Thinking outside the box can add alot to the longevity of things

I hear you man. For the first 30-40 hours of the game I didn't pay the main quest much mind at all. Still in all though I found the MQ ending quite satisfying. :)

Nope. I see beyond the mechanics they expect us (i.e. casual/average gamers) to follow, and make the game my own (role playing, etc), so like the previous entries, I can play this for months (like an MMO).

That's why I prefer to finish the main quest after completing +150 quests...

So then I can feel that there is much more to do.

The quest lines in this game are so much shorter than in Oblivion, and there isn't nearly enough choice and consequence in the game. It all feels very linear to me, and un-RPG-like.

I'm keep rerolling also. I think its the lack of classes and the gutted spell system. I just can't find satisfaction in my characters. It seems like the game is shoving a jack of all trades character down my throat.

LOL, I played a 1h sword imperial with a madeup backstory of an agent from cyrodil, sent to help deal with skyrim by what ever means is neccessary. I did not need to use a shield and basically gladiatored my way through the war. it was awesome. But unfortunately, while checking in on a town that was being invaded by vampires... i was taken. now, I must learn to live a much more private, and dark life...

it all depends on how much you go into it.

When I start thinking of fast traveling somewhere, I know I've had enough and it's time to go to sleep.

Thats exactly what I do. Once you start taking shortcuts and rush through content all the fun defently fades away.

stop using Fast Travel. You're game has just recieve about 30-40 more hours of Gameplay.

I like watching random fights between wolves/guards, or Fire Atronachs and Giants, or Bears/Townsfolk.
Love seeing Giants fighting Guards...I jump in.

TO be honest, I have one character doing everything atm...its hard...but The reason being is..I want to max out one character and try out all the different aspects...see what I'm comfy with...then I'm going to be hitting another character.

My favorite thing to do ATM is...stash EVERYTHING at home you normally wear/comfy with, except stuff that doesn't weigh anything. I'm talking only wearing regular clothes, lock picks, some potions, and just...GO find more stuff and use it.

From Iron Daggers to Steel War Axes, to Long Bows, and arrows...just use what ever you find. Hit a bandit spot, when you kill some one you take their style of gameplay (Bow/Arrow, Dual Wielding Forsworn, if you killed a Magic User, if you have his spells use them instead to kill the next target). Grab a Merc if you are a higher level and don't think your other styles work.

Really MAKE a jack of all trades character instead of this [censored] cookie cutter thing people are making. (IM A DARK BROTHER HOOD ASSASSIN!) So am I, but I use heavy Armor, and I sneak with two-handed axes...lmao

This. While I mainly focus on stealth skills, I also through smithing, enchanting, one handed, and all the schools of magic in the pot as well. That makes for one sneaky, but well rounded, magnificent bastard of a character.

If the fun is fading, you're probably been playing the game non stop since release.

Do yourself a favor and take a break. If you thrash anything too much, of course it gets old, that's normal...

Also roleplaying and creating a story for your character GREATLY increases the games life.

I created this thread with very low expectations of it getting passed two pages, let alone getting noticed for multiple days, so I am rather pleased at the progress this discussion has made, and I just wanted to give feedback on my opinion on some of the points raised from the community here.

I must say, you all make some really strong and good points. The game shouldn't be rushed into one go like I've been doing. I still haven't made any progress since my first post, as I'm taking a break, I'm worried I might end up rushing a few more things, which I definitely don't want to do.

Some key things I wanna point out that stood out to me amongst your posts:

1) It's the journey, not the destination. There are so many secrets, easter eggs, details, possible random encounters, etc. that are present in this game and most won't be experienced / noticed if you rush the game. Fast Travel just so happens to go along with this. Before Skyrim came out, I made a decision that I would NOT use Fast Travel, but I just couldn't help myself. It is incredibly cheap, and in my opinion I wish it was never in the game, I wish players were forced to either use horses or walk, the fact it's an option in the game will make players feel pushed into using it. Yes I know because it's an option you don't HAVE to use it, however, why would I want to walk across all of Skyrim to collect X items and then go all of the way back to Y town to turn them in for the quest, when I could simply get this annoying quest over with within five minutes, especially if it's a Radiant Quest? I will make an ATTEMPT to start playing without fast travel, at least on some of my characters, so I can really try to take in the details and such. Though, when ever I do make the journey, the same thing seems to happen: Walk -> Random Event -> Continue Walking -> Dragon Encounter -> Continue Walking -> Random Event -> Interesting non-random event occurs -> Repeat until at destination.

2) Making the optimum class is boring! It's more interesting to create a character who is, as several people have said in this thread earlier, a jack-of-all-trades character, or at the very least a mix of the skills. For example, maybe a Spellblade / Battlemage / Shaman, instead of the straight up Pure builds that I've been using. Besides, it's not uncommon to see, in a guild, a few people who aren't the race / class that best fits that style of play ( right now I'm thinking of a Nord / Orc in the Thieves Guild, or a High Elf in the Companions ).

3) Change your perspective in the game. Try to look at the game from your character's perspective, instead of the gamers perspective, ignore that you have available cheating resources like the wiki and various gaming guides. Take things slower and don't look at the guild quests and main questline as the only things to do in the game, the other side quests are really worth doing for fun. There's all sorts of interesting stories and untold lore just waiting for you, if you'd just stop, smell the roses, and look around.

Thanks everyone for your posting, please continue to discuss if you differ with some of the things I / other have said, if you can think of more things to do to help the burnt out gamer that's losing interest, please post them.

after i regretfully finished the main quest i have stopped playing skyrim altogether. mainly because all those "repeatable" quests are beyond boring and monotonous.

There is a very simple solution to your problem and it’s been mentioned over 20 times in this topic so far so I’ll be the 21st! ? Stop using fast travel. You would be surprised what happens in the wilds of Skyrim when your half way to Windhelm. Some of the funniest things I’ve seen in this game happen when I’m just wandering around. Here is something that might help you, next time you play devote at least an hour to walking around, you don’t necessarily have to go into any dungeons or walk to a certain point just exist in the world and see what happens. Or, I that doesn’t work take a break all together.

As for me, I have two characters, one I’ve completed the game with who is a level 40 with over 90 hours of play and a Nord who I will never complete the main quest with. I hope that Skyrim fire gets re-lit inside of you good sir.

Skyrim is more like a football game than an RPG.
RPGs have the potential to keep you playing non-stop for months/years.

Everyone is different.

But for me, I don't get how one stops having as much fun with it as they get older. I have college, work and a girlfriend, not to mention friends and parties, and still find the time and pleasure to play videogames.

It is also very hard for me to get burnt out on an Elder Scrolls game.

@Romer318

+1 I always walk in skyrim. In oblivion, I did it to roleplay, but in skyrim, I do it because I want to. The stuff I come across just wandering around is immense.

I have 68 hours on my battlemage and I'm starting to feel bored too...

I fast travel when the area between my start/end points has already been explored. While it may work for some people, NOT fast traveling won't make the game more exciting for me... After collecting my 13,317,506th "Blue Mountain Flower", I'm getting fatigued.

The randomized encounters and situations, while better than other games, are still formulaic. After a certain point, it's just mixing and matching things you've already seen. "Oh look, I've never seen a bear and a sabretooth team up on a giant like this before..." But it's not something to get excited about.

The main problem is this:

1. Get a quest;
2. Clear out a dungeon and fetch the item to bring back.

All RPGs suffer from quest fatigue, and understandably so. Developers can't spend $800 million and 20+ years developing a game to make every thing completely unique. Though the dialogue and characters change, the gameplay does not. I'm at the point where I may want to finish the main storyline simply because new plot events are the only thing that could hold my interest now. Or perhaps I should play Batman: Arkham City for awhile and come back to Skyrim next year.

But as a disclaimer, you should also understand that I get bored pretty quick; 68 hours in one game is not common for me. I've only finished about 1/5th of the games I own because of this.
