People make fun of me for being American...

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:53 am

A lot of British people do make fun of the French... but it's usually in good spirit, like a friendly rivalry. :P

I love France, personally.

A lot of people here make fun of France too (except girls, they're usually obsessed with Paris).

What?!! Next I bet you'll be telling us that you don't have any schools for wizards or quidditch teams!

What?!?! Blasphemy!!!

I bet most people don't even think that youre fat and stupid, they just want to make you angry or sad. They would use any excuse to rip on you. I guess that's just a fun thing to do for some people.

Its really funny on XBL. whenever its some americans and brits, there is a war. Whenever its the french or the canadians, most of the american players just shrug them off.

Unfortunately idiots are ubiquitous across the globe, and they all tend to use stereotypes as insults.

Rather hilariously, though, you've done the perceived American thing of believing that your country is the only one the residents of which get this kind of crap.

Thankfully, I took the time to, pretty much, learn of every single damn country in the world, every providence in Canada, and every state in the US when I was in elementary school. I still remember most of what I learned in elementary school, though I sometimes require some brushing up as some countries changed their name, split, or combined. I'm also in shape.

Guess I break a bunch of molds right there.

OP are you fat and stupid?

:P

They're stereotypes. I wonder how much truth each nation's stereotype hold. For example a large % of Americans are in fact overweight, so there's a good chance that the person calling someone fat over the internet is right. But anyway, you shouldn't really let it get to you.

I get the 3 people living in Malta joke very frequently.

As did I. Traveling to Canada was fun because I knew just as much about Canada as some of the Canadians.

The thing I'm really good at is geography. I can pretty much point out every country (or US state/Canadian province, but don't even get me started on Russia) on a world map (worthless talent, but I love it).

Eh, when stereotypes are mentioned, one thing that comes up is the whole "British have bad teeth" thing, and the inevitable link saying we've got some of the best teeth on average. As for the tea thing, I personally do that stereotype no favours, I've had roughly 20 mugs today.

They're only stereotyping, it's a joke, it's fun.

You Americans need to stop taking yourselves so seriously

Seems like a very ironic place to put this :D

Fallout 3 was made in America by Americans (I suppose) by the very company that runs this board.

What better example of Americans not taking themselves so seriously

At the end of the day, both the U.S. and Britain have a history of Imperialistic tendencies and messing with those foreign to them, so ignorance and ethnocentrism for all! :P

I love France, personally.

I suppose it can be in good spirit but I've heard some terrible things when I lived in British Columbia, the surrendering jokes for instance are sometimes hurtful. The "No french, no dogs" (or something like that) posters on a few shop doors in an English town I visited a few years ago were not really fun either. I know (or like to think) most people mean no harm with these jokes, but it can hurt when you have the feeling some think there's truth behind them.

To the op: for what it's worth, I am French and all the Americans I have come across in real life have left me with a positive image of the American people. I may not agree with all the political decisions the United States makes but I make the distinction between you and your government. And despite the few bad experiences I have had in England and Canada, I have a positive image of these countries as well because I'm not going to judge entire peoples based on a few rude individuals; the vast majority of persons I've met in both countries were wonderful people.

For every Brit who says americans are fat there is an american who says we all live in castles and drink tea with the queen, try not to take it too seriously.

All countries have their stereotypes, and the internet has let certain ones flourish. Although to me "the typical American" has the stereotype of being really fat and super skinny at the same time (fast food culture and Hollywood/beauty pageants etc.), so even from that you can see how misleading these things are. It's the same with Britain I think (where I'm from) - we've got the ultra snobby upper class stereotype and the drug addled, chavvy layabout.
I just see it all as banter to be honest. I'm from the south and my Dad and all his family are up north, so I deal with that type of thing all the time - and that's from fellow Brits. :P

Every country has their stereotypes.
Americans are fat and stupid
The Irish are drunkards
Brits have bad teeth and horrible food
French are smelly and snobs
etc etc etc

No thats true, our food is bland and disgusting.

Gets pretty old fast.

Try being Welsh, I would love it if people thought we were fat and stupid. Besides atleast the fat/stupid stuff has statistics that can work for/against you.
No one [censored]s sheep, yet we get called "sheep shaggers" people are dikes like that.

America! [censored] yeah! Coming again to save the mother [censored] day!

Best thing ever!!!

Some people do however think America is gods gift to the world and that they are the best thing ever. I know your joking, but it annoys me becuase people are like that.

Unfortunately, on average Americans are fat!

63% of Americans were considered either overweight or obese in 2009.

I doubt 63% of Brits live in castles, however.
