How are the Legion a threat to the NCR again?

Post » Tue May 31, 2011 1:50 am

So basically a demoralized, under-equipped, under-trained army fighting far from home that represents a tiny fraction of the NCR's military might guarding a tiny amount of land while led by an idiot (Oliver) is still managing to hold the line against everything the Legion can afford to bring to bear.

Doesn't speak too highly for the Legion's effectiveness.

Actually, The NCR sent half it's military power too New Vegas.

So, That says the NCR is really badly trained, Or the Legion just has better training.

Where does it say that? I definitely recall Hanlon mentioning most of the elite power armor units were being kept back in California.

NCR has bad training, ineffective unprotected supply lines, discombobulated intel, beuracracy failings, and have been beaten psychologically by Legion attrocities.

Legion has the exact opposite and outnumber the NCR.

Simple.

Who said the Legion was constantly on the offensive?
Spoiler
Talk to Dead Sea....they could take Forlorn Hope if they wanted to, but they find it more effective to just capture NCR troops on the regular and throw them up on crosses. They've infiltrated all the way up to Ranger Station Charlie and have not been stopped. The reason they are not on the full offensive is because they are building their forces to take the Dam. They already have the manpower they had when they first tried to take it, but they didn't expect NCR to blow up Boulder City like a bunch of pansies. Because of that, they are building up a ridiculous amount of Legion to take the Dam so that it is a guaranteed win.

Also, I said they are only 'holding the line', I didn't say how effective they've been doing such. At their rate, it is only a matter of time before the Fiends overrun McCarran and the camps along the Colorado fall. The only area where the NCR has decent fortification is the Dam, and that would have fallen also if it hadn't been for the Courier (depending on the side he chooses).

The opening cutscene.

Hanlon may have said that, But do you really trust him now?
Also, If it's true, Most of those are still part of the half.

Okay?
Searchlight, gone.
Nelson, gone.
Nipton, gone.
Ranger Station Charlie, gone.
Cottonwood cove, legionized.
I don't remember if he was behind Graham's failure but that was the only time that NCR was able to hold back legions forces.
And this time, Legion's forces are in greater quantity than Grahams unit was.

And Legion could always try to take over the northern part of Lake Mead by going there with rafts and then corner the dam from 4 sides. (North, south and west by Legion and west by Khans)

Don't really see how effective Oliver is at holding the line.

I just thought he was too protective of his dog, and obliviously cares for it unlike the legion kennel master.

All the NCR dogs are in bad shape. How is that obviously caring? All the Legion dogs are in good shape, the Legion kennel master is doing something right. How did you come to the conclusion he does not care about his dogs?

The opening cutscene mentions nothing about the size of the forces sent to the Mojave unless we assume it means they sent their entire army which we know they didn't. There is absolutely no reason to assume Hanlon is lying about the deployment of the NCR's military.

If I remember correctly, The openning cutscene said "The President rounded up half of the NCR's military forces, and sent them to the mojave".

Maybe they sent the really crappy half.

The nice parts like Elite Power Troops are doing important work back West. Protecting Brahmin farms.

Well it doesn't. The line is roughly "The NCR mobilized its army and sent it east." The only quantitative statement you could get out of that would be taking it at face value and assuming they sent the whole army which we know isn't true.

Chief Hanlon defeated Graham, back when he was in charge, he is a tactical genious, the reason he got how he is is because he know no tactics, no matter how great, can hold back the Legion

To all you NCR loverboys, I'm not trying to crap in your cereal. In the Core Region, the NCR are a force to be reckoned with. I'll admit that. But I say here with all confidence that if the Courier had not helped the NCR (if that's what you choose to do) the NCR would have lost the Dam. The NCR's weakness is that they spread themselves too thin and are a bunch of money hungry landgrabbers. The Core Region is more concerned about the brahmin barons in the Core than the Dam, because it's the barons that have all the money.

To add, the Legion already has more land than the Core. He has most of the Four States Commonwealth, with parts of Southern Utah, and Southwestern Colorado up to or around Denver. Their currency has MORE value than the NCR currency. With the protection they give traders, they have a very great means of having a superior economy over NCR.

Eh. The way I've been listening to NPCs, they make it sound more like bad politics. You know, those Brahmin barons.

The NCR is disorganized, scattered, and poorly managed.
- Majority of troops are green.
- Poor logistics
- Bureaucracy

Ceaser's Legion is foucsed, loyal, and sucessful.
- Outnumber NCR
- More veteran troops (which is actually displayed in the game Deacani , veterans, Centurions)
- Better intelligence
- armed better ( marksman carbines, ballistic fists, 12.7mm weaponry, thermic lances, chainsaws, anti-material rifles)
- Army ran and raised on ideals.

edit: and what trizzip said, basically trading is far more profitable in legion territory.

Well, how were mostly disorganized barbarian tribes a threat to the more organized and technologically superior Roman Empire? How are insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan a threat to U.S. troops? Technology isn't a win button. It's an advantage, sure, but a lot of factors can lead to the defeat of a force that looks superior on paper.

Dunno. I didn't. The fact is the Legion is clearly massing everything it can to take the Mojave from an NCR force that is constantly presented in game and in this thread as being demoralized, undertrained, under-equipped, with little support from home, infiltrated by spies and led by incompetents. This doesn't paint a picture of the Legion as the awesome force capable of taking on the Republic people are pretending.

Can they take Hoover Dam? Sure. To use a historical example the Zulus destroyed a British column at Isandlwhana but wrecked themselves doing so and never had any hope of defeating the British Empire. The circumstances are similar. The Legion can only hope to compete with the NCR in a distant theater where the NCR isn't committing many resources. They have no hope of winning a real war.

Also, who has a better chance at making it to the Boomers base and bargaining an alliance (if the Courier didn't exist)? Legion or NCR? Whoever has the Boomers are on their side in the Mojave, are gonna be sitting pretty.

What evidence do we have that Legion Recruits have better training than NCR soldiers?
While the NCR had many under-trained recruits because they ware outnumbered they must still have their experienced core unites.
Do small time tribals actually have that much combat experience and warfare knowledge?
As Caesar says, the tribes were simply playing at war until he came along, how much could he change them -he was a follower.

Except legion has better technology and a functioning army. The fact that a single army is likely capable of destroying the NCR in vegas just shows the incompetence of the NCR military. But like all democracies they stand no chance in total war. After a significant amount of causalities the war effort would come tumbling down.

neither.

Go to The Fort, most of the recruits are training or sharpening their blades etc.
While Troopers mostly just stand around whining instead of trying to enhance their physique.

Do small time tribals actually have that much combat experience and warfare knowledge?

What small time tribals?
