It's Back! #3

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:36 pm

One of the worst changes in forum history, speaking as a web developer - this has been an epic fail on Bethesda's part. The loss of functionality, intuitiveness, and appearance is just about enough to have me leave the site. I really don't know if I care to return to such a shoddy forum.

I voted I hate it. Here are only a few reasons:

1) I am using 50% of my CPU scrolling up and down the page in the modding forum, not to mention how choppy/sluggish the scrolling is. e8400 at 3.8Ghz.

2) The forum utilizes only half of my horizontal resolution (1920), the old design used my whole resolution.

3) Thread pages take quite some time to load up if you choose beyond to display 20 posts per page.

Sadly, I have to still use this forum since I love the modding community for TES games and this is where most of the modders reside.

I go away on vacation for half a week and come back to this... Wow...

The new style is alright I guess, but I miss the old layout and coloration... The way that every thread is framed with HUGE gray boxes on either side and aligned to the center of my monitor is killing me... Is there any way to change that?

Side note: Seems like everyone is updating their looks lately. First it was steam and now this. (with a similar look I might add...)

The look is fine, but the alignment is going to kill my eyes.

I voted in #2 Meh, and I changed it to I dislike it in this one. I miss my green color theme. The gray seems a little depressing in my opinion. The other forums are more colorful.

The width doesn't really bother me (although it could hypothetically double the width of the forum) when it's full screen, but when I have it half (1920x1200 resolution) because I multitask, I have to scroll sideways.

Can't say I care much for how it all looks now.
What was wrong with the old forum layout, again?

I'm still likeing it more and more. I hated it at first but slowly getting used to how and where everything is my only complaint is just the gray and the loading is slow but im to lazy to change it back to 20 at the moment

Was I the only one having trouble finding CD on the main page?

I used New Content to find it, but otherwise took a bit of time myself.

Nope, not at all. It's buried in each subforum. Don't ask me why they think 7 different links (one in each subforum) is better than one single one on the main page, tho.

Another thing I don't like? There's virtually no difference between the icon for "new posts" and "no new posts".

I agree, one link is so much easier.

And I never paid attention to the new posts and no new posts icons anyways, they never worked right for me. They were useless.

I've changed it to 20 posts per page now, a little more acceptable, but I am not going to zoom things in. First off, I don't know how. Second off, if it gets me huge text like one poster (name escapes) described, that'll be an equal pain in the ass.

On the plus side, the stalkerish toolbar at the top is quite handy. I'm more frustrated at myself when dealing with it because I keep forgetting it's there.

I just noticed this as well. Usually I dont go above 3% CPU usage unless playing games, but now it's at 19% . Even while playing Oblivion my CPU maybe hits around 60% . So the forums are about 1/3 as demanding as a full screen game

EDIT: Just hit 34%. Half as demanding as a friggin' game!

Well, it looks more appealing, but I don't like the fact that there are now giant margins at the sides of my screen.

As an addition to the statements there, I've been browsing the forums for about 20 minutes, and I'm already starting to get a headache. It's a real shame, I thought this lesson was learned back in the 90's.

It's smaller, darker, more cluttered, and the layout is more hidden. I didn't even realise I was looking at the forum main page at first. The top bar is completely redundant - I could just scroll to the top of a page if I want any "help", I don't need it following me everywhere. Does it save time or something? Overall it just doesn't have the same inviting feeling that the old place had; it's so cluttered. The backgrounds for the different sections are a nice touch, but everything is so narrow and cramped, it's more of a chore to read through the threads (at least for me.) To be frank it looks pretty generic, which is a real shame... I realise forum software needs the occasional revamp, but in terms of visual appeal at least I wouldn't call it an improvement. I suppose I'll get used to it, or just stop coming here, I dunno yet.

I wanted to re-post this idea, I hope no one minds... (Pages fly by so quickly I don't want it to go unnoticed.)

OMG. WHY is the text background partially transparent? So I can be distracted by the gaudy wallpaper?! Ew ew ew ew. Where is that emoticon... aha: :eck36:

EDIT: Agree with Flashcry, I miss the "From" test, too. :(

I went and ate something, came back and still don't like it. We'll see what happens after I sleep on it.

I see a lot of people who want to leave the forum because of this. While I do think many are over-reacting, I can't really blame them. I certainly wont be leaving, but I currently have very little urge to stay.

Same here. I've this massive monitor and there's this thin strip of 'forum' smack-bang in the centre. I don't mind the colors as I had something similar before, but I'd like it if the forum used up the whole page again :)
I guess I have to customise how many posts I want to see. At the moment it's long and takes a little while to completely load.

(Aussie's will get it it) In the words of Pauline Hanson: "I don't like it."

Maybe I'll get used to it, I don't know

Agreed. Especially with the layout on my widescreen. Could you guys update it to support widescreen monitors or just switch it back? Either one would be fine.

I won't be leaving, but.... Ew...
