Worst Full Price Game Purchase

Post » Fri Jul 15, 2011 10:39 pm

So let's hear it.

What was the worst game you've ever paid full price for?
Did you do any research before you bought it?
Why did you decide to get it?
How long into the playing did you regret making that purchase?
Did you managed to convince a retail clerk to take it back?

Here's mine:

Lords of the Realm 3
No, I didn't research it.
I loved Lords of the Realm 2.
15 minutes.
Still collecting dust on my shelf.

Borderlands. People said it was great. Calling it [censored] would be an understatement.
Mass effect 2, I expected an rpg.
Fable 2, I expected an improved fable 1.
Fable 3, I expected it couldnt be worse than 2.
Bioshock 2, it was just bad.

I should do more research, instead of trusting devs with sequals.

Yeah, a sequel has a lot of potential to disappoint since most people buying one have played the original and have a preconceived idea of what the game should be.

Force Unleashed 2. I was expecting a game, not a 15 minute polished demo. Took it back and got New Vegas.

Dragon Age: Origins

asked people about it,

my main question was replay value

I was told it had a lot. sadly I wished I did more research, because there was virtually no replay value at all.

I'd have to say Brink. At first, I really liked it, but it got redundant and would of been better as an XBLA or PSN title.

That would have to be Aliens vs Predator, the new one

Not quite that bad, but definetly "Steam sales" material.

Chrono Cross. Yes, I read the reviews for it, how it got 10/10 at GameSpot and all that jazz. Pretty much all anyone said at the time was how it was the sequel to the classic Chrono Trigger, how awesome the graphics and music was, and how it had such a deep story. No one mentioned how craptacular combat was, how stupidly easy the game was set, or how the story was really a pretentious piece of crap with more holes than a wedge of Swiss cheese that made no sense whatsoever.

For me, it was Call to Power 2. Back then I was able to return it, then I bought it for $10 later. Now with the Apylton Patch, I think it's one of the best games out there for a Civ type game. Way better than that PoS Civ V. I didn't do research on it, because I liked the first one.

NOw I do my research before I buy a game now. The only other game that will not be a wait and see buy is going to be Skyrim and Fallout 4 if they are making it.

Red Faction 2. I loved the first one, played through it at least five times, and bought the sequel the day it came out. The entire mechanics of the game were completely changed and it bore no resemblance to the original in any way apart from the name. It's not a terrible game, just a huge disappointment compared to the first.

I can't think of any others offhand; I rarely buy games at full price.

Borderlands was okay. but was hugely disapointing to me. first of all, its not really an rpg just because you add arbitrary leveling up. second, the big selling point was that there will millions of different weapons, turned out they all looked the same with slight veriations of what damage and effects they had. also what is the point of having so many weapons when how the game works is that you are picking up a slightly better one every five minutes. they should have just had a weapon for every weapon skill, which got better and had a effect tree. OH, and Borderlands was literally a linear game, as in there aren't any notaciable forks in your path, the side quests are just fetch quests sending you back to where you have already been

thats my rant on borderlands.

I paid full price for Borderlands and I didn't regret it, but it was mainly due to the fact that I had people to play co-op with, which is much more fun.

I do regret purchasing New Vegas at full price, especially considering I also got the collectors edition. I would have preferred to purchase it at a later date, after I had found out it wasn't the kind of game I was expecting. That way I could avoid the disappointment that came with buying it on the release date with only pre-release details to go on.

Fallout 3

I read the forums
Read the reviews

Everything that was said about the game indicated that it was a great game that improved vastly upon Oblivion's mechanics and that it had a great story.

Not the case

What I found was an incredibly imbalanced game, with a terrible story, and terrible 2 dimensional characters that had a few lines of personality and that was it. The Pitt, however, was a great DLC and I wish that they had made the whole game more akin to that.

I've since sold the game and have felt pretty good about at least getting some of my money back.

Edit: I sold the DLC and traded the Collectors edition on switch games for DA:O which IMO was a great trade.

Black Ops. I knew it was going to look like WAW but I still bought it...

LA Noire is another big one. I definitely should've rented it. There was no replay value..

Modern Warfare 2: After Call of Duty 4 my hopes were high enough to pay the extra $10 for the hardened edition of the sequel. Biggest. Mistake. Ever.

Spore, and this was above full price as I bought the Galactic edition, it cost me around $80. It still stings. I didn't want the Galactic edition I was just being impatient.

GTA IV.

So disappointing.

Good thing I still had Saints Row 1. That satisfied my need to BURN EVERYTHING.

To this day I still don't understand why people don't like GTA IV, sure it may be different but I still had loads of fun and the freeroam multiplayer made for great times. But I guess that's just your opinion and I have to respect it.

Anyway, I guess there's a lot of games like LA Noire (worth $40 at max), Mortal Kombat ($30), and Halo: Reach I just found boring except for those rare times when I get an itch for mindless shooting.

Fable. I can't tell you how excited I was to play it as it'd been hyped as the pinnacle of "moral choice" games. Beat it in 4 hours. This is after completing every little sidequest too. I can only assume the sequels svck equally bad and refuse to go near them.
