You can become vampire lord? Hey, what is the catch? YEAH TH

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 9:29 am

Well I appreciate the fact you decided to stop and chat with us Vsions. Last time you ditched us :stare: .

I have no recollection of such an event :bolt:

I hope you didn't take offense to my on-going http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1400513-an-idea-of-how-vampires-and-werewolves-could-have-been-done-thread-5/ about improving Vampires and Lycanthropes. I know that I used some semi-insulting phrases regarding design choices and stuff like that in the opening paragraph, but overall I've had a blast as a werewolf (and I do look forward to trying out the vampires once Dawnguard arrives on the PS3), but it wasn't intended to call you guys out as lazy or anything like that. It was simply a list of things I thought that could be done to give Skyrim players a lot more variety (and fun) when playing as supernatural creatures. I know that the outline I created is probably unrealistic, due to a wide array of factors, such as deadlines and the fact you'd have to create two new "Vampire Race" codes for characters and designate them to be at certain areas of the game world (eg: Volikhar being limited to the Pale, Winterhold, and Eastmarch Holds), and implementing and ensuring that the feeding mechanics worked differently for two vampire strains than it did for another, which sounds like it could be a nightmare, but it seemed to be a way of not only implementing new ideas into the TES series, but also celebrating the lore that's come before. It wasn't meant as a "Boo! I hate you all!" but as a "In a perfect world, here's how I'd envision these mechanics working in Skyrim, and I hope they get closer to this vision."

I understand that it's difficult to juggle what a huge range of fans want, which is part of why my thread is so long, but I think there are ways to keep everyone happy. I, like many others, do want to be forced to transform under a full moon. I've accepted that we can't in Skyrim because the Companions are a modified strain of Lycanthropy, but with the inclusion of wild werewolf encounters, it seems an opportunity was missed to allow those that wanted Lycanthropy to feel like more of a mixed blessing or a downright curse to return to the ways of forced transformations. The Ring of Hircine could still be used by those who wanted to be spared the forced transformations, or they could just join the Companions. That's not to say I want the beast form power removed either. I want both, because then it isn't a matter of that form only being good once or twice a month. It can always be a good power boost or, but once or twice a month, it becomes a liability to the afflicted, since they wouldn't have control over their transformation.

The same goes for vampires and NPC hostility. I understand that some people must have been very vocal about how much they hated vampire debuffs, because they've been toned down substantially in Dawnguard, especially NPC hostility, which to me was the big kicker. Removing NPC hostility at Stage 4 removed any incentive one had to feed, which was weird because you guys made it easier than ever to feed regularly. The lack of aggression became all the more confusing with the glowing eyes, because they just screamed "I'm not normal!" to everyone who looked at them. On a strain of vampires like the Volkihar from "Immortal Blood," that don't socialize and can't blend in, glowing eyes would make a lot of sense and be really creepy and off-putting, but on this new strain it just seems like it'll be weird to play a vampire character, walking among humans, in the midst of vampires attacking towns, and nobody will raise an eyebrow at my glowing eyes.

I don't have a perfect solution. I don't know how hard it is to create a new race in the code, create models for it, and give them their set abilities and whatnot. I think it sounds very hard, but then again, I know next to nothing about this stuff, so it all sounds very hard to me. But it seems to me that the challenge of pleasing one group without upsetting the other comes from there being only one path to choose from. You're either a vampire, or you're not. You're either a werewolf, or you're not. There's no variety to choose from, meaning that someone's always going to be left out in the cold.

I think there are some great ideas, and you have some valid points as well in your post. But keep this in mind. This is a game about the Dragonborn and all that that entails. In order to develop all of the ideas you have and the different strains, This would be a completely different game mainly about vamps and WW when in actuality that is meant to be more of an addition to the world and not its main feature.

Aye. Maybe it could be patched in if Beth get the time to do so, after addressing some other more pressing matters (making the DLC available to all for example). Even if we don't get this for this iteration of TES, the fact that vsions has responded in this thread shows that this issue is one Beth will bear in mind in future, silver lining to every cloud and all that.

I personally would prefer to see an option to disable killcams > an option to remain in 1st person POV for WW/VL transformations. I'd also like to be able to get mah Alchemy lab in Breezehome, please. The rest of the house is fully upgraded, so seeing that dusty corner irritates me lol.

But yeah, there are a lot more pressing matters that need to be taken care of, mainly things like getting the 1.7 patch and Dawnguard to all platforms and fixing quest bugs that still exist.

I have never - ever - ever seen a modding community add a first person view for the Werewolf, have you?
Then I say you will never see it, not for Vampire Lord either.

Want to know why? Because, it's not viable. The modders who've attempted to make first person possible for Werewolf Form and succeeded, quickly realized it wasn't viable, it just got their asses killed, repeatedly. They moved so fast when sprinting that they had a hard time orienting on anything, and whenever something came around to their side or back, they didn't see it and got butt [censored]. That was when Werewolves were alot squishier though.

I detest third-person in Skyrim. But I'm perfectly fine with looking at my VL flapping his way across the world and power-biting the various juice-bags that populate said world. I don't care about looking at some guy in armor swinging a sword, but when I'm a monster? That's when I want to see my bad self doing monster-type stuff.

Once again, we've got folks who disagree with certain design decisions and they hop on the "That Was Lazy Design!" bandwagon. That's cute how people do that, turn their opinions into attacks.

My personal preference is first-person view. I don't buy third-person pov games because I don't like that kind of gameplay. I was very happy when I first learned that Bethesda made games for first-person players but that seems to be changing and it could be that I won't be playing their games if it changes much more...makes me sad and it's not fun. RPG/roles/FPpov, it all goes together for the experience I'm looking for.

Werewolf your dead...
Actually, come to think of it, I never made a rude comment to Vsions. It was about either Todd or Pete Hines :P.

I hate third person with a passion but bethesda did a good job with the vampire lord that I dont mind it at all really.
Though the spell casting on the vampire lord is alittle tricky.

vsions, is there any chance that the next patch or future DLC would contain a option for us who want to play first person view only?

There is just something that ruin the experience when you get a "out of your body" experience when you are trying to roleplay in Skyrim.

I am somebody, but when I am svcked to the third person view, I am not somebody - I am now looking at somebody, get it?
I'm sure alot of people won't get it and I will get all the hate in the world but it's such a big bummer when you can't play in your own style thru the entire game.

Unlikely, that would be a very risky thing to add at this point, besides that decision is above my paygrade :(

I wish 1st person could have made it in but I am not exaggerating when I say its a huge task.

I'm curious why exactly is it so hard to implement 1st person view?

There has been a debate with the vampire fans in the forums claiming the vampires in Dawnguard who inhabit Castle Volkihar, are indeed, the Volkihar. Others say that they killed the "previous owners" and named themselves the Volkihar, since they do not do the ice-reaching ability. So, are they the Volkihar? And the whole Movarth Piquine thing is a minor issue we've been debating here and there.

Would you be able to elaborate on this, or are you even allowed to? I'm not sure how the developer/fan relationship works. Thanks in advance! You seem like the major vampire fan around here.

Yeah, it'd be nice to be able to put an end to that, though I'm still holding out for the idea that Castle Volkihar is where the original Volkihar started out, but had to flee because they couldn't blend in. It's not even where Immortal Blood says they're most prominent (Western part of Skyrim rather than in the east). It'd also be nice to know how much of Immortal Blood (if any) remains factual, so we know what to expect (or not expect) if/when we get to Valenwood.

I understand that, but I hope you keep these things in mind for the next game (or possibly expand on them in future DLC). Dawnguard is likely going to be the only Vampire centric DLC we'll see in Skyrim, or possibly even this series overall, and it'd be a shame if things never progressed and became more advanced because it didn't fit hand in hand with the main storyline. I spend a majority of my time in any RPG with a lot of content avoiding the main story in favor of sidequests, minigames, training, exploring, whatever else I can do, so the more content that I can do that has little to nothing to do with the main quest, the happier I am. The main course of a meal is often what people look forward to, but I'm more about the side dishes.

Also, since the whole Dragonborn thing is the main feature/focus of this game, could we possibly get a Thu'um skill tree in the next DLC? Not sure if you're the one to talk to about that, but it'd be nice to see Shouts actually be viable as a standalone combat model, rather than a power you can use once or twice in a battle.

It would seem that the sole qualification for being a master dev is the ability to hold a controller the right way up :P

I'm not saying devs are flawless demigods, but the root cause of most problems people have with the game IMO originate from uber tight deadlines. Its just one of those things though *shrug*

You can zoom the camera in and out on both the vampire lord and werewolf both very very close and very far if you want.

True, but it never seems to get the right/same angle as in human form. Then again, I play a lot in first person too, so I probably notice the angle and distance changes more, going in and out constantly.

Try to understand that skyrim as a whole has far more to it in every way than any of our previous other games. By that I mean everything from tech to polish to things you can do. Im not saying that all of those categories are bigger than that same category in another of our titles, Im saying as a whole far more went into skyrim. Since we are a limited number of people we can only address certain things. The werewolf and VL would not have made it in at all if 1st person had to be put in as well as it would have not been feasible within the time we had. As it is there were thing I wish we had had more time for with both of those forms to make them better. A good example of that would have been selectable howls. Its alot more difficult to do these things than people think. When fans, whos opinions I value deeply, attribute it to laziness, it bothers me. A number of us have worked alot of late nights away from our families to bring you guys this stuff. We know its not perfect and we love constructive feedback but calling us lazy or saying that we are trying to screw the very fans who make us great, well that just stings, know what I mean?

I dont disagree. There are things I would like to have been different as well. But take your change form at will example. Who do you appease one group without upsetting another? there are alot of people that want forced lunar transformations. Then there are some individuals such as yourself that want to be able to change at will. So we try to find a middle ground as best we can. We also provided the vampire lord form as a beast form that can change at will. I hope that relates some of the things we have to think about

I know I'm late to this party, but I do have a response to this.
The PS3 community bought Skyrim based on lies.
Both Fallout titles were broken for the PS3 and they were left that way. I can find quotes from other forums where PS3 users that not only spent money on the base game, but also the DLC, were asking if there will be any more fixes because their games are in an uplayable state due to lags, freezes, and FPS issues. The response they received from gstaff was something like "all of our programmers have moved on to other projects, so there will be no more patches." The Fallout titles were left broken and paying customers were left with games that they either couldn't play, or get anywhere near the money they spent in trade in value. The confidence PS3 users had in Bethesda went down a great deal.

Then, we heard about Skyrim. We were intrigued, but still stinging from our experiences with past Bethesda titles. Pete Hines came out and said the PS3 was getting special attention complete with a new engine, quicker bug fixes, and that it would be on a level of parity with other consoles. We found out, however, that the reality of the situation and the state of the game was much different. We found that Bethesda knew that Skyrim was no different than other titles including all of the broken quests, bugs, glitches, FPS issues, lags, and freezes. We found out that Bethesda "forgot" to send review sites a PS3 version of the game along with the PC and 360 version, the idea being they didn't want anyone to know about the problems until they had already bought the game. We were misled, and bought the games under false pretenses due to fraudulent advertisemant.

Now, PS3 users are watching the other consoles get the DLC and attention we were promised and thought we were getting, all the while, our base game still has issues.
We are also worried that Skyrim will become just another game on our shelves collecting dust because it was left in a broken state by Bethesda.
Over the years PS3 users have spent hundreds of dollars on defective Bethesda products, and have not received even the smallest of apologies. Instead, we get an ad for a flashy new game, complete with a full side order of lies.

Now do you see why PS3 users are so angry? Now do you see why we really don't care if you being called lazy stings. What do we have in past, and current situations that proves anything to the contrary? Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and now it seems Skyrim were money down the drain for PS3 users bought from a company that seems not to care that their products are defective and have been for years. A company that leaves their products defective without even a whisper of an apology or any form of compensation.

That's because first-person with the werewolf is completely impractical.

Vampire lords on the other hand would work well with first-person; I get the feeling that they're trying too hard to show off with the new models and all without considering that not everyone actually likes third-person.

Edit; and on a side note Bethesda, have you considered seeking out 4J studios again? Oblivion was stable on the PS3 wasn't it?

Not impractical. Both Daggerfall and Bloodmoon had first-person werewolves, and there's not really anything I can see with Skyrim that would be a problem with doing them.

The biggest issue with implementing them, as far as I can see, is the lack of first-person animations. Animations are pretty hard to do well, and they can be time-consuming to make. It was extra development and testing time Bethesda couldn't afford, and it's why you don't often see mods adding them (those that do usually make them short and simple).

This is a bit nitpicky, isn't it? The vampire lord is great, and very viable in combat.

Not at all. I hate playing in third person. I never used it before dawnguard. So being forced to use it to use my new vampire abilities is highly annoying. Hell its one of the main reasons I never stay as a werewolf in skyrim, because there was no upside for me.
