Is Console gaming THIS left out?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:14 pm

I'm a proud 360 owner, and I love Skyrim, but I'm feeling the need to sell this Xbox and buy myself a decent PC, if possible.

There's almost endless possibilities to what modders can do with Skyrim, let alone any TES game, and I feel like I'm left out in the cold right now. I go on TES Nexus from time to time just to see what somebody has come up with today, and I can't believe in a matter of months how much content is there. So I ask the question, is it worth it? Am I really getting the full experience I can get with Skyrim, and maybe even future TES games on a console?

The second I can afford a gaming PC, I'm definatly going after one, but that's a whole nother' topic.

I would say "yes". I wam buying Bethesda game for one reason alone: the awesome modding community that, after I get bored with the vanilla games after 100-200 hours blow life into the game for years to come. Hell, I still play Morrowind thanks to mods! They make the game just so much better. There is a mod for everything. Even for Skyrim without th CK it is just great. A friend of mine owns the X-Box version because he has no decent PC. He is almost crying when I show him what greatness I installed these days...

I am currently playing on Xbox, but after seeing how popular the PC version is I might have to get a new computer. Right now my only computer is a 5 year old macbook. I was already in the market for a PC, and I think this thread has pushed me over the edge.

Only there's one problem; I have no idea where to begin when it comes to buying a new PC. I know someone mentioned building your own computer, but that seems like a daunting task for someone like me. Plus, I was leaning towards buying a laptop.

Can anyone lend me some tips on what kind of a laptop would be great for playing games (not only Skyrim) in general? I would like to spend under $1000 bucks if possible.

Mods are fun but I find I get out of control with them and mod the game until I've lost all sight of the game's true purpose. So while I have MW and OB for PC I've always played them on Xbox. This may change with Skyrim though, there is so much that modders have done better than the actually devs.

The complexity of ES games naturally means there will be dev mistakes that will simnply never be fixed through official updates. Mods are there to fix problems that apply to specific groups of people, and you need something as diverse and open as the PC platform to do this.

Obviously there is also lovely user generated content.

I know what it's like to look upon those with a decent machine to play games on and how the consoles are good to have because the content available for them is almost 100%. i was going to get a 360 and mod it out like a mate has done to his but got angus at MS and sony for not bringing the next version out and for their crap service if your new 360 overheats because they decided it's cheaper if they downgrade the power packs.

I'm on the fence waiting for them for the next one.

For me, the greatest advantage of the PC is the console plus the ability to tweak it the way I like. I don't have to play according to a standard other people have set to.

I'll think you'll be happy with Skyrim on PC but there is no hurry. Six months to a year from now the game will have been completely revolutionized by mods. These things take time, though.

Um, u bought a console, this is ( in the nearest future) one of the downsides to console gaming that are to be expected. It is not Beth's fault as such but Microsony's terms/ conditions of use.

So what are the cons of having Skyrim for a PC?

You will ascent to become a member of the superior PC master race who look down on anything less than 4096 HD textures.

Monocles are optional, but makes great popping sounds when an aurora appears or when you enter blackreach.

There's no reason NOT to have a PC. You can plug in a 360 controller and use it just like a console if you desire. Mouse/keyboard for FPS and strategy games, gamepad for everything else. I literally haven't used my mouse/keyboard in almost a month since taking a break from skyrim. Played Arkham City, AC Brotherhood, Saints Row: The Third and a few other games using my 360 controller on PC. With cripser/prettier looking graphics to boot!

I would rather have access to console commands on the 360 for hot fixes

You think they could at least give us that..... Even though a virtual keyboard would be GOD AWFUL you could still run some basic 1-2 line commands that can fix some crap that isn't a big deal on PC but can force loading an old save on console.

Not to mention some of the fun to be had :P

If you can afford it have both. The Xbox does group gaming well, its quick and easy to find your friends, chat with them and jump into a game with them. When it comes to anything with superior graphics its better to have it on the PC.

As for modding - The game will never be the same so you get so much more out of it with using mods. Most people play it vanilla first time through and then start tailoring the game to their own specific style. The added advantage is for games like Portal and Portal 2 - on console they had X number of levels which were great fun to play, you could play them through again but you'd eventually get bored. People are still making levels for these games on PC and there are thousands to try out! Console gamers only get half of the experience for the same cost in games like that.

I have both but i'll always play a FPS on console and RPG on PC :)

Go for the PC, hell of a lot more games you can mod than just Skyrim.
Skyrim, FO3 and FONV are bombproof for modding as well, you really have to be an absolute donkey to [censored] them up. They are some of the most stable games for modding at the moment.
The performance is up to you how much you can spend on your new PC, or are willing to spend. If you want decent power avoid laptops as you don't get bang for buck with them and they can never achieve the performance of Desktop PCs.

Windows 8 is supposedly going to be Xbox 360 software compatible anyway, so you can probably junk your 360 if you like.

To me it's worth having a pc for games like Skyrim. The modding community is by far the best game modding community I have seen since Neverwinter Nights (original) and that community was awesome.

And now we will see the real meat and potatoes of the community with the release of the CK. The possibilities of replay , the customization limits and the size, scope and depth of an already great game are multiplied by infinity.

But to buy a PC just for one game...no...unless you are rich then by all means, and buy me a new one while you are at it. Thanks.

if you are able to afford a real nice gaming rig then go for it!

i own a beast gaming pc, a xbox360 and a ps3 and i only use the consoles for exclusive titles... every game out there looks way better on a pc because Xbox and ps3 are compareable to a highend rig from 2007

The Creation Kit isn't out yet and I already have 26 mods installed. They make a great game even better. I love being able to tailor the game to my own tastes. Honestly couldn't imagine playing the game without mods now.

Only trouble is if Oblivion is anything to go by, installing mods becomes addictive in itself. I reached a point where I was downloading and checking out mods more than actually playing the game

I don't think you can fully experience rpg or rts games without playing them on PC. Just the fact that lot of people believe that these genre of games are getting watered down for the console market proves it.

You are getting the full Skyrim experience and how it is meant to be.

Mods aren't Skyrim. They cheapen the universe and water it down. Tacky add ons and gimmicks.

Nothing from the mod community is meant to be in the game and does not represent the game.

It's like saying you don't feel you are getting the full movie experience from a film because you haven't read all the fan fiction.

Mods aren't canon or a part of the Elder Scrolls universe.

Now that that is out of the way, mods can add a TON to a game and give it all the polish and extra features that will make Skyrim feel like a husk of itself without it.
