You Got To Be Kidding Me

It's ironic that you're calling them ignorant. You know, I've played all of TES games, and I still think Skyrim is the best. Am I ignorant because I like modern RPGs better than "Classic" RPGs? Oh yeah, your opinion is factual because you like the originals better. :shakehead:

The people who give out the awards are paid to actually know what an RPG is. They obviously don't have a clue to what an RPG is.

If you think Skyrim is the best TES RPG fine, that is your opinion. Don't expect me to agree with it and don't expect me to stop expressing my frustration of continuing to crap from a company that has made quality RPG's in the past and could continue to do so if they had the right people in place.

It's quite fine that you don't like the game, that you have lost confidence in Bethesda and that you have a different definition of what an RPG is than many here... It is not however ok to call those who do not agree with you ignorant. Please refrain from generalizing in a flaming manner in the future.

It's a very poor example of what an RPG is, especially when compared to Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Curious.

RPG is not an easily defined genre. For some, Final Fantasy VII will always be more of an RPG than Daggerfall or Morrowind could ever hope of being. That's not my view, but I'm not going to try and deny the legitimacy of JRPGs as RPGs. That would be silly.

It's a shell of what used to be. Daggerfall and Morrowind are better.
From what I've heard Daggerfall didn't have a class system, just like Skyrim.

I can't believe people think it is ok for Skyrim to get a award for outstanding STORY.I am all for people to like or dislike Skyrim but to have the nerve to say it deserved this award is like saying the american financial sector is not corrupt.

How is the American financial sector "corrupt"? I'm curious to know how a New Zealander has become such an expert and moral judge of another country's financial system.

And Skyrim's story is awesome. The return of Alduin alone is a great story. Add in the Civil War storyline and you have TWO stories, each of which is good enough to be the main story for a game.

Potentially good stories, told and executed poorly.

There are many narratives that take place simultaneously in Skyrim, and I haven't found one that wasn't interesting in some way.

The Wolf Queen
A certain Vampire...
Psyjics...
The Blades
Nocturnal
Hircine
And many others.

I have just learned to accept the fact that many people on this forum are simply incapable of judging Skyrim for Skyrim... which is what this award does.

Now then... who wants to guess how many more posts this gets before it gets locked?

I never played any of the final fantasy games so I can't say whether they are RPG's or not. I DID play Skyrim and Oblivion and Morrowind and Daggerfall. I think I've played enough TES to know what is and what isn't a TES RPG, at least to me.

Why?

Removal of classes, attributes and birthsigns. The continuation of the GPS compass. The poor story line. The poor guilds. I could list more but I'm really tired of people asking why when the reasons have been posted so many times on the forums that even those who hate RPG's should know them.

Oh yeah. Forgot about the whole Potema quest. That was very well done.

I still have a sneaking suspicion that most of the "Skyrim is a poor RPG" complaints are because of the removal of Attributes...

HOLY [censored], CAN I CALL 'EM, OR CAN I NOT?

Exactly what I was expecting - the same tired old arguments. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE CLASSES OR ATTRIBUTES TO BE AN RPG.

Do you even know what the letters RPG stand for? Of course you do - they mean "Role Playing Game." Skyrim is a Role Playing Game because it's a game where you can play a role - and the presence or absence of attributes and classes is utterly irrelevant. Classes and Attributes are common mechanics that many RPGs use, but their absence does not mean the game isn't an RPG, and it's absurd to insist otherwise. Role-playing game - it's what RPG means.

And you can create your own class in this game, but you aren't stuck with it in any way as you progress. You can spend the first ten levels fighting hand-to-hand, then run into the College at Winterhold, and say "You know what? I'm sick of wearing heavy armor and getting hit with sharp objects. I'm gonna be a wizard." And you can go do it, without being saddled by the limitations of the class system, where you pick a class at the beginning of the game and are committed to that class UNTIL YOUR CHARACTER IS DEAD AND IN THE GRAVE.

Attributes were nothing but a way to play the game system instead of playing the game, and that's exactly why people complain at their absence; because all they were doing is trying to find exploits in the game mechanics, instead of just playing the game.

Firstly, no one here is an authority on anything to do with TES unless they work for Bethesda or are sanctioned to make such comments. Anyone saying they are such a thing is merely stroking their own ego, and making themselves look contrary at the very least.

Secondly, let me underline, bold and italic this for you :

Classes, attributes and birthsigns have not been entirely removed.

The only argument you could possibly have is with attributes, and there are still 3 that remain. Classes and birthsigns are most certainly in Skyrim, to think otherwise is simply a fabrication.

Lastly, I enjoyed many of the narratives in Skyrim and did not think they were poor. They were short, some of them anyway, and thank GOD that not every quest has to be an odyssey of time in each guild.

Things change, its time to move on people. Judge Skyrim for Skyrim, and not some epic missfest of nostalgia.

I was not aware the game was solely about six scenes and what is the problem with advlt themed six scenes??I take it you make love fully clothed each to their own i guess.I applaud CDProjekt for making an advlt themed RPG when every company is bending over backwards to make RPG's for 11 year olds.

Amen.

I agree about the idea that relatively short quests are good. I like playing more than one quest per character, retiring that character, then starting another one. I played pretty much everything in Oblivion except for the Thieves' Guild and the DB with the same character, and got tired of it.

Hell, I'm already level 45 or so, and I've finished the Companions, a bunch of side quests (Potema, etc.) and I'm about to finish the MQ. Then this guy will retire for some well-deserved rest, and a new character will be created.

Amen.

advlts don't need boobies in the game for it to be a game for advlts. Boobies are great, but saying that if it doesn't have boobs then it's for kids is a distinctly adolescent argument.

People it is called subjectivity and corruption.

As subjective as these things can be there is just no way Skyrim beats The Witcher 2, or even a host of other titles like Deus Ex, Dragon Age 2(I know), or even Zelda: Skyward Sword, for best Story. So while subjectivity COULD come into play it is clearly just critic being payed off for the most part. I have seen hardly any critics of Skyrim saying anything bad about it. Not even very many about bugs or optimization issues.

And truly there is TONS of room for improvement in this game. There is not one gripping story to be found in the entire game. There are some okay ones but none are just overwhelming or make you get very emotional. The Elder Scrolls story has always been the series weak point. It STILL very much is a weak point. Them winning that award is atrociously inappropriate and tells me how corrupt this industries critics have become. Maybe they are not getting paid off but they certainly are just jumping on the bandwagon imo.

I find it amazing that you read one thing and go off on a rant about it instead of reading all the other things. I could continue to add to that list if I wanted but it would do no good as you seem to be happy with an RPG that hands everything to you to the point that no thinking is even involved any more.

It seems that some just don't care about the series and don't care about RPG's that make you think. Congratulations, you have ruined a great series. Be proud of yourselves.

I addressed some of those other things, but I spent more time addressing the fact that your complaint was exactly what I had predicted.

I have plenty of fun with the game. If you want to complain about the quest arrow, that's fine and logical; although the quest arrow makes sense in a lot of instances, I'd be fine with having some quests that require you to figure out where you need to go. If you wanna complain about the "radar" aspect to the compass, that's also logical. But just complaining about having a compass at all seems nonsensical.

It seems that some just don't care about the series and don't care about RPG's that make you think. Congratulations, you have ruined a great series. Be proud of yourselves.

Morrowind and Oblivion didn't require any more thinking than Skyrim does. In what way does Skyrim hand things to you that Morrowind or Oblivion don't?

Stop acting like someone stole your toy, it was never your toy to begin with. Nothing was taken away from you, the series evolved, you didn't, the old games are still around.
