People make fun of me for being American...

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:24 pm

Across the web (i.e. you're American, so you're stupid or you're American, so you're fat).

Do people in foreign countries (mostly Britain) seriously think all Americans are fat and stupid?

This has been gnawing at me for a while.

They're most probably as ignorant as they claim us to be, if not more. Don't let 'em get to you, bro.

No more than any other national stereotype, any of which can be quite irritating. There are the idiots who believe in that sort of thing, and then there's everybody else. Whatever it is that the former group thinks is of no consequence.

Don't. When I played Xbox Live I use to be thrilled(sarcasm) when I played with people from other countries(usually the UK, sometimes france) it got pretty old literally hearing the "Oh you're fat and stupid" line. Then there were other times where there was no incident and we played just fine.

Last time I checked I am not anything they claim most Americans to be in their insults.

The Internet is a different place from real life. People are able to write things they would never normally say to other people, and are able to let loose some of the worst parts of human nature without repercussion simply due to anonymity. The truth is usually different from what the Internet tells you, always remember that. Especially when it comes to what other people think, because the vast majority of them don't actually spend their time being vile to other people on the web.

From what I've heard most people are quite hospitable and nice when you travel.

The main thing would be when discussing something that requires at least a small bit of intelligence and intellect. If we disagree, it's something like "Whatever, go to McDonald's".

I'm British, and I don't really have a negative opinion of Americans at all.

Although in my experience (and this isn't intended to be insulting to any Americans) but a lot of Americans i've met personally tend to be a little bit ignorant when it comes to geography. Not because they're stupid or anything, but perhaps simply because they're not taught much about other parts of the world at school. They also seem slightly more inclined towards using national stereotypes than most British people I know.

That's just a general observation based on personal experience though. I'm sure there are plenty of Americans out there who can name more than 5 cities in the UK and who realise that British people don't sit around all day sipping tea or speaking in posh voices. :P

Every country has their stereotypes.
Americans are fat and stupid
The Irish are drunkards
Brits have bad teeth and horrible food
French are smelly and snobs
etc etc etc

The geography thing is true, at least in some cases.

Some charming questions I've been asked:

Is Spain inside of France?

Did the Russians invade our state of Georgia?

Are we in England?

Is America a country?

Trying the 5: London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow

As an American who has lived in Europe and Asia, I can say, yes, absolutely, on average Americans are fatter than most other people around the world.

If you are not overweight yourself, or even if you are, you have to become secure enough with yourself to not let random comments from unknown people bother you.

As for intelligence, well, you can't exactly see the IQ's of random strangers the way you can see how much fat is hanging from their abdomens, so I really don't know whether Americans are dumber or smarter. Certainly the school systems in many other countries seem to teach students more advanced math and science concepts at a younger age than US schools.

No you're pretty spot on, I live here...I find the lack of understanding of other countries culture among people pretty bad. I wish schools here did teach more then they do.

Ever since I was little I've always wanted to live in London or Rome, which is ironic since I live near a city named after Rome right now.

As for Italian, I know all of the curse words from Assassin's Creed, so I think I'm good. :P

Just shows how dumb you Americans are that you don't realise its the same no matter where you're from.

That was a joke, to be absolutely clear. As Steampunk said, most people adopt faux bravado online because they aren't worried about any repercussions, doesn't matter where you are from, who you are playing with, the inane stereotypes will always come out if tensions run even remotely high.

A lot of British people do make fun of the French... but it's usually in good spirit, like a friendly rivalry. :P

I love France, personally.
