Big disappointment

When it comes to guild quests some players are mistaking quantity for quality. Yes, the guild storylines are over quickly, but all the quests involved are interesting. Unlike in Oblivion, where most of the quests were terribly boring.

Perhaps its not the game but that the novelty has worn off for you.

My first elder scrolls game was Oblivion and I enjoyed it a lot more than I am enjoying Skyrim. But I still think Skryim is the better game by far. Its just that I played Oblivion to death and now its hard to recapture the magic of my first time with the elder scrolls series.

It seems more like an Action Adventure coming from New Vegas. (Still better than most games this year.)

Wow....Wow....Hahahahaahhaaaa WOW....Talk about being in the minority OP. I can tell you I am NO really devoted fan! I easily criticize games and am ritually called a troll and a hater all day....by my friends - LOL - When I saw your post I thought - I know what this is...and LOL...ur funny

Some of the worst voice actors???? Really....really???? Max Von Sydow and Christopher Plummer are some of the greatest actors of the 21st century and their voices are amazing! I usually respect people's opinion, as misguided as they sometimes are...but you...LOL - I'm gonna say - ur uninformed and have no artistic leanings in life and are not a real gamer...

I love the game - level 57 currently...I won't say the game is a 10 out of 10 but its definitely a solid 9 all around and ur just embarrassing urself here on the forums - the reason why your thread is so popular is because people think ur dumb...I do.

Also, Skyrim graphically comes closer in its world building to the ideal imagined fantasy realm so that its shortcomings (inherent in virtual worlds) consequently appear more apparent (we're still quite far away from a truly intelligent living world). Thus, b/c it seems more real it paradoxically also appears more fake/illusory.

This is a very good point, I had never thought of it like this.
Its like the slight 'offness' that modern CGI movies bring with them, they can really ruin my enjoyment.
On the other hand Ill happily suspend disbelief watching an old-fashioned animated movie where every shot is drawn by hand.
Interesting.

Exactly the same here. But I think over time we will be thinking back on Skyrim the same way, at least I hope so.
I've played so many hours of Oblivion I've lost count and all those great moments I had with that game just seems impossible to top.
But I'm sure after a year with the CK out and lots of new and awesome mods my mind will be changed.

If original TES was born from console genre and ported to PC I believe people wouldnt rant this much.

Yeah I agree.

Obviously its a transitional period but PC gamers are becoming a minority and who can blame the developers for not cashing in on such a huge market. The shame is that mods are the main reason I play TES and yet next gen I doubt I will stick with PC over console.

As such I agree the frustration is compounded for PC users as they can already see the potential mods will bring to the game.

In saying this thread just reinforces my opinion that, more often than not, it's not the game at fault as opposed to some players unrealistic expectations for perfection.

When I first played Morrowind all those years ago, I was hooked. When I played Oblivion I didn't like it at first, it took some getting used to but NOW I like it better than Morrowind. Skyrim still hasn't grown on me. See, everytime I started a new Morrowind or Oblivion game I had a new character setup in mind, a goal from the beginning of how I wanted to shape my character. With this game, I don't feel like I can do that. I really don't like the perks, I liked the attributes. If we must have the perks though, I would like a mod that makes them easier to navigate. I don't care for the Crystarium look.

Maybe this game will grow on me though.

Each to his own. I personally think Skyrim knocks both Morrowind and Oblivion out of the park.

The phrase "knocked out of the park" means to have hit a home run, or, in other words, that something was very well done. If Skyrim knocks Morrowind and Oblivion out of the park, then essentially you agree with the OP.

These arguments would be a lot less interesting if people kept what they like separate from what they think is good.

This, gentlemen, is what happens when you get killed by a skeever. Suddenly you are enlightened with the flaws of Skyrim and feel the need to post a thread and disguise it as a rant about how awful the game is, when in reality a skeever did a finisher on your character and you broke the keyboard.

I'm seriously in awe as to how anyone could consider vanilla Oblivion -or maybe even with mods- to hold a candle to Skyrim.

Skyrim: Actually has designed and unique landscapes, unique dungeons (though granted many are similar), good voice acting, great atmosphere.

Oblivion: Copy pasted dungeons full of mountain lions and trolls that sound like birds, goofy ass voice acting and weird ugly character models, super-simplified everything, dumb stats system, leveled loot world where eventually hobos wear daedric armor.

I keep hearing people say Skyrim is "simplified"...Oblivion is not a complex or difficult game, at least in Skyrim you can creaet difffculty for yourself by limiting your choices..Oblivion was so gimmicky that the only two real settings were godmode or "it takes half hour to drop this things hitpoints".

Skyrim is streamlined, and in a good way, not simplified.

I love harder games, Gothic 2 is one of my favorites RPG's ever, and I think Skyrim is the best TES yet, with Morrowind a close second..mainly due to story and art. IF you limit yourself to non enchanted weapons, and don't try to min/max, if you play on master it's a pretty enjoyable challenge. It has it's issues but it's 100x more balanced and fun than Oblivion was with the slider all the way up.

Modded Oblivion is the better game. Let's hope modded Skyrim can match it.

It's easy to be disappointed with Skyrim when you believed the following statment ...

"[Skyrim] is the biggest, craziest game we have ever done."
- Todd Howard

... and then looked at the numbers ...

Attributes
MW: 10
OB: 10

SK: 3

Skills
MW: 27
OB: 21
SK: 18

MW: 25
OB: 33
SK: 7

SK: 366

Joinable Factions

OB: 4 + Arena
SK: 6 + Bard College

Base Armor Materials
MW: 27
OB: 12
SK: 22

Weapon Types
MW: 13
OB: 9
SK: 9

Artifacts
MW: 62
OB: 41
SK: 35

Equipment Slots
MW: 14
OB: 8
SK: 6

Spell Effects
MW: 136
OB: 111
SK: 34

Named NPCs
MW: 2522

SK: 1165

Trainer
MW: 83
OB: 114
SK: 49

Number of things doesn't equate to something being good or engaging, nor does needless complexity or obtuse leveling systems.

There are likely far more NPCs in Skyrim, and there are definitely far more unique locations, in Oblivion the world was basically a big, copy pasted bowl you could run across. How is that better?

Im not dissaponted about the bugs, im just dissapointed that the games isnt innovative.

Quests are still linar, and even the game content itself is more linear than Obivion.

While the game is better than Oblivion, I was still expecting more out of this.

TES was heading this way since they embraced consoles, in saying anyone who didn't see it coming is [censored].

It's an obvious hybrid that is based on trying to please the casual console player while also trying to keep the dice rollers happy.

It's a beautiful piece of programming and the fact is that for every person here moaning semantics there is at least a thousand more happily playing the game who don't even know these forums exist.

Fact.
Yes because console player = casual gamer. On the topic, I like it. I love how all the TES games were diffrent then the one before them.

There's few hundred spells in Skyrim, where did that 34 crap came from?

Also, who cares about Daggerfall? It was a bunch of absolutely generic dungeons, cities, and NPCs.

I don’t criticise games easily but this is the worst of the series. What was Bethesda playing at? It’s like Oblivion with all the fun taken out, crap voice actors and boring quests. The guilds are just garbage and are over way too quickly. It’s not much fun either. No immersion whatsoever. No substance. Dragons appear so often they lose their shine within the first five hours and are too easy to take down.

I want my money back but will give it another few hours or play in the hope a miracle happens and it gets better after 30 hours.

Meh, I'd turn it in within the first week if possible but Game Stop wouldn't allow it.

We both know it's worse can't really do much about it besides not getting the next of it's series.

Spell effects are different from spells. While there are ~80 spells in Skyrim (still not close to hundreds), they often recycle the same effect, e.g. Oakflesh, Stoneflesh, Ironflesh, Ebonyflesh. If we were to count these as single effects, we would have to do the same for MW and OB as well - which would then have an infinite amount of spell effects.

We all know that's a lie. You say that now, but when the new TES comes out you'll buy it and say this again
