It's Back! #3

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:13 pm

OK so after taking a look in some other sub-forums, like http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/53-brink/, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/61-wet/ and http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/40-fallout/ I figured out that it's not the fact that the new layout doesn't scale depending on resolution per se that makes it look bad, but the fact that the background in community discussion is all just grey. The layout in those sub-forums also doesn't scale to use 100% of screen width but it still looks good because the backgrounds are colourful.

If the discussion is supposed to be general in the general discussion sub-forum (which I'm pretty sure is) it doesn't mean that the sub-forum background cannot be something specific. If it was something colourful like in those other sub-forums it would make it look MUCH better. It can be anything as long as it's semi-colourful and not dull.

I think something with Bethesda logo on it or something along those lines, it would make the most sense as well.

I'd get used to the colour scheme fairly quickly, its the stuff we can't change, like the hideous layout, the counterintuitive buttons, the non-formatting zoom, that seem more like the sort of fluss you'd see in a fan forum and not on an official one like this.

Looking good doesn't make up for being horribly user-unfriendly simply because they wont scale. For me it's that my window is too narrow so I am stuck scrolling horizontally. For others, it's that they browse fullscreen, so they end up with a silly little square of actual content in the middle.

How big is your resolution?!

"Don't fix what isn't broken?" ?! If they were following that mindset from the get-go I wouldn't be sitting here staring at really small typing in a response window, glaring at the huge borders on either side of the thread, wondering WHERE THE HELL Community Discussion actually is in the Forum Homepage Grouping (hopefully considered ES still?) and trying to rework myself.

I've just had my car battery completely die on me, requiring me to WALK the bloody thing all the way to Wal-Mart, to find myself staring at this eyesore they've done to the forums? As if college gave me any time to get on here anyways, now I'm even less inclined.

They better get some new, wider skins, or this is going to get annoying quick. I'll get used to it; that don't mean I'll like it.

As Gstaff has stated, there was a lot about to be broken.

The layout is awesome, the forum got faster and no more scrolling left and right. Just need the new themes, It's much better now.

EDIT: How to get rid of the search bar?

You don't.

Was there a forum purge?

No, just an "upgrade" of the InvisionBoard engine to 3.0.

oh well, things change, and the LEGO Company just send me a closed-beta key for LU, might try it out in the meantime.

That was the whole point of my post, Frankie. They tried to "fix what wasn't broken", and this is what we end up with... But yet still implement an archaic 200 post limit from a time when it was necessary because of server strain.

You have it backwards. The 200 post limit is a moderator imposed rule to help make their jobs easier. It's just like the no politics/religion threads rule. It NEVER had anything to do with server strain.

However culling, which is deleting threads several months old, DOES have to do with server strain. I'd like to see that eliminated.

Things may be tweaked in the upcoming days but I imagine as people get used to the changes they'll warm up to them. Having to search around for functions that used to be at your fingertips will make anyone cranky but it shouldn't take long to become accustomized to the layout.

Can't really get used to getting a head ache from looking at it for 20 minutes,I've already gotten used to & fallen in love with most of the other things, though.

In all honesty i would like it alot more if it used the background from the Fallout or Elderscrolls forums, they're much easier on the eyes than the endelss sea of depressing grey.

Why not just make it light up when the user is online like it used to? Doesn't make much sense for everyone's little online/offline icon to be gray. What is it with all the gray!?

No one calls me that these days :P

But anyways sorry about snapping, but I'm still displeased. Highly. I just searched through the forums a bit, gave it some 'time to grow on me'. Each forum looks as ugly as the last, only Elder Scrolls manages to look SLIGHTLY acceptable. The skins for each individual game, with that whole transparency thing going on; complete agreement with 8-Bit Legend. It's not only distracting, its eye-straining. Does it really need to be semi transparent? And while the skins might 'look good' they only do so in a flashy ooh aah moment and then their dazzle is gone, and my eyes hurt.

I'd like the old skins back, truthfully. Now, to fiddle around and try and get posts and topics to appear in numbers similar to the past...

Forgive me for not reading the other two threads but I just can't. This tiny window crap is giving me a serious headache. I hoped the forums would be back with better servers and niceties like that. Whoever came up with this hare-brained idea needs a kick in the pants, IMO. I hate it and won't be spending much time here for anything other than PM'ing friends. The only thing I like is the addition of this:
