Anyone else prefer Fallout 3 to New Vegas

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:59 pm

lolz, "They nailed the 50's theme far better than the originals ever did."

Think about that for a second. If the opening game to the series didn't have it, it set the standard for what is "fallout".

Woah 200th post! Looks liek a new thread will be incoming!

They are that, but no, I compare them for their similarities, not the shared differences from Fallout 1 or 2.

Of course not.

FO2 started the pattern of deviation from the source... then Tactics, then FOBOS, then FO3.... (see below)

They certainly did... funny that. Ever think that WAS one of the mistakes? If Fallout was to have been 50's themed in their present... you'd think they'd of had 50's greaser gangs instead of the Khans, and the Mysterious Stranger would have been Fonzie instead of Max. Nothing in FO was 50's themed that was not pre-war.

What similarities are we referring to? Again, are they not only aesthetic? You've admitted yourself that you haven't even played BoS, and you claim to draw non-aesthetic similarities between them? With no experience with the game, why bother trying to compare them? You may as well write an essay comparing and contrasting the mindset of two separate authors based on their autopbiographies, without actually reading one of the autobiographies and claiming they are similar because their books are both hardcover and green.

Then, again, what are some differences that aren't merely skin-deep?

If I'm interpretating your statement correctly, then I assume you are unsatisfied with all the Fallout games but the very first one? At least I can draw a connection between Fallout 1 and 3 in the depressing, serious atmosphere, no?

Ever think Bethesda might have actually fleshed-out what Black Isle attempted in a way far better than Black Isle did, yet still desired? Nothing in Fallout 3 except Pre-War stuff was very 50's themed, either, but all the Post-War stuff was based on the abundant amount of Pre-War objects. Vault 101 still had that 50's theme, but it was preserved from before the war. Music had a 50's theme, but it was also mostly before the War (the exception being Agatha). The Enclave was stuck in its Pre-War state of superiority as they had for 200 years, but with a greater emphasis on exaggerated 50's patriotism. Liberty Prime was a Pre-War, anti-communist machine. The D.C. ruins are still Pre-War. Andale is an internally preserved, 50's style community with a twist. Bethesda placed the game in the East so as to be able to make the gameworld more based around some experimentation, including the exaggerated 50's theme, without clashing with the West. The East was hit hard enough that all people had to go by after the War was a large amount of 50's, Pre-War culture and technology in this urban area. Of course they would scavenge things. What was the point of having the 50's theme last in the originals until 2077 if it was very rarely referenced in the game? What fun is poking at exaggerated 1950's style American patriotism, anti-communism, and visions of the future unless actually having an impact? For the remains of a civilization stuck in the 50's, few things in the originals reminded me of 50's culture/paranoia. What's wrong with giving some actual variety to the tone of the series and exploring a concept Black Isle left unexplored? I used to think "Shooters are all the same, so why don't their fans want change like in RPGs?" Now, I still appreciate the variety among RPGs, but certain, notoriously-divided fanbases seem to want to leave things as static and as stale as most shooters.

Last post for me this thread (though I'll pick this up in another if you like).

Admitted? I said I watched the vids and by them I get the impression I stated.

Basically yeah...

Ever think Bethesda might have actually fleshed-out what Black Isle attempted in a way far better than Black Isle did, yet still desired?
Nope.

In response to the thread's question:

No.

-I prefer West, the original Fallout setting to DC.
-I prefer the callous, uncaring McNamara Brotherhood to the humanitarian crusading pussies of Lyons' Brotherhood.
-I prefer five shotguns with different actions to two shotguns.
-I prefer good revolvers that don't have scopes to one, good revolver with a scope.
-I prefer the return to original, Fallout canon and a continuation to the story in the West.
-I prefer the new companion wheel to initiating dialogue every time I want to trade inventory.
-I prefer the reduction of perk acquiring to every other level than getting one every level and becoming overpowered quickly.
-I prefer hardcoe mode, requiring the acquisition of food and water to being able to subsist completely on soda.
-I prefer the references to the original games, reminding me why I still love and enjoy the series.
-I prefer super mutants that are a challenge to take down.

No offense, but you're just being a troll, right now. You must be out of your mind if you're comparing Fallout 3 to BoS. You're trying to fit in with the elitist crowd a bit too much, don't you think (yes, it shows; you're trying to fit in, I can tell)? Prefer New Vegas if you want, but the person who compares Fallout 3 to that piece of garbage that doesn't deserve to be considered a game loses all credibility. By the way, Van Buren was never released. You have no clue how it would have turned out, regardless of how close it supposedly is to the originals. If something isn't a Fallout game and is comparable to crap simply because it isn't a carbon-copy of the originals, then I don't know what to tell you other than play the game before you even dare to compare Fallout 3 to that piece of [self-censored] and that things change, so get used to it. Bethesda is the future of Fallout and that's a sterling example irrationality and rabid devotion at its finest if you truly believe the crock of garbage in your post. The "not a Fallout game" argument is a pathetic excuse people bring up when they lack any credible argument material.

Fallout 3 was full of cliches, Van Buren's plot is basically New Vegas, and what's wrong with my comparison?

Edit: And Seti, my intention was in comparison to its successor (and predeccesors). Sorry if my opinion differs from yours.
