Dawnguard: Block Out the Sun

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 6:22 am

I highly doubt that Bethesda will allow you to block out the sun permanently. It's too, well, permanent. Here's my theory.

Spoiler
I believe in a Dawnguard interview, it was said that there is a ritual involving the tasks of retrieving elder scrolls and killing Serana, the daughter of Harkon, in order to block out the sun. My guess is that if you go through with said tasks, you will be given a shout, or an elder scroll that allows you to shout or read (respectively) away the sun for a certain amount of time, but not permanently.

Anything to add?

If that's the endgame reward, then no. I'd be severely disappointed.

I just read on another forum that it's only blocked out for 10-12 hours. I wonder if he was a beta tester.

If PC users will be so lucky, Todd made a pretty scary comment when asked about the PC and PS3 version "I don't know" is what he said when an interviewer ask him when they come out.

I doubt that vampires just become immune to the sun, since in the trailer they showed the sun being blocked out. It would bother me if they became immune, actually. It defeats the point of being a creature of the night. A vampire that isn't harmed by the sun isn't really a vampire to me.

I'm not saying this to be snarky, but I sincerely hope that you are wrong. I'd love to cause perma-night. If I want daylight, I have other characters.

What if say every week you had to fast travel up to a place and reactivate the ritual?

I think something irreversible wouldnt be so cool.

If he was a beta tester he broke his NDA (and thus the reason I can't say anything further on the topic)

Perhaps it's kind of like a shout, where you can block out the sun when you want after you complete the quest?

My thoughts is that something would be placed over the sun, like an eclipse during daytime. Making it only slightly darker, but you'd still see it in the sky with something else (one of the two moons?) covering it.

Perhaps it goes in the power section. Maybe a greater power or a lesser power?

Yeah that'd be good too. But I'm not averse to major choice and consequence, nor am I overly fussed if it is just a 12 hour thing like what was suggested earlier in the thread.

If someone asked me what it should be, I'd be a [female dog] and go with permanency... :P

I wouldn't be mad about the sun being permanently blocked out, but I'm assuming bethesda wouldn't want to make it permanent, simply because there are players who may change their mind about wanting the sun blocked out, or they wanted to cure their vampirism, which would eliminate the need for the sun to be gone.

It actually sounds more likely than it being a shout. It would be weird if it required thu'um to end the tyranny of the sun.

In all honesty, so long as there is plenty of notice that it will be permanent, then tough. If they didn't want it done permanently, they should have kept a backup save or not been so dumb. 0.o

EDIT: Howsabout it is permanent, but there is a quest to reverse it if the player so wishes to RP a change of heart and morals?

It would be pretty sweet to have an Solar Eclipse power. I really think it would. We can summon storms and make the weather good, why not this? Full weather control! Woop woop :P

I really hope it is permanent! I want to be the almighty lord of darkness! It's an elder scroll, it has the ultimate power to change things permanently!
