Did the Game Jam video tick you off?

Game Jam Video: http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a364917/skyrim-game-jam-teases-dragon-mounts-kinect-shouts-video.html

All that video did was make me angry. Where was all that creativity in the actual game?

Absolutely. They had ONE WEEK and they came up with all that? And then Todd is all like, "How much of this stuff sees the light of day? To be determined. Could it be in a future DLC? We don't know. Could various parts of it be released for free? We don't know."

What? Tease us with all this cool stuff and then say it may never see the light of day?

From wikipedia:
Skyrim was conceptualized shortly after the release of Oblivion in 2006.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_V:_Skyrim#cite_note-welcome_back-27 Work on Skyrim did not begin until Fallout 3's release in 2008; developers considered the game to be a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_successor to both http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_3 and previous http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elder_Scrolls games.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_V:_Skyrim#cite_note-podcast_6-28 The game was developed by a team of roughly 100 people composed of new talent as well as of the series's veterans.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_V:_Skyrim#cite_note-welcome_back-27

They had THREE years of development and 100 people could not get all the stuff into the game that teams came up with in ONE week? *is pissed!*

I know I do not understand game development, but honestly, that just seems really, really wrong.

You have to cut it off somewhere, otherwise the game would never get released. What if they added, say, the vampire lord that was in the Game Jam video, but instead they had to cut werewolves, and those got shown in the video. They'd be in the same situation.

no, not at all. just like todd himself said in the dice video, you can do anything, but you can't do everything. you just don't have time to do EVERYTHING. makes total and perfect sense. there's gotta be a point where you have to stop adding content. simple as that dude...

Yea they did that all in one week...

After the game was already released, and the developers didn't have to split their time with all of the other countless features and details.

No, it didn't tick me off. But then again, I'm realistic.

I think laying the foundation for skyrim was probably pretty difficult. I think we will see some really amazing DLC in due time though

Remember that everything they add has to be playtested, preferably with many, many characters by many, many playtesters so they can see if the feature in question is (1) not broken anywhere and (2) not overpowered, especially in combination with other things.

Remember, smithing alone definitely isn't overpowered, yet for some people if you use smithing AND enchanting AND alchemy it's too overpowered even on Master.

I didn't get angry.... But it did remind me that I disagreed with some of Skyrim's design priorities.

Naturally, Bethesda had to manage their time and limited resources and decide what to develop. There were always going to be omissions (and yes, I hate some of the stuff they threw out: like weapon degradation, and spellcrafting).

Oh by the way - yes that stuff only took one week.... But keep in mind it only took one week because the entire system (engine, physics, textures, scripting, etc) had already been completed. The vanilla game took three years because Gamebryo had to be heavily optimised and that took time.

The only part that ticked me off:

Bethesda: Look at all of this awesome stuff people have been clamouring for! Spears! New skills! Flails! Mounted Combat! Seasons!
Me: WOW! I really like the look of all this stuff! Please do release!
Bethesda: Hmm, maybe some of it...

Imagine all the bugs these things caused by being put in, Bethesda wanted to stick to the 11?11?11 release and it's pretty amazing they were able to stay on that schedule without delay. I figure with all this uproar over it it's sure to see the light of day..especially werebears, apparently.

Yep. I figure it's probably better for them to release on time, then get the bugs ironed out and add in some features that weren't ready in time for initial release. After all, if they wait until (1) there are no glitches and (2) everything is done, it could have been another year before release...which would not have done Bethesda's stock any good.

a lot of that stuff probably woudln't work too well on consoles - especially Dragon mounts - the view distance would probably crash my machine, it would probably make a 360 go 8bit. But I still want it.

why do you say that? the view distance on the 360 is already huge, i don't really understand why flying would change that, you wouldn't have to increase the view distance, you can already see halfway across the map lol..

Well, this thing is, now that we've seen this video, we can make all these mods thanks to the CK. So even if Beth doesn't "officially" release them, that doesn't mean that we can't make them! That video did nothing but give us ideas as a modding community.

Good point. Well, for the things that can be done by mods, anyway. Some stuff requires working with the code.

Freaking awesome song for the video...

I doubt things like spears and flails could be implemented like in the video (particularly the unique animations for spears)

And one other thing... that guy who had voice activated shouts?

Yeah... not nearly as loud as I'd be yelling them.

Some of that was pretty cool; vampire lord? yeah, cool, but isn't that supposed to take a few hundred years? Spear combat looked good..more follower options...cool. Seasons...heh..yeah..I'd really enjoy that along with the footprints..and the giant mudcrab..:)

That's the one thing I would never use. I can nerd with the best of them, but that's too much for me. Gotta draw the line somewhere or you'll end up becoming fluent in Klingon and wearing your Jedi robes to the grocery store or something.

They "made" all these things in a week, but to implement them without breaking the game would take months.

Also, if they delayed the game a few months to put this stuff in, then did another week long "game jam" you would be just as pissed that THAT stuff didn't make it in.

No point in that one week as none of that creativity made it into the game and some of that stuff should just be a giving.

That was the one part of the video I thought was stupid. That part I don't see Bethesda implementing. That is a really cool idea...on paper but that is way too much micro-management for just shouting. There are 20 shouts, each consisting of 3 parts. That's 60 individual "gibberish" words that you have to memorize and use in the correct order. I see that being very counter productive in the heat of battle, taking focus off your combat and thinking of the right words to say, not to mention screwing any of them up. Then depending on how loud you're playing, the sound of the game could get mixed in with the words you're saying and make it even more difficult for them to be executed.

That kind of reminds me of having a "clap on clapper" and watching a talk show really loud and every time the audience applauds, the lights in your house would go on and off, on and off, on and off,
