People make fun of me for being American...

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 6:32 am

I would just let it go. Then again, I've never had this, because every single person who has tried to insult me about my nationalty thinks I'm Irish (in all fairness to those people, I do have red hair, pale skin and they claim that my Northen English accent sounds Irish)

I used to get that about my accent too: as far as I was concerned it was a standard north-eastern accent but I'd even get Irish people asking me what part of Ireland I was from. I was utterly perplexed about that, but I guess my accent's taken another change of direction since I don't get it nowadays (though that may also be because I never go out). I'm glad it doesn't just happen to me, though.

I feel like the insults and general stereotypes Americans usually get are worse than some others. We get called fat and stupid while U.K. gets called tea-drinkers and snobs. I think I'd rather be thought of as a tea drinking snob than a stupid and fat American. However, I stopped taking these insults seriously long ago, I actually quit playing xbox live because I would get so angry over the name calling :P I even sent continuous hate mail to a kid for hours until I thought he blocked me so I made a new account and had a couple friends invite him to a party and cuss him out and then send more and more messages until we ran out of things to say. I dont even remember what the kid called me

But if what they call you isnt true then why get worked up over it? Obvioulsy I didnt think about that when I was younger but now-a-days my overall attitude for nearly everything in life is "dont take anything seriously, life is just a big joke and if you cant laugh at it then whats the point of living?". Pretty much made me super-uncompetitive and really laid back all the time, not good for trying to get stuff done but good for just about everything else. :D

That's terrible...I don't see how you let someone bother you that much.

For me the Welsh stereotype is that they hate the English! I really want to go on holiday to Wales (it looks gorgeous and I've always wanted to have one of those walking holidays) but I've heard if you go in certain pubs they deliberately speak only Welsh so that you'll leave. :( You lot are scary to me! I know it's probably all crap, but it puts me off going there all the same :P

Depends where in Wales, I live in a small town, we have nothing of interest or beautry, just loads of takeaways and empty shops.

That sounds like North Wales, purely becuase I dont know a single person aside from my Welsh techers, that speaks Welsh. NVM the chnace of a pub full of those people. Its not becuase your there and your English though, its just they only use English when they need to (I think, never visited). Welsh is the native language, almost if not everyone speaks Welsh there, they all speak Welsh in the pub as a result.

:stare:
Have you never had a full English breakfast? Or a Sunday roast?

HOW THE HELL DO I HAVE ELECTRICAL POWER IN AN IGLOO!! I would DIE if I tried something like that.

and fyi: Maple Syrup isn't all that great. And we aren't exactly peaceful. I mean, seriously. There are alot of people in Canada who can't go a day without trying to [censored] someone elses day or life up. <_<

Across the web (i.e. you're American, so you're stupid or you're American, so you're fat).

Do people in foreign countries (mostly Britain) seriously think all Americans are fat and stupid?

This has been gnawing at me for a while.

Its ok, the british are pansies with bad teeth.

Looks like I'll try to plan for a holiday in the more southern parts of Wales then. :)

I feel like I should say I got a lot of this crap as a kid, as I was born in Germany, so I've gotten used to nasty stereotypes :P I kind of like it now, seeing as I don't have an accent or anything so when anyone insults the Germans I come as a surprise. :P Shame some people haven't got that advantage due to their accent.
Also, Sunday roast is AMAZING. :D

The cool thing about America is that it's hard to have one general stereotype but generally alot of the stereotypes involve being fat: You can have the fat cat New Yorker, the fat inbreed West Virginian, the fat cowboy Texans, ect. Just ignore em, most are of em come from people who don't know what they're talking about.
EDIT: I seen someone mention something about (from what he's seen) that we not know geography. And that is true, that something not taught much in school. We look at maps in history but it's usually only a small area involving what we leaning is history but then we move on to another area, we never have to pay much attention to a world map as whole. We really need to get a geography class in public schools

The good English gentleman Tommy linked would take issue with that, I think, sir. lol

Pansies indeed! The man lost that tooth in single combat with a gorilla in London Zoo, and he only reaslied he'd done that when he woke up hugging the gorilla's mate in the pen the next morning, nursing a killer hangover but still smiling. Probably. :foodndrink:

I suggest seeing all of Wales. I dont know many places of interest here, but I think tourists usually go to the north. Not sure.
Allthough if your going walking you could find a few interesting places. Only been once, but Tor y Foel had a nice view.

Even if you don't find it funny.

I don't expect anyone to know all the U.K. counties and be able to point to them on a map...since I can't do that myself.

Fun thing is, most Irish are actually brunette and blue-eyed. The pale skin though is one thing that is right, we have an extremely high number, more than half of the populace, with freckled Type 1 skin. I myself are as stereotypical in appearance as I can be, but that's actually due to my mother giving me the red blonde of her Swedish and the green eyes of her French heritage. And my accent always gets confused with Scottish due to Sir Connery sssh-ing every 's' like Kerry-folk do. Stereotypes. You have to love 'em.

But nice point about the expectations there. American education focuses of course on American history, and the biggest part of their geographic lessons are also about the US only. And what would one expect when this is a country which spans the entire width of the continent? I couldn't name the states and their outlines, and many Americans couldn't name European countries from their outlines. That's no reason to claim that anybody is stupid.

Actually, we all get along really well on this boards. I think its a combination of familiarity (we "spoken" to each other for a long time, traveled to each other's countries quite a bit) and good moderation. That and we just seem to be a friendly lot. If you get a ribbing from someone its in good fun, not in a mean spirited way on some other boards. I will say this, the "fat" problem is spreading (no pun intended). When I was in Britain I saw quite a few overweight people. Not as many as here, but overweight seems to be getting more common and pronounced all over the developed world.

agree'd. This is the friendliest board I think. And any issues people have with eachother are pretty few and far between.

It's a general problem of modern society. If the health risks would be made more obvious to the public, people would eat much healthier and mostly eat less. But people eating less is bad for business, and since most big food companies are public, they are not interested in stuff that actually hinders growth of profits.

I get alot of stereotypes, being Tasmanian. But most are true :(

OP, everyone has racial stereotypes. I've been honestly asked if we Australians actually ride Kangaroos to school. We dont, we shoot them (or hit them with cars) and serve them cooked well-done with seasoning. If people think all Americans are fat and stupid then let them be deluded. As long as you know who you are why care what others think?

Who cares? Let people be ignorant.

^

Right now about 10% of the world wants me dead and let me break it down for you.

6% want me dead because i'm an american, 1% want me dead cause I have money, and the other 3% want me dead because of my views and I don't agree with theirs.

Any where you go there will be stereotypes and people will always take those stereotypes believing everyone from that country, place, area, region, etc.... conforms to them.

1. Middle Eastern People - Many think of them as heathens that only care about war and suicide bombing.
2. British People - Mouth full of misshapen teeth, fog breathers and only drink tea.
3. Australian People - Instantly think of the Crocodile Hunter, Beer Drinkers and Savages
4. Chinese People - Take your pic between child enslavers, dictators, ruthless torturers, etc...
5. American People - Either 1 of 2 types A. Redneck Yolkals that don't know their butt from a hole in the ground, or B. Bernie Madoff stereotypes that will rob you and then steal everything else after they got your money then put you in prison for being poor.

The list goes on, but those are probably some of the more common place ones. Personally I don't care what people think of me or atleast not any more. Anyone who judges me before the know me in person is an ignorant savage that can rot in the bowels of the earth for all I care.

I'm American and I'm quite on the slim side. Hell I think I need to get some weight.

I think I'm better informed on the state of the world and basic knowledge. So I don't think I'm too ignorant but I'm no expert in any field except maybe arguing on videogame mechanics but i'm stil in college and I'm learning, we always are. Of course all humans are pretty damn ignorant. :o
