There is no reason at all why he wouldn't use a disease to capture as many "souls" as he can. The evidence that the souls of Vampires belongs to him, and WILL go to his plane in Oblivion if they die as they are is overwhelming.

We know somewhat about Coldharbour, but with Dawnguard being released, what is to say that vampires do not take a detour to the Soul Cairn instead? It was in Battlespire and we have reason to believe vampires may go there upon death. Harkon's wife was sent there. If vampires can feast on the souls of the dead, then they have it made in that realm.Also, Dawnguard mentions the Daughters of Coldharbour, we may just find out how vampires and the Realm of Bal relate to one another.
