New Vegas trailer discussion

Well, it's not as if the government itself used any of these vaults. They were safely hidden in private or Enclave shelters while the common folk were subject to experiments in the vaults. And I don't think one city (even as important as the capital) should have more vaults than the most populous state in the country.

But it could have. 5 is not completely overwhelming... well, it is, considering how big they would be in reality. But the game genre mechanic demanded this: the place you can explore in F3 is pretty big, so along with all the locations it was expected they would pump up some vaults. Again, the game mechanic allows the player to explore one vault quick enough so that, from this point of view at least, the number is justified.

Well, they could have just made fewer, but bigger vaults. Or simply replace them with other locations - maybe a private, non-vault-tec shelter?

Or they could have added more ruins to explore instead of vaults...

The fact that the robot has a screen with a human face on it, suggests it was designed to interact with humans, probably talking with that TV face. I would guess there are many of these robots throughout NV, that do the dirty work, like serve drinks and clean the toilets, or clean graveyards, like this one.

There already are enough ruins and everything else. No argument here. Back on topic. It could be the robot is a combination of entertainment + scavenging or something along that. TV+speakers seems to be for that or at least announcements. Scavenging seems less probable: no heavy equipment for that. Still, it brings something great to the atmosphere in the teaser: it looks like it might be stuck in a repetitive action, just picking up dirt.

You know why there were so few vaults in california?
BECAUSE THE GAME ONLY HAD THAT MUCH SPACE AVAILABLE.

There are plenty of Vaults that have never even been mentioned yet. From the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vaults:

Or because Y'know, there are only 121 (or was it 122) vaults and they need to be spread all across the USA. It had very little to do with game mechanics. Again, the vaults weren't meant to save anybody.

There already are enough ruins and everything else. No argument here.

And there are already more than enough vaults in Fallout 3. No argument here.

That's good to hear, but there still shouldn't be so many vaults in such a small location.

Not only that. Canonically, there were only 122 Vault-Tec vaults, so 5 for California would make sense.

The guy on the screen is Vegas Vic! The following is from Wikipedia.

Vegas Vic is the unofficial, yet most widely used name for the Las Vegas, Nevada neon sign that resembles a cowboy that was erected on the exterior of The Pioneer Club in Las Vegas in 1951.[1] The sign was a departure in graphic design from typeface based neon signs, to a friendly and welcoming human form of a cowboy. His human-like abilities of talking and waving his arm constituted an immediate acceptance as the unofficial welcoming sign reproduced thousands of times over the years and all over the world.

--So my thought is these robots were intended to be friendly; welcoming even. Maybe even casino workers, since the Pioneer Club was a casino originally.

Ok, the speech about the number of vaults doesn't get us anywhere and we've already wandered in the fields.
About the robot, I also incline to believe it should be friendly - it really looks designed to work in the city, with all the media fluff on it. I hope we get to find what is it doing in the cemetery and whose body is that.

That canon is based on the first game. The game that had to be really small. Do the math

Does it really matter how many Vaults the game will have? As long as it has two or three, it'll be fine, if it has more, so what? Unless each future Fallout game has 20 vaults, we are FAR from having to worry about running out.

True, but in FO2 you learn that the vaults were never meant to save anybody.

True...Maybe it's best that we drop the subject of the number of vaults.

Man, you really can't sleep at night because of the number of vaults, huh? Where exactly in F3 does it say that the vaults are there for saving people? Since it doesn't, the major decision in bringing up 5 vaults might have been, as I said, the game genre mechanic and at what pace can the player explore. And vaults are one of the major trademarks of the Fallout universe, so it was expected that a huge place that can be explored would contain a bunch of them. Ok, it was 5. Maybe in NV we will only see 1 or 2. Would that make you happy?

Ninja'd: finally.

My sincere apologies, then. And as I said, Ninja'd with the speech about the number of vaults. Let's get back on topic.

That doesn't change the fact that there should be a lot more concentration in populous areas than in loserville places in the middle of the country.

I agree with Raizel and Antibody, let's just drop this whole conversation before it gets ugly.

Y'know, with there only being 121 Vaults in the USA, and a ton of 'em being in the Capital Wasteland, and many being covered in other Fallout games, how many are left for FNV and other future Fallout titles?

There is only a little more than 30 vaults that are known, some of them only being mentioned in the Fallout Bible and haven't been used yet. So do your math and you still have like 100 vaults to implement into Fallout games.

There are also some secret vaults from what I've heard, so there will be plenty for future FO games. Don't worry about the Vaults. If there's just one, it doesn't matter because YOUR IN NEW VEGAS!!! There's got to be much more interesting things in and around New Vegas, than a couple Vaults (which I found kind of boring...)

Just saw this trailer today. I felt impelled to register on these forums too keep updated. Also, the Fallout series is the only series that I absolutely LOVE speculating on.

This trailer is incredible, at the least. Raises a lot of questions. What's the [7]? What is A7? A friend and I were speculating, and we were brought the question "What if the main character doesn't come from a vault?" New Vegas is supposed to take place after the great war between China, the USA, and other countries, that only lasted 2 hours because of the great nuclear devastation.

One idea we accumulated was that the person in the video was from a disbanded military platoon, or regiment. After the war, confusion spreads, and the military simply dissolves, leaving only scattered groups of up to 5. This would explain the lettering on the helmet and on the back. Perhaps the character came across the New California Republic, and was sent out to scavenge, or perhaps map out the area.

Maybe a diplomat from NCR, sent to establish relations with NV?

It's simply amazing, speculating.

I think the [7] is actually a 171. Like a Vault Number.
