How do you feel about the games success?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:12 am

I think it's fair to say the game is a massive success. From 10m+ sales to pop culture references. Unheard off for any RPG.

I am only a tiny fraction in the TES story, I bought the last 3 games, but it kinda makes me feel proud that game is so well embraced by the masses and media. Doesn't really sink in how popular the game is until i go to Youtube. It feels like there is only one game you should be playing at the moment and that is Skyrim.

Bethseda have made it trendy to be an RPG'er.

Anyway, how do you feel that TES is now a blockbuster franchise, especially if you have been there from the start?

SAD... This picture in which poor condition the market is.
Because Skyrim is less an RPG than an action game, or like some kid sayd MW3 with swords...

Well deserved, providing you're game is not crippled by bugs.

I like it, and have gotten my $65 out of it if I never start it up again.

As far as the success, long as it brings out another TES series, I'll be happy.

To the OP: It's a cool game which deserves all the attention. Even on the forums of another large RPG developer there is huge thread about the game. I don't think anyone believes the game is perfect, but most seem to have fun. And that's what really matters.

Once I saw the trailer, just day's after they released the trailer. I knew it was going to be big.
I think it's great that it got so big, it is a great game after all.

I feel that the "games success" definately needs an apostrophe.

Yes i use a few obscure non gaming forums and Skyrim references have popped up a few times. Speaking of forums, anyone notice that the general section has 66,108 topics and 1,607,128 replies. Math isn't my strong point but i think thats an average of 25 replies per thread. lol.

I don't really care about TES becoming more popular as long as Bethesda creates games that I find enjoyable I'll contiune to buy them.

It's nice that a game I like is successful, but I really don't put much stock (positive or negative) into it. The whole "It's popular, so it svcks" thing, I just don't get. Nor do I get validation out of being part of the Next Big Thing.

I suppose i asked for that. I guess i failed to get my point across. For me, despite Oblivions relative success, TES was niche gaming, and i think a lot of TES fans like fact that they are different to the masses. I've seen the ridicule CoD etc get on here. But now TES is mainsream also. Generalising, yes, but that is the point i was trying to make. If long time fans were slighlty resentful that the series is now mainstream.

Its like...If you like a band before they become famous.

I'm glad Skyrim is such a success and Bethesda is gaining recognition to people who otherwise would not have played a RPG. I just wish my friends would quit telling me how many times they 'beat' Skyrim.

Pretty much my point too. I wish they tried to incorporate the "choice" element a bit further, and I have a few things I would mod if I were on PC, but I'm around 95% satisfied of the game I got, and somehow seeing the "yikes, it's an action game now" just makes me like it more and more, because I KNOW it's not true lol

I'm absolutely thrilled for the devs and for us...that we finally have this amazing game after this long wait. They worked very hard for a long time to make it and it shows. A flop could have meant no support for the open world genre and it's my absolute favorite so I would have been very sad. :( I didn't actually think it could happen though because they've been so great and well-received. I haven't been a TES gamer from the beginning; I started with Oblivion and was blown away by it...and I still feel that way...now about Skyrim too.

The success of the game also proves that RPGs can be become mainstream. Some developers are treating RPGs as a genre for a niche market. They either reduce the games and/or simplify them to reach a large market. Some here would argue that Beth did the same, but they didn't cut down the content and surprisingly enough they kept a feature like the silent PC. A voiced PC is what most developers think is needed. Not Beth. I respect that. Because or despite that, the game is a success. Part of that is that they listened to what a lot of fans wanted, without losing their vision. Compare that to what EA/BioWare tried to do with the rushed Dragon Age 2. They just turned that game into a mediocre action game to sell more copies. Guess what? It flopped. Whatever one may think about Skyrim, Beth put the RPG on the map again. ;)

I wasn't there at the start. I started with Oblivion soon after release. After playing that for quite a while I've played Morrowind.

But that said, I am quite glad that Skyrim is a success. It is not perfect, but the open world concept leads to some very enjoyable gameplay.

And since Skyrim is successful, it is very likely that there will eventually be a TES VI. And that is good, in my opinion. And the success means that Bethesda should have the resources to pour into TES VI or perhaps similar games like Fallout 4.

MW3 with swords? Wtf, its far cry from that. MW3 has a short 6 hour linear campaign and a crappy unbalanced multiplayer.

Skyrim has 300+ hours worth of content.

Your very stupid.

Actually, now that I think about it, it's also great for the modding community. Of course, more people knowing = more possible modders. Of course that'll give off a few bad quality mods, but there's probably a few talented modders who just didn't know the series then, and will DEFINITELY have a shot at it

If it leads other developers to try and tackle the genre and creates "Skyrim clones" which leads to better Elder Scrolls games(or at least better alternatives) I'm all for it.

If it leads Bethesda down the same path that WoW took MMORPGs in I'll hope people keep modding Oblivion and Skyrim because I won't be buying things like that. Also, if the next Elder Scrolls goes MMO I won't be buying it. Woulda bought the next Old Republic game in a heartbeat if it weren't MMO.
