I have an infuriating friend--a discussion of Dragons and Mo

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 6:54 am

Alright, so, I love Skyrim and everything about it. I mostly enjoy slaying dragons. However, a friend of mine who also loves the game and has been a TES fan since Arena absolutely refuses to kill dragons. She just won't do it. Admittedly, she's obsessed with dragons, but it's to the point to where she won't even touch the main quest because it involves the harming of the scaley beasts.

When I question her about why she won't harm one, she says it's because dragons rightfully own the land and that humans, like Tiber Septim, drove them out. Essentially, the dragons are the native Americans and the Nords are the Europeans that came to steal their land.

Seriously, it's frustrating because she's missing a major part of the game. She won't fight dragons therefore she won't obtain any shouts or complete the main quest. Does anybody agree with her? See where she's coming from? It really is mind boggling, how adamant she is in this decision. To each their own, I guess.
Well, she is wrong lorewise, but she is your friend, she plays as she like and you are anoying her.

First off, I can assure the disbelievers that Cali and I are different people. I have a Y chromosome while she has two X's. That being said, I'm not trying to call my friend out on anything or paint a target on her back. I was only interested in seeing if any others shared her opinion or could see the logic behind it (I personally can't).

Avoiding dragons on her thief is all well and good, why would a selfish brigand care for slaying dragons? Though Cali, like many, approaches the game from an RP perspective, though even on her Nord, she refuses to fight dragons. Her Nord, honorable Harbinger of the Companions, child of Skyrim, soldier of the Stormcloaks won't fight a dragon. I dunno, it seems like any true son or daughter of Skyrim would answer the honorable summons of a Greybeard to save his or her country.

I'm a fan of wolves, my grandfather rehabilitated them. I think they're the most fascinating animals on the planet.

BUT...if I see one trying to lunge at me...I WILL shoot it.

In the game I'm sort of the same way with dragons. I think they're awesome, powerful (and sort of goofy/funny at times). I've never intentionally gone dragon hunting, but if one attacks me, I will smite the living hell out of it and never look back.

so I pm'd a massive spoiler to our friend with the infuriating friend.

I agree... it's her game and she can play like she wants. I'd like to point out a couple things, though... as someone who has become a dragonborn and a dragonslayer and has nearly completed the main quest line.

I'm stunned by how little of the game you get if you don't choose to follow the main quest line. The dragonborn is the last hope of the good dragons who shared their blood with us and who aren't being brought back from the dead this time around by a dragon bent on taking our souls and our land to his own afterlife, and by "our" I mean ALL THE SOULS IN THE WORLD, not just Breton or Nord or Dark Elven... we're Luke Skywalker, the last in the line defending the world and all the free people's of the galaxy. I haven't run into any good/evil dragons, just dragons, some hell bent on tearing me limb from limb and everything else in the general vicinity... and them I kill. I've killed so many I have more souls than I can use on the few words I have left. I even have opinions on how many of them I plan to learn on the second go around because I like some of the shouts partial.

The closest comparrison to our friends' anology is not represented by dragons or dragonborn in any way... tell her that's the foresworn stuff and she's perfectly welcome to go try to get in with them. lol Markarth is way North and West on the map... a really long walk from Whiterun... I'm sure Nepos the Nose has a different chain available if you don't come in investigating what he's doing. (mini spoiler) For sure she does not want to be a Stormcloak headed in up there, that much I can tell you and feel secure in. Markarth has no love for the leader of the Stormcloaks.

the dragonborn is a Dov*... even the dragons say so. that's enough spoilers for this post. :)

*dov = dragon

Cali the Liar: But if you don't start the MQ all but two dragons will be be dead. Killing the first dragon means that their race comes back to life and since your good at stealth you can just avoid hostle dragons that are ungrateful for you letting them come back to life.

Edit: Also other than the first one you only have to kill one other,
Spoiler
since you don't really kill Alduin at the end of the MQ
yes you do. he completely fades. he's not sent into the future again.

Insulting to Native Americans? You're missing the point. Comparing history and fiction is not bad in and of itself. It's bad when it's done poorly, and I'll leave it at that.

Excellent. Glad we could have this chat.

Truth be told, what I really saw from the thread was simply a lot of "anything scaly is awesome and therefore good," which is why, in my first reply, I gave my real two cents.

As I keep mentioning, it's a matter of opinion, which is why it's much easier to simply stop justifying it for fear people think I'm not doing it right.

umm..technically Mundus goes against what our dark father intended..along with everything on , in and part of it.. the world eater should be allowed to burn the world, devour all within.. so all may return to the dark father and be as it should. So, by our very existence we offend the void, men, mer dragons and everything between.on a lighter note, i do wish the dragons themselves were a joinable faction.. it would have been interesting to see Alduin devour the world, enslave all once more.. with the player perhaps becoming a dragon priest along with chosen companions.. then laying seige or subterfuge to the holds to bring them under Alduins domain and power ..

Hail Sithis.

My thief isn't evil, murdering elves for their shiny armor and stealing from orphanages just pays well.

Exactly.

I kill Dragons for the same reasons. Dragon Scales and Bones don't go for too much, but the armor I make from them sells extremely well!

I'm pretty good at it too, I've got close to forty Dragon Souls on me currently, and I'm close to hitting the 100,000 gold mark from selling Dragon Armor alone...

My Dunmer doesn't care about the morality of it, he doesn't do it for land or Empire, or even freedom... he does it for the payday.

And if I choose to enchant the Dragon Armor... money. Lots of money.

;)

Besides her right to roleplay what ever she wants (and for what ever reason), I think the main point here is that Skyrim actually lets you take all these decisions yourself. You don't want to kill dragons and leave the main quest aside? Suit yourself. There is still tons and tons of other things to do.

Just reminded me why I love these TES games so much. :) There's nothing better out there.

He fades yes but his soul isn't absorbed like other dragon's and it is said he might return when the world comes to an end (which means we won't see him again until TES: The End, and that isn't going to happen). I'm just saying that, unlike any of the other dragons you kill, the door was left open for him to return.

Or he may go to the next world. but Nirn is save for now.
