People make fun of me for being American...

Finns are drunk on vodka 24/7, live in forests, don't own any clothes and wrestle with polar bears.

Unfortunately, on average Americans are fat!

63% of Americans were considered either overweight or obese in 2009.

I doubt 63% of Brits live in castles, however.

63%? I find that hard to believe... at least from where I live. There aren't nearly that many overweight or obese people where I live.

...

Try being Welsh, I would love it if people thought we were fat and stupid. Besides atleast the fat/stupid stuff has statistics that can work for/against you.
No one [censored]s sheep, yet we get called "sheep shaggers" people are dikes like that.

...

For me the Welsh stereotype is that they hate the English! I really want to go on holiday to Wales (it looks gorgeous and I've always wanted to have one of those walking holidays) but I've heard if you go in certain pubs they deliberately speak only Welsh so that you'll leave. :( You lot are scary to me! I know it's probably all crap, but it puts me off going there all the same :P

Why is that so disproportional? I live in New York and people here really aren't commonly fat.

This is a strange thread. lol If you are fat and stupid then I could see how it would offend, are you, fat, and stupid? lol Generally stereotypes are harmless nonsense. If an American online told me I had bad teeth and my mom looks like a Bulldog. Or I dunno, s/he thinks I'm into Morris Dancing... whatever. None of it is true. So wth? How the hell could it get to me?

S/he could think all manner of crud things about the people of this royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle, this earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, this other Eden, demi-paradise, this fortress built by Nature for herself against infection and the hand of war, this happy breed of men, this little world, this precious stone set in the silver sea, which serves it in the office of a wall - or as a moat defensive to a house - against the envy of less happier lands. This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England... and meh, what's would be the harm in it? S/he's obviously never been and knows nothing. Precious.

However if I did have rank teeth, my dear old mom did look like a bulldog, and I did enjoy the odd skip around a pole holding a gay ribbon as I pranced around in extremely gay garb while being gaily clapped by the gay populace of gaydom ... I might get a bit offended about it. lol So I dunno. Heh ha. :D Seems odd to take offense, unless the stereotype hits a personal nerve. I have to admit, when somebody says French a stream of stereotypes flow through my mind, and a river of ready insults... eh... s'part o' being English/British, taking the pee out of people, and nobody is immune, even our fellow countrymen. In fact, they're who we practise on.

I think the root of the hate towards Americans most likely stem from American politics and foreign relations.

Gets pretty old fast.

Any stereotypes get old, but people shouldn′t take them too seriously. Supposedly I am an inuit who lives in an igloo and hunts polar bears for dinner and supposedly I run around trying to get attention and I can′t read books for more than 5 seconds and supposedly I leave the toilet seat up every time and burp loudly in public. All because I′m Icelandic, have ADD and I′m male.

Nation related stereotypes - check.
Neurological disorder stereotypes - check.
Gender bound stereotypes -check.

Doesn′t mean any of them are true. And as long as I know that, none of the stereotypes matter :P

I would say there's a bit of that, but I'm aware that the kind of fringe politics I hear about aren't necessarily held by everyone, the same way that I wouldn't assume that whatever the President said was backed up completely by the public (same could be said for any country, my own included). I must admit that when I first read this thread there were other aspects that sprung to mind as a "typical American" stereotype, although they might be considered off limits on this forum, and of course they aren't indicative of American society as a whole either.

The figure is from a 2009 "Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index" study, whatever that is.

Maybe, maybe even likely... but that's a discussion that wouldn't be appropriate here.

I know a truckload of Dutch who wouldn't be able to point out Idaho on a map to save their life if you had a gun to their heads..

often they think there are 52 states, because Hawaii and Alaska were the last two..

..and wonder what ever happened to East Virginia.

edit.
