Football Thread - World Cup Special III

North-Korea is holding up pretty well.

Our commentator won't stop making political statements, though. I mean, I agree with what he's saying, but it's not his place as a footballcommentator.

While I could write pages about North Korea, we aren't allowed to discuss politics here, and it doesn't really matter what I think of them politically. They play interesting football (currently more interesting than Brazil, definately) and I find it fun to watch them play.

It's been a bad WC day. :sadvaultboy:

The only people as passionate as romanians about football are the people from the UK.

We did not even qualify.

I'm so impressed by North Korea I have simply stopped to care about politics for a while and support them wholeheartedly. Jong Tae-Se is playing really well. Liverpool can buy him as well, he's probably not all too expensive, as a back-up for Torres.

EDIT: Romascu - funny how every other country claims the same thing about themselves. ;) I'd say we're really passionate here as well - and we didn't qualify either.

For [censored]'s sake why does everyone keep talking about politics, as if supporting Korea's national football team would be considered a crime if you didn't explain that it has nothing to do with politics?!

I was cheering for them since the beginning of the match. I didn't even think about politics until I came here. This is football, not election for world's most awesome country. Their defence in the first half was spectacular, methodical and so well played. Alas, you can't win a game with just defence. They've had some great chances too, but Brazil is Brazil.

Sorry, it turns out North Korea's team is at least a bit better than that. You can't say that they didn't play well in this match. They only played worse than Brazil which, frankly, doesn't say much about their play.

Wow. Damn. These last dozen of minutes looked like North Korea could actually pull out a tie. Good match, I say.

I saw some soccer after the second goal, followed by a well deserved portion of pride.

That was a great finish.

Our swedish studio is now claiming that Maicon did his 1-0 goal by doing a 90 degree turn at 30 km/h and shooting.

Dude, it was a nice goal. No need to claim the guy's Usain Bolt too >.<

Nice game by both teams, didn't expect much from Korea, but I'll definately follow their matches now.

I'm not trying to say that I thought they were the best team on the cup, but everyone was talking crap about them. Our commentator even claimed that some people wrote a program which, based on a huge amount of data, calculated the probability for each team on the cup to win the first place, and that the result was that Brazil was on the top and North Korea on the bottom, with exactly 0.0% chance. Suuure... I mean, I don't think they have much chance, but this match shows that they aren't exactly trash.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea had a great game. They sure put up a fight.

Off a step the guy swung one of his overly long legs toward the ball, striking it at what appears to be the front, top, right hand portion of his foot creating some spin that I am still trying to figure out while retaining most of his forward KE. :nerd:
Yay multidimensional Torque!!!
:sadvaultboy:

He also caught the Keeper pretty off guard with the front post. Never again, if I were that keeper.

I think one of the north korean supporters in the stands said it best whilst holding his sign that read "Forget about politics for 90 minutes"

I myself, started rooting for korea about 20 minutes in, and i think i will for the rest of the world cup.

Such a shame though, I really think they deserved the second goal, even though they played against Brazil.

Or maybe they didn't, because they haven't played as fiercely the entire match as they have the last dozen minutes.

2 - 1 against Brazil aint to bad result though. It's going to be interesting to see how they fare against Portugal next.

On another note, I really hope all these tie matches will lead to something more interesting to watch than what we've been served so far. Who knows, the teams may have realized by now they can't just stand back and hope for some magical goal to lift itself in while they play boringball. Pressure is on to get some points.

...

Or they'll just play ties matches next round too and then panic in the third round. Bleh...

Another guy cheering for DPRK here.

I almost thought they might've pulled off a 0-0 draw at half time, though they were clearly flaking in the second half, and it was a bloody shame that Jong Tae-Se didn't get to score a second goal, but if they play like that all the time I'd hate to see them play against England.

I made some pretty stupid choices with my fantasy football team, picking both Maicon and Dani Alves, like Brazil are going to play with 2 right backs. I did wonder why Alves was so cheap... Switched him out for Bastos, and transferred Luis Fabiano out for Messi. Points should pick up next round.

EDIT: Romascu - funny how every other country claims the same thing about themselves. ;) I'd say we're really passionate here as well - and we didn't qualify either.

Hey, no one's more passionate than the Scottish! And we didn't qualify either...

I think one of the north korean supporters in the stands said it best whilst holding his sign that read "Forget about politics for 90 minutes"

ITV commentators claimed that Chinese people had been paid to go to the stadium and pretend to be Korean fans. Don't really believe it myself.

North Korea played a pretty good match, they really impressed me. I never expected them to score a single goal against Brazil. Of course, Brazil wasn't playing at their "uberpwnage" level, but still, definately not a bad result!

Incidentally he plays in the J-League (Japan), I see him on the TV quite often. Not all these players have just put down their pitchforks on the collective farm.

Is it just me or is the ITV player on their website now really really bad. I don't know who thought the World Cup would be a good time to try out a new beta, but they need shot. BBC streams run perfectly, but this is stopping to buffer for 3 seconds every 2.
