Is there any way to get rid of/pin the search bar at the top? I lose enough browser real estate with my bookmarks toolbar as it is, I don't need some big-ass search-bar following me around all the time, just having it at the top of the page is enough.

I think it's generally agreed that the changes that should take place as soon as possible are:

  • make the layout scale so there's not so much wasted space on the sides for high resolutions (especially widescreens),
  • make the starring system work as it did before, and
  • add Community Discussion along with the games' sub-forums on the main page.

Or have it fade when not in use, like with the default Google search page - you scroll towards the top, and then you can see the other options, like Image Search, Video Search, Google Maps, etc.

I agree with the first two, but it has been stated that the third is highly unlikely.

I'm already getting used to this, to be honest. I do like the new posting page, especially that it's white against black. For some reason, that's making me pay more attention to my typing and I'm making far fewer mistakes. Only thing I'd like is a background, even if it does demolish my performance (And yes, the other boards scroll down like a fast slide show). But hey, it's not like this is a video game. Lag isn't an issue.

If anything, it reminds me a little bit of the Deus Ex 3 boards.

Oh yeah, that definitely - that's a no-brainer. I don't want to consciously middle-click whenever I want to open a posted link.

I miss the old green skin :(

^ That was in part 2. I had a nap.

I miss Nightlife from before the previous one, it was deep purple and violet with neon green and orange highlights! It was so ugly that no one used it so as a mod I used it bacuse it made the forums load faster for me. Then I got a taste for it!

I based my youtube skin on it, see?

No sir, I don't like it. If the forums were going to be radically redesigned, the least they could have done would be to give us some new smileys, too.

edit: What did you people do with my avatar? Yasgur, I'm looking in your general direction, Sox fan...

Why do web designers insist on putting content in a tiny strip in the middle of the page? I understand it makes things somewhat easier on the design end, but in my mind good web design is about making the content gracefully fit the user's window. The odd thing is that web pages used to do this just fine. I'm also not a fan of gradients. They are great in moderation, but when overused they can be horrible.

So it's finally back. The new interface is going to take some getting used to though.

I must say, this is starting to grow on me.

I just wish that the star system would work as it did before, the margins wouldn't be as big, and the flood control would be reduced to 30 seconds. (The 60 seconds thing always bugged me :P) I even got used to the stalking toolbar.

Re: Stars

Lots of people are unhappy with the stars, I think that's understood and at this point it can be dropped without it being ignored. The stars system is probably using the IPB default right now and in time as the system admin tweak things we'll probably see something closer to the old system. At the moment I seriously doubt forum stars are a high priority for the admin. Hopefully they'll look in to it Monday or Tuesday but if we have a weekend of people discussing the star system chances are other suggestions and criticisms will get buried.

add Community Discussion along with the games' sub-forums on the main page.

I'm pretty sure Gstaff has already said that this won't be happening.

The only real problem I have with the current system is the horrible support for widescreen monitors. Otherwise It's fine now.

Not going to happen.

I normally right click links anyways, so I am fine with what it is.

OK due to developments and additions in the discussion I'll amend my list of things the forum users wish to see fixed:

  • make the layout scale so there's not so much wasted space on the sides for high resolutions (especially widescreens),
  • make links in posts open in tabs,
  • add some sort of skin system or enable users to set posts/text colours in settings.

Wait, didn't you post a link earlier for people who wanted a different color scheme that talked about the ease of changing skins in IPB, implying that it eventually would happen?

At any rate, everything on that list is good, but the colors need to change. Don't need skins, don't need the same colors as the old forum, just need something that conforms to the time-tested dark text/lighter background standard.

edit: thanks Veeno

Overall, I would say I like it. I'm not used to it, and it's lost the simplicity that it had in its previous design, but there's a lot of new features that I like, and many that I probably haven't even noticed yet. Personally, I see no problem with the current colour scheme, but everyone else is complaining about it causing sickness, so there must be something wrong with it.
I agree with two of the points Veeno summarised:

Make the layout scale so there's not so much wasted space on the sides for high resolutions (especially widescreens), and add some sort of skin system or enable users to set posts/text colours in settings.

I've got a question: what are "active posts"? Why do we have them listed instead of our total post count?

I would also add, please either remove or at least allow us to adjust the transparency.
At the moment some of the forums are illegible due to the background picture showing through.

I really don't see why you people hate it so much. Its a lot better looking, and I really have no idea how the combination of the colors black and white could hurt your eyes. The toolbar? Annoying but nothing to complain about. The only problem I have is with the ranking/star system.

So far, I'm hating this new setup only because it's laggin like hell. Those of you who are about to suggest using another browser, hold your tong (or fingers) because I don't want hear/ read it. What I would like to read is info what specific settings I can adjust to increase the performance of my browsing experience with these forums, like shutting off "smooth scrolling." It svcks that knowledgable webmasters don't bother to put up helpful error messages on their web pages anymore. Messages that help the user to fix their browser settings easier. Seems to be a thing of the past.

Anyway, my take on these forums: I'm viewing with a 1080p 42" LCD and the grey on the sides may be annoying, but I can live with that. What I can't live with is the lag. The pages take longer to load (for me at least) and scrolling down the page is choppy, less so with "smooth scrolling" disabled, but still choppy.
You have to scroll down the page a slight ways to get the "log in" link to show up from under the banner at the top of the page.
The layout isn't necessarily bad, I just have to get used to/ try it first, but again lag is making that very hard.
I'm not sure if there is a feature to see my previous posting history. If there is, I have yet to find it.
Also having to redo my avatar and signature is slightly annoying, but I guess I can redo. Lucky I bothered to save an image of my avatar.

One feature I'm not aware of if it's there is knowing when someone replies to your posts, hence why I always check my last 10(where'd that feature go?) With the old forums there was appearantly an option at the bottom of the reply window to track the post and if it gets replied to. Having to do that with each individual post I make is annoying and tedious, plus I don't feel like having the inbox of my e-mail cluttered with those notices.

:embarrass: Hmph, I never knew that. Here I've been 'right-click / open link in new tab' and that was there all along. I usually only use my scroll wheel for scrolling.

I agree with Veeno's last post. The summary of suggested changes. Works for me :)
