OXM info. so far

On the whole matter about what Obsidian is and isn't really changing from Fallout 3, I'm actually pretty happy about it. From what I'm hearing, at least. I'm glad the gameplay isn't changing much. I like how it's not turn based, or 2D/an isometric view. It feels less separated from reality than when it's 2D and such. At the same time, I'm also glad that Obsidian has changed the way they do the story, dialogue, etc.-from what I'm being told anyways. I never played the older Fallouts, so I'm sort of 'taking a leap of faith,' on the subject. I guess.

Of course, there's more to gameplay than if it's 2D or 3D/turn-based or real-time, but nonetheless.

Still, it has thus far sounded as if they're taking the best from the previous games. If that's true, the next game should be great. :)

Agreed.

It might be superior to you and many others, but not to everyone, and it's no reason to call anyone crazy. I've always preferred more tactical, turn-based combat to real-time clickfests in my RPGs, and there are many people who feel the same. Insulting others as "crazy" just because they have different gaming preferences is pretty damn immature.

And before you start claiming that turn-based is obsolete, no one buys turn-based games, etc. just look at the sales of the latest Final Fantasy. And while Dragon Age is not turn-based, its pause system with the ability to switch to isometric view makes it much better to my tastes than Fallout 3.

The Final Fantasy series is popular, so of course it will sell a lot. People like it, not just because it's turn-based.

Guys, please keep the bashing of previous game likes/dislikes to a minimum here and focus on the information that was revealed ;)

Milt

Point taken.

You really should play the first 2 games. They're not probably sweet oi the eye, but the gameplay makes that up pretty well. That is, if you're not stuck to the 1stPP, and cannot take games from another perspective.

Theres nothing wrong with turn based "stragety" type rpg games. Hell best game I ever played to date was still the Civil War Generals 1 & 2 and they were turn based. I just wished they would re release them, but besides that I have grown fond of FPS style games since I got hooked on Half Life back in 1998. So Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas appeal to me greatly, love the eye candy of the high quality graphics but I also like the story. If it has a shotty story but pretty graphics I wont touch it. Same with that Ghostbusters video game, most people dont like it cause of issues or they thought it was cheesy or unrealistic. They dont stop to think its a spin off basically 3rd story written by the same writers that did the movie. Its ment to be a story based game with that 1980`s style comedy the orignals had.

Sadly most people dont go for games with a good story base they just want great graphics and all that. Probably why games like TF2 are popular and other online games.

You prefer the original gameplay? You have to be crazy man, I respect your opinion and all but seriously...FO 3 and FNV gameplay and everything is seriously superior. (Well not everything, but mostly everything.)

This would be true if you weren't wrong.

Well if you've ever heard the rule, "the majority rules" you know what I'm saying. I'm not saying he's crazy I'm just saying that the majority of people like Fallout 3's gameplay. I was expressing my disbelief in how he thinks Fallout 3's gameplay is inferior to the original's. We aren't supposed to be talking about this anymore so let's just ignore it and stick to what the topic is. :gun:

*Grumble* Getting back on topic.

There's an age slider in the character creation now.
Hope that means I've been freed from the bonds of playing an obnoxiously fresh-faced oxyclean teen.
Mean and grizzled old bastard, here I come! That is, assuming the slider actually makes me look older.

I probably won't buy Fallout 1 or Fallout 2, not because they're in a different perspective, but I'm mainly saving up for future games/doing other things. Still, I've read a little bit from that Vault wiki....I'll probably start to read more too, since I haven't really learned much about either game.

I'm not saying that either games had horrible gameplay, but Fallout 3's isn't bad either. Which is why I'm glad they're sticking to it, for the most part. Though if they can improve on the SPECIAL skills, balancing the skillpoints, etc., that would be good. Obviously. I guess, basically, I agree with Rusty_S85. It's not just about the graphics to me, but they're nice.

I suppose on topic though.

How long before there will be more, out?

Well, at least you did read about them on the wiki. The OXM previewer didn't even bother to do that.

Aging slider? Finally? I started playing FO3 after playing Oblivion extensively and during character creation, I searched frantically for the age slider, only to find it was gone.

I've been setting my character's agestate manualy in fallout 3, so I know the engine already supports it.
Wouldn't mind seeing support for scars, tattoos, piercings, and tribal paint (assuming there are even tribals in the game).

The SPECIAL, and skills are much more important in how the game plays out, graphics are lesser, but what would expect from a 10 year old game? I really urge you to try them out, and Planescape Torment, if you want a good story that blows Boiware off the map. :)

The RPG genre was dead before Black Isle, and it died with it

Nah, it died with Troika, a year after Black Isle.

Troika was born with a fickle heart and spent its precious few years tied down by a respirator before death.

Discuss the article and what is in it. Lay off the "rpg or not", the complaints about other games and such and enough with the poking and prodding. This is a place to discuss this article, what we gleaned from it and discussion of the upcoming game. I see Milt already asked once and this is the last time we will request you to get back on topic. Future off topic discussion will be deleted and warnings will be issued.

Maybe people would react accordingly to how we set our ages? Even if it is just for aesthetic purposes, it's good news nonetheless.

OXM 2008:

Fallout 3 is, quite literally, a tale of following in your father's footsteps, but you choose how closely or how distantly you toe that line in everything from a slew of tough moral conundrums to the exact route you take. You can be the saintly savior of all you encounter, a vile murderer of all you see, or more probably, you'll find a comfortable gray area somewhere in between.

OXM 2010:

One of the things Fallout 3 was criticised for was its predetermined black-and-white moral choices - the developers decided which actions were right and which were wrong.

OXM 2010:

They're just saying that so people are more hyped up for the new game. It's a common marketing tactic to show the failings (correct or not) of the previous product.

@Desert Ranger:

Both of those are accurate. The latter just takes into account the aftermath and the many opinions of those who have anolyzed the choices. They had the benefit of hindsight.
