AVP: Aliens vs Predator

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:52 am

Played a round with each race and it was meh. Definitely not as good as AvP2's multiplayer. I will probably buy this game in some Steam sale for the single player.

You're really going to judge the other 6 multiplayer modes based on deathmatch?

The multiplayer demo definitely taught me one thing-- I won't be playing deathmatch. :P I understand why they chose to only allow that deathmatch to be playable, but I also think it hurt their chances at sales; mainly because the Marines are severely underpowered in deathmatch, which will steer people away. If an Alien or Predator manages to get close to them they're insta-killed. Teamwork is and will be a huge part of playing as a Marine so deathmatch just isn't right for 'em, but I'm excited for the other modes like the "hunting" one (one Predator and 8 marines or whatever it was). :)

EDIT: Though I do feel that the Alien combat isn't as well done as in previous games. I miss being able to pounce, now you can only do these wimpy jumps that are only useful for wall-crawling.

How stable does the demo seem to run? Overall how does it seem like it will turn out? Does it have a similar feel to the first two?

Oh you can pounce, just not in any way that can kill anything. The alien is definitely a different flavor in this game than what you may be used to but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Personally I feel this one is more true to the movies than the ones in the other games.

There was this one point where a marine was trying to fight off another alien. He might have survived the attack but he didn't see me running up behind him from the wall. I stuck my tale through the back of his head and that was all she wrote. Would have been perfect in a team deathmatch. Even so, me and the other alien chose to go our separate ways after that one instead of fight each other over the kill. It's little moments like that that make me love this game.

The feedback from the other players is pretty fun too. I keep forgetting what some of the other players might be going through. After I manage to kill a marine I'll often hear them freaking out over their mic. I think I was starting to get to some of them.

For myself I haven't had a single crash. But I've heard some people with ATI cards are having trouble. The mouse controls were laggy at first but I turned off v-sync and ambient occlusion and it's fine now. As for the feel, it's the same but different. The new controls take a bit of getting used to. If you play alien you might want to turn on auto-transition to avoid having to mash the middle mouse button every time you come to a wall.

For the predator I'm still getting used to using r and f to cloak and change vision modes. I could reassign them to something I'm used to but I'm afraid that might interfere with the new focus mode so I'm leaving them alone for now. Using q as the sprint key also feels a little awkward.

For the predator and alien there's much less emphasis on range. As I mentioned, the pounce attack is virtually gone. You can still use focus mode to pounce onto walls and ceilings which is pretty useful. I never got much of a chance to use the predator weapons. The cloak seems much more efficient as are the claws which are likely going to be your main weapons. From what I've seen from other players, the other weapons seem to work pretty well if you can get a hold of them.

The marine is what you'd expect. Point and shoot until things stop moving. The M41A pulse rifle appears to lose accuracy the longer you fire it but at the speed everything else comes at you you're better off just laying it on. But I suppose if you're in a group you could try short, controlled bursts.

I just played a game as a Predator, and id say it was pretty meh as well. I was team-killed by another Predator within 5 seconds of starting the game, which is always just great. But other than that it a pretty meh experience, nothing fun, but not much bad, about it really. Not a game I'd pick up though.

I admit that I shouldn't judge the game on one match but I hate multiplayer demos. You want to show me how good your game is, give me some singleplayer, not multiplayer where my experience is based wholly on other people and how good I am at killing them.

Not very stable on my pc. Tried playing twice and it CTD on me within the first couple of minutes.

You weren't team-killed the demo seems to be Deathmatch only (as far as I can tell) which is one giant free for all. Have to agree with you though about it being 'meh', so far nothing really spectacular about it, although I'd really like to play the single player and team deathmatch modes before passing it off.

You weren't team killed. The only mode available is Free For All in the demo.

I think it's great. I hated playing as predator and marine in the classic one but in this i love playing as them both. I hate paying as alien though. Annoys me how everytime you walk off a ledge the game interprets it as you wanting to climb down instead of just walking off the ledge.

Takes some getting used to as Predator. Took me quite a while to figure out how to do the big jumps using the focus mode and to realize that the Predator does have more weapons than his wristblades, he just doesn't start with them. You have to locate them on the map using the focus mode by holding down shift.

Oh, my bad then. I just assumed that since the guy spawned maybe 30 feet ahead of me, and was the same class as me, he was on my team. Guess I can't expect people to use teamwork if they're not forced to.

Though I did see the humans working together.

Controls for Predator are the most complex imo so i'll go over them.

R is cloak, hold Q to sprint and F to cycle through the vision modes. Left click does a quick attack with your wristblades and right click does a stronger slower attack. E is to grab enemies from behind and to interact with things, pick up weapons etc.

When you pick up an extra weapon, the number keys cycle through 'em and mouse 3 to use whichever one is selected.

Now, to find the weapons (You only start with Wristblades) you have to hold down shift to enter focus mode. When in focus mode you get markers on your screen that show the location of consoles that you can interact with and sap power from in order to recharge your energy for your cloak (You'll probably die in Multiplayer before you have to) and it also shows locations of the weapons. Just hold E when standing over one to pick it up. When in focus mode, you can do the really big jumps by pointing the marker that appears where you want to jump, just press spacebar.

H is to heal.

Thanks Aevar! :)

In AVP2, cloak was C, vision change V, Healing was H, Energy thing T.

About the Predator weapons...

Plasmacaster? Speargun?

Shows promise. Hard to tell from a few rounds of deathmatch though. I've got to say, the Predator is feeling a lot more like the Predator. It always kind of bothered me how he could jump a small mountain vertically, but as soon as there was a gap he'd have to go the long way. The Marines seem to have got the short end of the stick, but if I remember correctly they never were that great with strait Deathmatch. Perhaps they'll be more impressive in the other game modes.

EDIT: Though I do feel that the Alien combat isn't as well done as in previous games. I miss being able to pounce, now you can only do these wimpy jumps that are only useful for wall-crawling.

I always thought the pounce was the most overpowered aspect of the aliens in AvP2. Close the distance, deal damage and stun in the one attack? Still, at least it wasn't a smartgun. I noticed that's also been scaled back, with reduced tracking range, and the way it obscures your peripheral vision (or whatever passes for it on a monitor). Hard to say if it's still OP or not.

Annoys me how everytime you walk off a ledge the game interprets it as you wanting to climb down instead of just walking off the ledge.

More worrying is when you wallrun down to ground level, then it prompts you to change surfaces.

Minimal. Start with the wristblades, which are a lot better than they've ever been before (go hand-to-hand against an alien). You can pick up the spear (neither the speargun nor the combistick, literally just a throwing spear), plasmacaster, disc or prox mines. They probably have more that weren't in the demo. The Marine only had the pulse rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle and smartgun. Oh, and the pistol.

The throwing spear is a bit strange to use i think. When you throw it it goes in an arc which means unless your target is more than 10 meters away you have to aim lower than you normally would or it goes straight over their head... I learnt this the hard way with 2 marines in a corridor :D

Don't know why people seem to think the marine is the weakest. I think it's pretty well balanced even in deatmatch. As a marine, as long as you don't get snuck up on you usually can kill anything pretty damn quickly. Just gotta keep looking round behind you so you don't get insta killed.

Also, if anyone wants to play, by all means add me on steam. Steve5513 (Though I will show up as "Q Who?" probably... I change my name a lot :P )

You don't have to be in focus mode to see the weapons, all you have to do is be near them.

Exactly. If an Alien or Predator uses Sprint then Grab you're done no matter what. Deathmatch just don't show off the Marines talents-- coordinated teams.

I played 3 games last night, one as each race. I enjoyed all of them, and was particularly surprised by how good the alien was to play as. I quite frankly svcked at being a predator, but with some practice I could see it being awesome. I did the best with the marine and I liked the tense atmosphere when playing them. I felt like one of the marines from Aliens from time to time when my motion tracker was going nuts and I couldn't see anything. :P

You're really going to judge the other 6 multiplayer modes based on deathmatch?

Yeah, I don't think a deathmatch really shows off the game very well, considering it's probably the worst multiplayer mode of the lot. I don't see myself ever playing it when the game comes out. Team deathmatch would have been much nicer.

The multiplayer demo definitely taught me one thing-- I won't be playing deathmatch. :P I understand why they chose to only allow that deathmatch to be playable, but I also think it hurt their chances at sales; mainly because the Marines are severely underpowered in deathmatch, which will steer people away.

I thought the marine stood up well against the others. I had my best game as the marine. As long as you keep an eye on your motion tracker and keep your distance, the marine is pretty beefy.

How stable does the demo seem to run? Overall how does it seem like it will turn out? Does it have a similar feel to the first two?

It runs like a dream. I was quite worried after my PC struggled with the Bad Company 2 beta, but AvP runs extremely smoothly while looking excellent. I'm really impressed with the qualuty of the character models, some very nicely detailed textures.

I played a bit last night and did the best as an alien. Got a 6 killstreak. Being a marine isn't really that tough to play as, just always watch behind you and if you see an alien start spraying at it and back up. Works for me.
I might play a bit when I get home from school around 3 pm pacific.
Also the Marines shotgun owns.

I have sent you a freind invite. I should show up as Q Who?

Avis: I meant that when you go into focus mode, it shows icons on your HUD where the weapons are, even when you are quite far away.

Yeah, I like playing as the marine. It can be pretty tense, and it can be worrying when the motion sensor is going nuts and you can't see anything. I haven't got to try out the smart gun yet, picked it up earlier then promptly got carved up by a predator's disc. I tend to do fairly well as the marine, you just have to keep alert and try not to let anything get close to you.
