It's Back! #3

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:09 am

After what seems like forever, the forum is back online with a brand new layout. What does everyone think of it?

I voted that I disliked it in the second thread. It's become "meh" now.

The game forums (which is the reason for this site existing) look pretty cool, have a look at the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/56-general-discussion/

Looking good doesn't make up for being horribly user-unfriendly simply because they wont scale. For me it's that my window is too narrow so I am stuck scrolling horizontally. For others, it's that they browse fullscreen, so they end up with a silly little square of actual content in the middle.

After looking around the forums for a while, they're not too bad. The only place that I don't particularly like is CD; the gray-ness is just not my cup-o-tea. I just made a post in Morrowind General for instance, and I think it looks quite nice without the gray background.

Edit: My initial vote was 'dislike.' It's moved up to 'meh' now.

I dunno, I think in he old days pople used to take courses on how not to clutter a webpage with useless fluff, I think having a transparent background like Brink is too distracting and eye straining when we're essentially trying to read prose. More like a book and less like an Iphone.

Also, since we're doing out with the old and in with the new:

Get rid of the archaic "200 post limit". Or does that get to stay because it's "tradition" and "don't fix what isn't broken"?

"Don't fix what isn't broken?" ?! If they were following that mindset from the get-go I wouldn't be sitting here staring at really small typing in a response window, glaring at the huge borders on either side of the thread, wondering WHERE THE HELL Community Discussion actually is in the Forum Homepage Grouping (hopefully considered ES still?) and trying to rework myself.

I've just had my car battery completely die on me, requiring me to WALK the bloody thing all the way to Wal-Mart, to find myself staring at this eyesore they've done to the forums? As if college gave me any time to get on here anyways, now I'm even less inclined.

They better get some new, wider skins, or this is going to get annoying quick. I'll get used to it; that don't mean I'll like it.

This. And the Brink forum isn't "pretty". It's annoying. I don't want to look at a transparency while I'm trying to read a thread on an internet forum. It's counter-intuitive.

Also, as far as themes go, I'm sure someone with more abilities than myself could make a simple userstyle to use with Stylish to change the colors on the forum.

If you don't like it suggest a change in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1081383-forum-skins/ thread (aesthetics only)

Has anyone else noticed that all your links are F'd for all your old topics, so those of us who posted links to our threads on new threads in fanfic are SOL.

Also, in your profile you no longer have a list of your topics to view? I guess they felt we needed to see the whole first page of a topic instead of just it's tiltle and a link now, so you have to scroll through pages of crap - and most of the topics you started have been wiped out.

The layout is awesome, the forum got faster and no more scrolling left and right. Just need the new themes, It's much better now.

EDIT: How to get rid of the search bar?

It's disconcerting and it's apparently nuked all the links. Meh. I guess it's pretty enough, but I liked it just fine before, honestly...

Also, agreed that the CD gray background is poor. Good thing I don't spend much time here...

And wow, my stars doubled. That looks kind of silly over there.

:ninja:

That was the whole point of my post, Frankie. They tried to "fix what wasn't broken", and this is what we end up with... But yet still implement an archaic 200 post limit from a time when it was necessary because of server strain.

Things may be tweaked in the upcoming days but I imagine as people get used to the changes they'll warm up to them. Having to search around for functions that used to be at your fingertips will make anyone cranky but it shouldn't take long to become accustomized to the layout.

I don't like it. Just because it doesn't feel like a good ol traditional board and it feels all "Sleek" :P.

Personally, I preferred the old, brighter, tan-all-over style. Black just makes the place feel so....lonely. Not unified, if you will. Makes me feel like I'm in my room in the middle of the night by myself talking to fake people.

Even on the game forums its a bit like that, but at least I can READ, although its kind of annoying looking through a transparent page when I'm trying to look at text.
